Is epic trance stupid??
I was reading the DI.FM Ishkur's guide to electronic music and I found that he hates epic trance and dutch trance. For me, these are my favorite genres. Songs like:
Paul Van Dyk - For an Angel
System F - Exhale
Deep Dish - Say Hello
Vincent De Moor - Fly Away
Ferry Corsten - Fire
Ferry Corsten - Punk
I'm quite confused with all the genres too. I'm confused with what genre certain songs songs belong in like:
PPK - Resurrection
Kreo - Burn for you
Dumonde - Memory
ATB - Marrakech
Kaycee - Escape
I'm just curious if those songs belong in the "epic trance" category.
I'm also curious if you guys like this style of trance or do you guys agree with Ishkur and say "Ferry Corsten killed trance"?
yeah i was reading that guys guide when i first got into edm, which was like around last january. i found that this guy is pretty biased in his opinions....
some of the info aint that great...but its helpful for people that need help knowing each genre.
I know PPK, Dumonde, and ATB are all considered epic trance, but I'm not sure about the others. I would say Deep Dish is almost trance-house, or "deep house" or whatever. Basically, if there's a constant base drum every 4 beats, a breakdown with no bass drum for more than 1 minute anywhere in the track, and then some synth comes building in, it's epic trance.
I got into trance in 2002, so I guess I can't understand the hatred towards epic trance. Supposedly, anybody who went to raves before the year 2000 knows all about the "love" and what the meaning of raves was supposed to be, like some sort of new wave hippies, and then people like Ferry Corsten popularized trance and killed the "vibe" of most of the raves by getting more mainstream attention. If you go to any raves nowadays, everybody calls them "parties," and about half of the people there will be crashed out along the walls on drugs. A lot of "jaded" ravers there will tell you how the scene is dead because of trance or whatever, so Ishkur must be one of those people. I've been to about 10 "parties" so far, and the music is usually so loud and poorly EQ'd that all you hear out of trance is the thump-thump of the bass drum. Then it gets quiet because of a breakdown, then back to thump-thump. Listening to trance on your home speakers is about 100x better. Maybe I've been to a bunch of lame trance parties though, I've heard Seattle has zero in the trance department compared to everywhere else.
Epic trance is my favorite kind of music, so long as it doesn't sound warmed-over or generic. Isn't that the way with any kind of music though, it sucks if it doesn't sound stereotypical? Anyways, I recommend the following artists for some good "melodic" trance, which is basically the same thing as epic trance:
Jonas Steur
Solid Globe
Re: Locate
Ronski Speed
Those guys make very few crappy tracks. Hope this answers your questions.

Ishkur only wrote that guide as a joke, knowing full well that it would kick up a fuss with those who like listening to trance.
Don't take it seriously.
si'
haha, this is a waste of time.
i'll tell u what, this thread is stupid.
oh and if u quote me, ur stupid as well.

Did you read the disclaimer? No? You should have, otherwise you'd still be tasting the salty as opposed to the bitter.
That is to say: never take Ishkur seriously. Even when he's not being tongue-in-cheek. Just ignore him. He may even compliment a producer or two, but if he does, repeat to yourself these words: It's a trap.
Yep. And the Ferry Corsten thing is a joke. He really meant that Paul Oakenfold killed Trance. If you ask me, i\\\'d say the label Platipus had a big hand in kicking Trance downhill as well, since as far as I know it was the most popular label releasing Progressive Trance in the mid-90\'s.

all trance is epic.
The stupidity never ends.
1. The samples and dates in the guide are factual. The words are Ishkur's wry comments or rants on each genre. The guide is not a joke, but neither it everything in it an objective tool.
2. Ishkur likes classic trance. He was into trance before epic existed. Therefore, the characteristics of trance he likes are the traditional, original ones. Epic trance contains very few of these, so he dislikes it.
3. Epic trance has gone to absolute shit in the past five years. What was once a refreshing new take on the genre is now thoroughly raped, and even people far more tolerant than Ishkur are sick of it.
4. Ishkur is not always right.

His guide is a bit all-over the place with all those different genres and sub-genre names and sometimes, the "factual" genre developments seem to be just fictional!
For example, there is a genre he calls "tribal trance" (???) which is nothing more then tribal a-la tenaglia progressive house with names like head hocho and tarantella. Then it gets much more confusing. This tribal trance (the tracks he featured are from the end of the 90s and oos right?)is supposed to precede (or just relates to?) and develope in what he calls "ibiza trance" (ibiza trance?) with such diverse names as chicane, solar stone and Humate that came from the whole spectrum of the 90s. Then ibiza trance leads to mid-90s "dream-trance" or "dream-house" with artists like robert miles...that makes no sense or whatsoever...!
Also we learn that there are two genres in "euro-trance", "anthem trance" and "epic trance". What's the actual distinction? In Ishkur's guide probably what i get is that "epic trance" is cheesier...but i think this "epic trance" genre he mentions doesn't exist at all...i mean he mentions names like paul van dyk together with Ian Van Dahl, Alice Deejay and Ayla!?I thought that Ian Van Dahl and co.were just a kind of euro-beat, euro-pop or what they funnily call in the UK as "scouse-house".
i don't know...despite that, this tune he features in the "classic trance" category, namely Caucassus- "Our Dream" is f*cking awwesomeeee!!!!!!I agree with him-this is true trance music, not of course that other forms of trance are not good. This just lives-up to its name!
And yea i'll do it again... here's two youtube videos of two classic trance tunes...ahh....trance...
