[Prog] David Michael - Through The Looking Glass [192kbps FULL]

Real heavy on the bassline this time. Slowed it down a bit from my typical trance tempos.

Would love some feedback on this one...

hey mate, this is really different.. i like it!
the bassline sounds like a very heavy synthesized voice.. i like the break at around 2:00 especially when the bass comes back in.. maybe try and add some effects on the main synths to give it that extra touch.

anyway good job.

Bidor.

Thanks for the tip, and glad you liked it! I'll be sure to check out the track in your sig.

Pretty good track there. All the sounds are well done, mixed well... me likey! Same sorta stuff I tend to produce. Always enjoy stuff with a nice groove to it. Not really any complaints, maybeeee a variance on the bassline in a couple spots would keep it a little more fresh, but thats just nit-picking. Keep it up

Yeah I kinda thought that too now that I look back on it... some variances on the bassline would have helped.

Thanks!!

you weren't kidding about the bass. i like this alot. I agree that a little variation would go a long way. The only prb i have w/it would be those little build ups (the first is @ around a minute), they kind of interupt the flow. good job tho
Andy

Thanks Andy! Appreciate the comments. I thought the little build ups would add some variety. Didn't mean to interrupt your groove.

Alright David - Sorry it too me so long to get to you on this, but here are my thoughts.

- The bassline is SICK - Love it, really drives the tune.

- The high melodic element is really nice, I wasn't sure I was going to like it when you dropped out the bass on the initial build, but when the kick came back in with the high melody and bassline together I was lovin' it.

- I WOULD have burned this to a disc to play out live if not for one, small thing: The high percs. There are a lot of times in this tune where it sounded like instead of using a fill, you just through a 3/4 echo or something on the high hats. I didn't like it at all, made the tune sound like it was off tempo.

- Other than that, the only thing I'd suggest is finding a little something to spice up the intro a bit - But honestly, it's a really, really great start m8!

Keep me posted on this bro - And all your productions!

Thanks Rob, I really appreciate the in-depth review.

Yeah, the "fill" was a heavy delay effect. Sorry you didn't like it, I will keep that in mind next time... lol.

The bassline seems to be a hit though!

Sure, give me a sec... I'll re-up it.

Posted by david.michael on Dec-14-2006 17:36:

Hmm... I'll get it back up this evening... appears I don't have a copy of this on my laptop and I'm not at home currently.

Alternatively, you could give it a listen on my MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/dmichaelmusic

Sorry about that... link updated.

Updated with a "permanent" link... sorry to those who were trying to download from expired YouSendIt links.

Wow that bassline is pretty damn hot!!

Theres only 2 things I'd have to fault, one like everyone else said, bit of note change to the bassline itself.
And the trebles, need to be restrained a bit, part from that, damn awesome track dude

Melody(s) at 2ish are a little tinny.. just personal opinion though...

Bassline is cool.

Rob is right, those fills need to be sorted a bit. It sounds muddy ontop of everything else. using that sort of delay works better when there isn't a kick going on at the same time.

sound of the melody at 3:40 ish sounds a little "common" you might want to play with that a little more.

sidechain is cool when the kick comes back in on the break, but i dont like how it affects that melody.

drum fill at like 4:40 ish at the end of the break are cool

maybe studdering the bass could be cool, the sounds could be beefed up a bit, it's tough to get "twinkly" to sound solid and i am only listenin to the myspace sample... also, the crash is kinda boring as well.. seems like a heavily used sample.

all in all nice work, a nice starting point.

Thanks for the honest and in-depth review. I appreciate the critique.

When you say that you don't like how the sidechaining affects the melody, what do you mean? Does it make the melody pulse too much?

I think some of these issues might have been easier for me to sort out if I had proper monitors. Imagine this: the speakers I am monitoring with are 2 old Technics floor-standing speakers (each with 2 12" woofers and busted mids/highs), and 2 Pioneer 4-way 6x9 automotive speakers in enclosures for mid/high duty. LOL, it's ghetto as hell. Sounds surprisingly nice for simple listening or partying... but obviously less than ideal for monitoring.

edit: also, were you able to get my set downloaded? Sorry you were having trouble...

Basically I mean that when you have the it sidechained during the melody, that sidechain is affecting the melody, and I don't think it sounds very good on this particular track. I suppose it does make the melody "pulse" too much, but really the fact that it pulses just sort of bothers me... more of my own opinion really. Had you changed the sound and made it pules it could maybe sound better, but as it is, with the same sound which doesn't pulse anywhere else - i don't think it fits well.

Alrighty... thanks for the clarification.

Thanks Karol.

What is it you didn't like about the clap? The delay, perhaps?

Holy Buckets! That bassline is wodnerfully wierd.

The intro percs seemed a tad strange at times before the breakdown. A little busy without fulfilling the groove -- but that's just me.

Some of the noises during the breakdown were rather loud in high freqs to me. Otherwise, it's not bad.

I'm not sure I like the trancy-bing-ding lead that appears 4/6th of the way in the track.

The second break is just, well, wierd. It's like a mutant glockenspiel.

Very dancy prog. Coolness overall, but I suppose I wasn't ready for it.

Thanks, B_man. Apparently, it's generally agreed that the bassline is a hit and the perc fills were a miss.
