Surround sound systems and CDJ's

Odd question but i've been hinted at that I will FINALLY be getting some CDJ's for christmas or my birthday (new years eve). Unfortunately getting any kind of sound system for them right now is a bit out of the question as wife and I went on an early christmas shopping binge and dried up funds (at least it's out of the way).
Anyway. I was wondering if it is in any way possible to hook up CDJs/Mixer up to a regural 5.1 style surround sound system.

Sure, that will work just fine.

Uhm. Thanks for the fast and in-depth response heheh. Was thinking more along the lines of the how-to's of it all, whether i will need anything special or jack adaptors or anything of the like.

Well no, just a stereo RCA cable assuming you don't have a high end mixer which will have XLR outs. In that case, you'll just need XLR to RCA adapters.

Shit, that simple? fucking eh! And I highly doubt it'll be a high-end mixer anyway. Cheers m8, thanks.

or if you have direct input... you can use something like this:

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/p...CONTENTID=10036

it's what i use, and it works perfectly

I'm assuming by surround sound system that he means he has a set of speakers and a receiver?

That logitech device would only work for using powered computer/multimedia speakers with a stereo input.

i have heard that its pointless to spin with a surround sound system...something to do with its a waste of sound or some crap like that...is this correct?

Posted by Ryan0751 on Dec-07-2006 16:19:

They just mean that playing non-surround encoded material (dolby pro-logic) on a surround system doesn't do anything with the rear and center speakers.

Big club systems are usually stereo, with multiple speaker stacks.

Still, for spinning at home, you can still use your home theater setup for stereo material.

some surround systems will process the signal somehow and the processing delays the sound a bit, so it could be that you can't mix using the surround system speakers as monitors, so you'd have to mix only in headphones. some systems have the ability to choose direct sound output though, so it doesn't process it and it won't be delayed. but i dunno how your system is but this might be a good thing to know if you try to mix using the surround system as monitors.

Like everyone said, it's pretty easy to do. Just connect the outs on the mixer to the input on the back of the receiver with RCA cables. Heck, you can even use a standard home audio system if it's not ancient

club systems are set up as mono, not stereo.

Sometimes, but not always...

You may plug-in your cdj to your amplifier either through the Coaxial digital output or regular RCA.

When playing you'll want to operate in either 2 or 5 speaker mode.
Avoid anything called "effects" dsp or anything of the sort as these are emulating a surround sound feed ( which you would get from a dvd-video ) with frequency cuts, delays etc for rear channels and such.

Incremental crossover between both stereo channels is commonly done to avoid excessive panning effects in dissonant rooms.

It's far from being an absolute necessity.
