WTF? No way is this festival a place for muggers or what have you. There has always been lots of security at these types of events and muggers aren't welcomed.

Never heard of anyone getting pick-pocketed either. Smart people don't usually carry their money or other valuable items in their pockets.

I put all my valuables in a condom and swallow it... Choose an orifice.

Sorry TSG i do appolagise, but in a outdoor venue with thousands of people for NYE is going to attract pick pocketers, nothing any1 can do about it... i dont believe muggers are welcome anywhere, but the still are everywhere, its life. i was asking this to people who have been to similar events in LA which is outdoor etc... have they ever seen any or heard of any1 being pick pocketed as i have never been to LA and am slightly nieve to things like this, i was after some help. you answered the question for me but you would be one person out of say 5,000 people at an event, one person telling me it doesnt happen doesn't mean it doesn't happen.
i dont know how strict security will be, nore does any1 else as this is the first giant maximus............

where would you surgest i keep my valubles and money then if not in my pocket?

in a wallet? and where do i keep that? where would you as a "smarter person" keep yours then? because to be honest, apart from pockets i am all out of ideas.

unless your talking about carrying round that bag you strap around your waist.......?

your shoe........?

i am open for ideas.

Thanks

pickpocketing at clubs/raves/festivals basically doesns't happen here. it really doesn't even happen anywhere in the US in general. not to say there are no instances of it happening but its not something you need to concern yourself with. remember we live here, you don't - so we are better judges of what reality is. i highly doubt you could find anyone here on this board that its happened to in the states.

now on the other hand, make sure you don't leave your digital camera or phone or girl's purse around - there are always some losers that will take advantage of something lying around unwatched and swipe it. one of the girls we were with last weekend had a purse and camera taken from her table/sofa at Vanguard.

i think you have cleared up any worries

Just don't put anything in back pockets just to be safe (though if you're from London, you probably already do that...lol). I've never heard of anyone getting pickpocketed here either (club, street or otherwise). A friend of mine thought he was once, but later found his wallet in a drawer, right where he had left it.

Security is usually pretty thorough at these events, so little fear of muggings or violence inside the event either, though I have heard of a few incidents like these (not very often though).

To give you an idea, two years ago at Giant Village my friend passed out by a mailbox at about 2am and I didn't find him until 4am. So for 2 hours he was alone, on the floor passed out drunk

Anyway, nothing was stolen from him...so I would imagine at a 21+ event that costs quite a bit of money to get in...no one would really be pickpocketing

i read somewhere that london is the most dangerous city in the world. they have more murders than nyc and la. and everyone over there does cocaine from like 12 year old girls to 70 year old men.

Where do you live?

i lived in West Hampstead for the summer of 1991 - one of the best times of my life. got to see Moby play 'Go' at the Astoria back when that was his first track.

New Years, Giant Village 2004-2005...
My then girlfriend and I make the way to Oakenfold's stage. Chemical Brother's Galvanize is blasting while we await Oakenfold. We're feeling great, having the time of our lives... looking forward to the new year which is mere minutes away. I'm holding my girl in front of me, and there's this couple dancing behind me. they bumped into me lightly here and there.. didn't think much of it, since the venue was packed. Probably less than 1 mintue before the new year, i feel some hand reaching into my back pocket, grabbing my wallet. I quickly hit the hand away and turn back. turns out it was that bitch dancing behind me w/ her man. I'm fronting the girl about her botched pickpocket attempt, her man's just standing there doing nothing. While this stupid bickering is taking place, fireworks are going off, people are celebrating the new year. Needless to say, this killed my roll and night. fucked up trying to steal my wallet, but even more fucked up doing so seconds before the new year
I even had a wallet chain attached to my wallet. From that situation, I realized that wallet chains call attention to the fact that you have a wallet, & even points out which particular pocket your wallet is in... so you're probably more likely to get pickpocketed if you use wallet chains. I've been to NUMEROUS PACKED, shoulder to shoulder, moshing, events/concerts and this is the only time something like this has ever happened. ever since, I don't use wallet chains anymore. If my pants have a button on the back, I'll bring my wallet into the event; if not, I don't even use a wallet and place my cash/id in my shirt pocket that has a button or front pockets. or if anything, always place your shit in front pockets, never the rear.

Posted by TSG on Dec-08-2006 19:38:

Was I being rude? Didn't mean to, that's just the way I sound sometimes.
Anyway... as Scatterbrain mentioned, don't put anything in your back pockets if you're going to be in a crowded place. Also, if you really don't need to carry your wallet around, then don't. You can always put your ID in your socks (make sure socks aren't all stretched out) or if you have pants that have zippers on pockets, that works too.

hahaha... that pretty much goes for anywhere now.

Can't imagine people paying $80+ to mug people. Maybe outside the event but even then I don't think its happens much.

You know when I travel anywhere I buy those traveler's pouch (the kind you wear as a necklace underneath a ashirt or the kind that's a fanny pack you wear on the inside of your pants.

Ah scatterbrain that sucks. What would put me in a really pissy mood on NYE.

But yeah as people have been saying pickpockets and stuff aren't normally much of a problem. I try to wear pants with a button in the back so I can button up my ID and credit card and I keep my cash in my front pocket. Which somehow always seems to disappear by the end of the night .

But if your coming into LA, like all cities there are some places to avoid. Downtown isn't realy as bad as some people tend to claim, especially around where Giant is going to be. But if you go too far east of the event you can find yourself in some shaady areas. If your looking to score some crack tho you'll find your self in the right place.
