Argos might have something for all you 56k'ers :)

Argos High Speed 56k Internet Cable

I found this while pissing around with the Argos book, and thought it could be of some use, if you dont want to spend 300 a year odd on broadband, then this 'could' be worth the tenner, IF if works, coz i no that standard telephone cables are pants for transfer coz i used to get 3kb/sec outa mine, and those extensions can make them worse, but if your comp is within 4.5 meters of the telephone point you use, then this could speed up ur downloads with no long term charge..if it works, good job someone looks after you all isn't it

NB: If you do want one, Page 713 Item #11

Sounds handy, thanks for the info. Doubt it'll work at my dad's house cos the phone lines are dodgy there neway, could work at my mum's though

my step dad has it and he gets 14k/s out of it sometimes

Ok, first of all, this could make a bit of a difference, i get about 4.8k max download speed. I think i could get about 5.5k, but the line is set by bt to a certain gain. Prob not much over 6k, if it si updated, which they r not likely to do for you, it is not covered, so if it fucks up, you r screwed. But this sounds handy, mite pop along to argos 2moro, and get it
I investigated the whole fone line thing though, they tested my line, and said it was fine. But if you get shit speeds contact them and get them to test ya line. It is free and it could speed yr line up a bit, oh and dont use 10m extension leeds, they mess it up even more, unless you get a booster

yeah i extensions are pants, 2 things:

1. dont buy this and then think u can shove it in an extension, coz that wont work, remember the saying "your pc is as fast as the slowest component" well if the data comes flying down this cord, its gona have to slow down thro the extension, so be a waste of time lol!

2. If it is crap, then with Argos u have their 16 day money back garuntee, so if its crap, take it back saying its crap and nothing lost

lol. look at page 642 in the argos cat. Check out the DJ. He looks a complete gimp. Great set of decks he's got there aswell!!!

Posted by skattrd on Mar-25-2002 00:20:

To be honest I dont think this will make any difference to connection speeds, as standard extension cable is the same quality as the cable BT use, so I wouldnt bother...
Its Argos, so if its pooh return it

Ok, i have bought it, and i reckon i am getting on avergae an extra .5k download. Is it worth buying, well not really sure. Seems to be a bit faster. But i will keep you updated

Posted by Kinuvan on Mar-27-2002 14:15:

The thing is I find that it's rarely your modem playing up when downloads go slow, it's more to do with server usage, network availability and the hardware along the line. It's true to say that if there is a busy router somewhere then that is going to slow down your download across the system. A good example of this is that downloads from America often go more quickly than from ones in London. Sutff from London zips about in the City's router sytem for ages before getting to you where as from America your signal goes pretty much straight to Holland then through a super fast satellite link to the US, where they have pretty good Internet capabilities. Especially bearing in mind that the phone system in the UK isn't particualarly good and this gold line actually be better than the BT lines anyway.

Posted by flystyler on Mar-27-2002 14:27:

Well it is faster, that is all i care about. And anyway when most servers can pump out an average download of 60k/s , a 56k user should always get fast speeds. Been getting 5.1k average download speed now

Fork out for BT Openworld, it's a cool service, it never goes down (only about 4 times in 8 months, and 10 mins @ a time then) and u get uncapped download speeds, sometimes upto 150kbp/s can be spread over audiogalaxy @ ne1 given time, and for 30 quid a month now, it's well worth the money, u think its twice as much as some 56k services but 10 times as fast

i have that line in the house... its not much difference you get like 1.0K more on your downloads. you can save your pocket a tenner and just buy something because its pretty useless.

I'm no longer in the realm of the 56k, I've joined the broadband Generation
