[REVIEW] Martin Roth & Eco -w- R.Tyas/Luzz/Deepspell @ Club Shelter (12.9.06)
First off I want to congratulate Matt & Eco for making this night possible. They did a very good job bringing someone like Martin Roth to NYC. You guys worked hard. Glad to see the hard work you guys put in wasn't done in vain.
I got there at around midnight. The turnout was pretty good! Even downstairs started to get a little crowded at one point. Tyas + Luzz did a good job.. Started out at 124BPM
Met some of the TAs: twilogoddess, DJ AK, gmoney, mattfelner, Eco, enigmaT, and of course s0t (Luzz) and DJslantzz (Ryan Tyas). Also met the third Tyas brother
Met some others, but I forgot your names...Sorry!
Roth played some classics as well. gmoney made a tracklisting with the use of his sidekick, so we'll get to see what the final Tracklist looks like.
Not too fond of their sound system. And since it was the first time Roth using a rotary, the volume wasn't as loud as it should've been. It was good to see Roth was having a good time, though.
Only thing I didn't like was the staff there was pretty obnoxious. I think if Eco & Co. have another party like this, my advice would be that they should try another venue. The staff @ Shelter was a bit mean and the DJ after Roth didn't even let him finish his song.. Slowed down the tempo and played his minimal shit. Pissed me off. Roth started from 1AM and ended a little after 3. The original time slot was 1-4AM.
I'll post the few pics that I have sometime tomorrow
i will agree with you on the bouncers. i was in the booth looking for my jacket/hoodie. i couldnt' find it. i admit i was a little bit drunk but the bouncers straight up were kicking me out. i ended up leaving without my hoodie. i guess someone jacked it. luckily i was being a lil too drunk and for some reason i thought i had lost my jacket. venue was pretty cool. didn't like the sound at all. martin roth was good though. gj eco, it was good meeting you in person for the first time. glad you guys had a good turnout. its always good supporting the local and small dj's.
gmoney, that track we've been trying to ID was:
TDR - Squelch (Sander van Doorn Remix)
Had a f#%cking blast. First time seeing Eco & Martin, so good. Loved Shelter, felt like Arc.
Big Mike & Trace, hello hello.
Eco, sorry I was somewhat plastered when talking to you. I think I took your suggestion to support the scene with drinks a bit too close to heart. Anyhoo, might have something more salient to say tomorrow.
Right now all I can say is LOVELY, lovely.
- Molly
haha ya bigmike dont forget about me
Eco did a mad nice opening set , martin roth was good but he wuznt nothing special ... plus he played way to short maybe thats why , and omg when the dj that came on after just killed the mood , people where dancing and havin a blaast as soon as the dj after roth came on everything DIED !

So here's my review.
We arrived just as the doors opened, pretty much making us the first ones on the scene. Props to DJ Eco for the amazing opening set that was being started as we got there. One of my friends complained about the smallness of the venue at first, and I must admit that there's something to be said for something like Crobar's main room. Regardless of how much my friend criticized the size of the venue, no criticism could honestly be aimed at anything apart from the small size. Shelter is, simply put, a really fun club. I thouroughly enjoyed the atmosphere, the crowd, and the music during the night.
DJ Eco opened his set with some new remix of 'Discopolis', with which I was not familiar. He then proceeded to drop a long list of fantastic tracks that made for an awesome set. His mixing was so perfect and creative, that I'd wager to say that this was the best set I've ever heard out of Eco. He was on until a little after one, when Martin Roth took over.
When Martin Roth hit the decks he immediately started with some hard trance that had clear psytrance influences in it. He then began what I personally saw as one of the best sets I've heard so far this year. It may have been short, but it was so intense and well done that I can assure you that Martin Roth's going onto my top list of DJs. Honestly, when Martin dropped 'Lift', I just went crazy. Well, so the set ended rather abruptly and another DJ went on. No, I didn't think he was very good --- I was pleased that he played 'Rej', but otherwise his set wasn't very interesting.
In response to being displeased about the main floor situation, we went downstairs to hear Chris Luzz. Just as we got down there, all the DJs were cranking out some sick house beats, until the Blake Jarrell remix of 'Comfortably Numb' came on. I had never heard the track before, so I was so amazingly and pleasantly suprised to find that such a wonderful track existed. One of my friends quickly says, "We've got to leave after this song... that would be such a high note to end on". Sure enough, we headed out right after that track, and made our confused ways home.
EDIT: P.S., guys, you forgot 'Delerium - Silence (Trentemoller 2006 Remix)' --- it was definately played at the party --- I loooove this mix.
i planned on going, but got sucked in by the ex-somethingorother... fucking women are the devil.
Props to Eco and company for putting this together. I spent most of the night in the basement. Tyas/Luzz/Deepspell were def playing my style of music. Went upstairs for a few minutes and was pretty disapointed in what I was hearing.....way to cheesie for my taste. I was looking forward to checking out Roth after listening to his NYC demo which I thought was really good. Maybe I didn't stick around long enough? Wish I would have been up there to hear Lift...oh well. Everybody there seemed like they were having a good time so that's all that matters. The sound was really f*cked up......they prob never tweaked it for trance because the sound was pretty good for MANDY & Burridge a few weeks ago. What time did the party go till?
Congratulations to Eco et al for putting together a really fun event. Got there pretty early, just before 11pm. Really enjoyed Eco's set -- Dangerous Power once again pretty much made my night. Cannot get enough of it! Martin Roth was excellent, but did he really only spin for 2 hours? Damn, I could have used at least another hour of his set. As soon as he wrapped up his set and the next DJ came on my energy level dropped and my wasted state caught up with me. I ended up leaving around 3:30am.
I liked the space -- just the right size for the amount of people that were there. I agree with Zachias31, it kinda reminded me of Arc. I miss Arc
Great to hang with DJ Trace -- thanks for the CD!

definitely had a great time, i met Gmoney, Eco, Chinaxinsanity, o yea and BigMike finally met u i was the one that said wats up, and i met tons of other people. Overall i really loved the place !! the music was unreal loved Eco's and Martin roths set definitely got the place movin !!! after a while i got a circle goin when i started glowstringin def had fun with that. the reason there were people that looked like they came off from the street is becuz right after those sets they started playin some deep house which usually brings an underground type of crowd. I stayed until about 5 am in the main room becuz i love Deep house and had never experienced the scene. There was a cypher at the corner of the main floor and people just got in started groovin, and dancin there were some amazing Bboys doin tons of sick moves!! i havent witnessed that in such a long time and after that i left, again much props to both Eco and Matt for bringin such an awesome event!!
pretty sick night
i wanna thank michael from massive for having us down there and eco. we all had a blast. that mixer down there with no eq sucked bigtime but we def managed. also staff there wasnt too friendly either..heard alotta conflicts with a few peeps. also they kicked us out at 4 for this guy who brought no people to play..dood cleared out the floor the min he went on haha. the dood also threatened to ge tthe bouncers to "physically remove us"..what a pussy haha. comfortably numb was def a highligth of what i played and when tyas dropped amesz's remix of chilli pepers..then me followed up with another amesz rmx of insomnia..place went ooooof . good times for sure. hope to do it again sometime soon, maybe a new venue?
and yesss i managed to get my headphones back since i forgot them there..went back at like 9am..crowd was grimey as hell..all crackheads..too bad i lost the headphone cable, oh well luckily thats 10 bux instead of 150 for a new pair which i thought i was gonna have to buy.

Overall a good friggin time last night. Deepspell luzz and tyas fing killed it. Was in the basement for most of the night. Great tracks and a good crowd. Sucked when they got kicked off, the place cleared out so fast. Made my way upstairs once the basement cleared and stayed till 6ish. Crowd was sketchy at that hour. The volume in the basement was a little weak but still dance my face off. Good times!!!!

Originally posted by yankeeBaby Sot, not know the scene well? laughing....my...ass...off.....lol and I cant speak for chris, but if you are still at a club at 9 am there is huge potential for crackiness...not LITERALLY crackheads, but there is this thing we call "sketchy sundays" because if you are still up and about the day after the party (or still AT the party) there is huge potential for sketch no matter what kind of person you are. |

. I can't really comment on Ryan, Luzz, or Deepspell b/c I was upstairs most of the time till Roth was kicked off. Luzz, that comfortably numb remix was sick!
