car audio ppl... suggest a deck with.....

In light of getting myself a car in the new year, I've got to put a music deck into it that will satisfy my vast music media needs....

and so I know there are these out there, and I seek suggestions on an in-dash unit that will play... CD, MP3, usb keys, SD cards.

.. custom EQ, removable face and auxiliary input would also be a plus.

Boss has one of these, and I like it, but there must be others out there.

i'd suggest anything from alpine or pioneer

depending on your budget you can probably get an above par deck from alpine! spend alittle more and I'm sure you'll find the wow factor in their decks...superb sound as well

common... all these techies and nobody has a fancy deck in their car????

Posted by gtron on Dec-17-2006 00:29:

what's your budget like?

i would look at Pioneer AVIC-N3 or even better Eclipse AVN7000. the Eclipse has a 30+ gig hardrive, dvd player, motorized screen, and all kinds of sh!t.

Posted by SgtFoo on Dec-17-2006 20:37:

after some homework, i've found that I just want the face to be detachable, not motorized, and i really don't need dvd or video capability... just music.... from CDs, mp3s, usb keys, and sd cards

budget is max $200 CDN .... hoping for something like a $120 thing.

Posted by EarnYourKeep on Dec-18-2006 14:45:

in this case i'd use the 'you pay for what you get' rule but it's not entirely true. i guess to some standards a budget is more important that quality of sound if you're given the functionality you want.

part of a recommendation is to know what budget you're working with, what functionality you require, and the research should be simple from that point on.

Now I live in manhattan so I don't have a car, nor have i read up on any since i returned my lease. I just remember Alpine putting out some killer decks which you might be able to find now for cheap.

I'm not sure about this whole hard drive/USB thing as when I did read up on this type of stuff, none of that was in existent, if so it'd be strictly for those DVD-Type decks which went upwards to the 600 in price.

If you was going the cheap route, i would suggest to save that budget for maybe another month or so and go the extra mile for a $300 deck versus a $120 one, it could mean a world of difference in the long run.

w00ter!

listen to kid nyce. hes TOTALLY right. dont go for the $120 deck. you will regret it. you cant turn the shit up cause it sounds like ass. get something in the range of ~$300. also as previously stated get pioneer or alpine.

i currently have a Pioneer DEH-P680MP and i love it. i wish that seeking was faster in mp3 and cd mode but its faster than my old one so im happy.

edit// btw id suggest this one for pioneer and this one for alpine. they both have very good feature sets and have USB connectivity for your usb drives

Jester ICE ICE BABY

ICE = In Car Entertainment

The best in car entertainment manufacturer is meant to be Nakamichi. There units look like there 30 years old and dont have a lot of features but the sound quality is meant to be totally unbeatable.

OMG check this unit out its the best one they have at the moment, it only does radio and CD's and it retails at well over $1000 USD !!
The thing doesn't even play MP3's ahahahahahaha

Nakamichi CD-700II (Suggested retail price = $1,899.00 USD)

I would recommend alpine, clarion or kenwood.

I currently have the alpine CDA-9855R and love it, well the touch sensitive strip at the bottom can get annoying but the blue buttons on the left can be changed between 512 different colours to accurately match your dash illumination

Alpine CDA-9855R (RRP = 399 GBP ($782.66 USD))

I would definitely consider some of the units that alpine have to offer. I'm really particular about the sound QUALITY, ask my GF or any of my mates and I have found alpines to be really good.

This unit CDA-9885 looks good but is $419.00 CDN (RRP)

Most importantly

In my opinion the most important thing is the number of preouts the unit has or just make sure that it has at least one pair of them (most amps nowadays allow for interlinking). Trust me, when you fit your head unit a play it loud, after a few days you want it louder and the only way to do that is to invest in an amplifier and some decent speakers (subs and components)

Preouts are basically auxiliary out channels that allowing the connection of additional audio equipment. The alpine unit above has three pairs of preouts.

I'm not a big fan of JVC, Pioneer or Sony, I've owned several units and not been impressed with the sound quality or build quality.
Sorry I can't recommend any particular models. If I see any I will edit this post later

oddly old post, but I just bought myself a cheap lil sony deck and it kicks ass...for my needs at least. I had one back when I had a nice system and it worked perfect, dual rca outs n all.

Sony CDX-GT410U

try to find that. It plays mp3s and all them audio files, has usb + 1/8" input on the front, also comes with ipod cord coming out of the back. Also has dual rca outs, detachable face...

for some reason i have always liked sony decks, even more than the pioneers ive had.

for Car-Decks you should check-out the current Alpines (All New models coming in May)

We had some new models on Pioneer that I installed today at work and they are just replacing the older models on looks. There at reasonable price $179-DEH-P4900I and the $219-DEH-P5900I

DEH-P4900I

DEH-P5900I

Other ones too look for are new Kenwoods

I think Sony, Daul and Insingnia are complete garbage

Yeah I am looking at that Sony CDX-GT410 too, $180(Cdn$) is not bad, has USB and a 1/8" input jack for iPod on the front too. They have one in the store demo wall & it sounds good. I've owned Sony stuff before and don't think it's particularly great but this seems to be a nice unit and good price.

I was gonna get a Pioneer because they have the best tuner maybe ("SuperTuner"), but they don't seem to have a deck with USB input in that price range. JVC also has some lower-priced decks with USB.

I'm watching the flyers for deals on last years deck models, have a 1992 Accord so don't wanna spend a lot. They had a Pioneer DEH-3700 deck really cheap a month ago (40% off) but it doesn't have USB or front input.

I might need an "install kit" as I'm replacing the original cassette deck, costs about $40, any way to avoid this expense?

Already got a pair of Pioneer 6x9" rear speakers and pair of 6.5" doors ready to install, gonna try without a sub. A new deck and 4 new speaks should sound a lot better than the ancient original equip, no?

in my experience, it is not gonna sound as loud. The sound quality will be better, but most stock radios push a lot louder than aftermarket decks. Thats the only thing I noticed, but I don't think you will mind it.

but you will want a sub sooon.

...I've never come across this.

I just got the Pioneer DEH-6900UB the other day and I'm very pleased with it! It's so nice never having to burn a CD again, or deal with bringing an iPod. I can just buy a cheap 2GB or 4GB USB stick, load it up fast and leave it in my car.

Another USB deck is the Sony CDXGT610UI - similar to the 410 with front panel input jack. It has 2 pre-out pairs (410 has 1), and a 1.2m iPod connector cable (the multi-pin type with the big connector) so you do not need to buy that. Also satellite ready. They have another version, the CDXGT610U that does not have that iPod cable and slightly different appearance (red display).

review (video there too):
http://reviews.cnet.com/Sony_CDX_GT...l?tag=pdtl-list
They show it being used with 3 external sources at the same time - iPod, Zune mp3 player, USB flash drive.

(They had a good price on these web-only at http://bestbuy.ca recently $160 cdn).
