Alex Chilcott - Hemera (uplifting trance, 192kbps full)

Hey, guys, started work on a new track, it's a day or so old, really like how it's turning out, i think the mix just needs a few tweaks, not exactly sure though, i don't have any expensive monitors, so if anyone could let me know what it sounds like that'd be handy.

comments/crits appreciated!

Commenting as i listen...

Driving start... nice kick and rolling bass, basic percs to keep it that way.

Becomes a little bland as it remains the same for around 2 minutes without much progression. The bass dominates the frequency spectrum too much, and although it fills up the low-mids, theres not much variation to keep the listener interested.

I'd take some of the mid's in the bass out and put some secondary melody, pads, strings etc in to make the listener want more.

Useable melody, catchy, can't fault it all really.

I'd spruce up the track with some more loops, FX and percs to vary it slightly.

Each phrase within the track tends to drag on caused by lack of variation.

Good effort all in all, but work on that imagination to keep it interesting

6.5/10 for me

Whow, Alex! I've just listened to Hemera and it's superb! I have no bad critic. I love the main melody and its sound...well, all sounds are perfect.
I'll download the other tune you have now and take a listen.

Congratulations and, please, keep up your great work!

Intro is very long.. the Amount of Delays and Relase of the Bassline you used is much, you can use lower EQ effect Bass Line.

Moreover, you could catch the Happy mode in the song

Sounds nice, really catchy and uplifting! Awesome break! But I think something is missing... maybe it needs a change, been a bit repetitive after a while. But I like it, good job!

Takere!

Hi there. You've got some very nice and uplifting melodies. Maybe a bit on the cheesy side, but that's just my personal taste.
While the track is very good musically it lacks alot in production quality. The levels sound wrong. The kick is too weak and the different elements blend together too much and cause the track to become muddy. You could use EQ to separate the different elements of the track (As always with EQ, don't overdo it!). Also some of the synths sound a little dry, use delay and reverb to give the track more atmosphere.

lol yeh rapidshare sucks

couple of production notes...

bass is a little loose, kinda...wide...sounds like theres a bit of release on that envelope, shorten that a little bit and make the bass sound more 'punchy'

kick is a bit soft, tighten that up in the EQ or something?

the whole thing sounds very solar stoneish

good work on the break, like the synths there, they sound cool, at the peak now, the hats and such could do with a bit more of a high-end, kick is definately a bit soft..

EQ that kick and bass and make them a bit more punchy and u got this one sorted mate, keep up the good work dude

lol, if you're referring to the solar stone remix i did, then youre absolutely right, i may have nicked one or two of the synths from that. if u werent... then ur still right, it does

yeah i've always had trouble with mastering, think it's my main problem, a mate taught me some stuff but i've still got a lot to learn and experiment with. so far since i uploaded i've shortened the track (notably the intro) and added some fx and some variation in loops and other basic finishing touches, but the problem still remains with mastering. i'm gonna basically take off all my fx and eqing i've done on fruityloops and start from scratch (after saving a backup, of course ) and see if i can improve it, and i'll upload a new version when thats done.

thanks a lot for the feedback again!

ah yeah thats right, i remember ur seven cities remix, that was pretty good, excellent synth work there, i liked that one.

as for mastering, just listen to a well mastered track (one that sounds good to ur ears on ur current setup) and try to copy that sound, if something sounds a bit off, then u can always go back and modify it slightly so it sounds closer to the well mastered track.

cheers
