Another Donkey Party Genius.

Incoming House intelligence chief botches easy intel quiz

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Rep. Silvestre Reyes of Texas, who incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has tapped to head the Intelligence Committee when the Democrats take over in January, failed a quiz of basic questions about al Qaeda and Hezbollah, two of the key terrorist organizations the intelligence community has focused on since the September 11, 2001 attacks.

When asked by CQ National Security Editor Jeff Stein whether al Qaeda is one or the other of the two major branches of Islam -- Sunni or Shiite -- Reyes answered "they are probably both," then ventured "Predominantly -- probably Shiite."

the depth of the Democratic roster is staggering. this asshat was hand picked by Pelosi to head the top intelligence committee on the planet, exposed to some of the most important and classified National Security information we know. this is what America is left with. idiots

I hate to keep doing this, but I can't help but agree with you once again. This was really pretty damn stupid of him. A bit of a studying would be nice right about, oh, 3-4 years ago on his part, but a bit of cramming last minute style wouldn't have hurt either.

lol, come on. This is politics, they employ people who are popular and will actually win a seat, not people who might actually have a clue. I mean for goodness sakes they voted in Arnie as a governer
He's probably not a bad chap and he made some fun movies, but I wouldnt give him a job balancing my books.

...well maybe but it wouldnt be because he can count

Two reasons from what I hear. One is that she had to - something about a full-term as the party chair in that Committee had already been fulfilled by Harmon and Pelosi would have had to bend the rules a bit to keep her there.

The other was that Pelosi and most of the Democratic caucus wanted someone who wasn't in lockstep with Bush's illegal warrantless wiretapping scheme, which Harman has been up to this point (although I believe she's backtracked a little). The other guy was a non-option considering his corruption and impeachment record, but Harman wasn't gonna happen and Pelosi made that clear. There was talk about their personal squabbles, and I can't say whether or not that got in the way. It very well may have, but in the end the politics will trump personal matters if there were any.

i don't believe thats the case. term limits don't necessarily apply to the Chair or ranking party members. that logic would also go against the 9/11 commision recomendations for more senior tenures among Congressional intel committees.

thats a damn shame b/c everything i've read about Harman is that she's more than competent, tough, and has the intel background needed for this job, where Reyes is, well, not.

i understand that she's not anti-Bush enough. way to plan ahead Pelosi.

...and another thing. the Intel Committee Chair, no matter who sits in it, will roll on the warrantless wiretapping program. not because of personal or partisaned politics but b/c it's the right thing to do.
