How Racist Are You?

Interesting article regarding the discrepancies races have when it comes to their perception of racism. I don�t consider myself a huge bigot as I have many friends of different races and creeds. However, every now and again I do catch myself in the act of doing something that could be considered racist. For example, if I were sitting in my parked car at night and I noticed a white person walking in my direction on the sidewalk I wouldn�t think twice about it. Replace that white person with a black one and now we�re talking fright and a surreptious, involuntary reaction to lock my doors. Then again my reaction would depend on how that black person is dressed. If I see the black person in a suit, carrying a briefcase then I wouldn�t panic. However, if I saw a 50 Cent wanna be approaching, then I�d duck for cover.

So how racist are you and give us examples.

i think im a little racist.. i guess its just with what i see....

and i know its kinda bad and i shouldnt generalize with just what i see, but i do. but in a sense that i hate a race or something no, im not like that.. more like i have pre-judgments of races.

i guess i should chagne that. :/

Well anywayz, I don't consider myself a racist at all. But I do judge people individually. Like some people look fuckin unkept and gross, those people i deem as.......UNKEPT AND GROSS!

some people look gangsta, and that kind of freaks me out sometimes.

I dont hate black people or anything, but hey.....your gold teeth and swagger sure do make you look like an idiot

I'm not racist ... hell I live in an area with 100% non "white" people.

The biggest issue is often in the evening when some of them see me they kinda freak out cause they think I'm the popo and they stop rolling their joints

Well said. I think I'm definitely guilty of prejudging. I leave overt bigotry to the black panthers and the good ol' neo-Nazis!

I think that most people tend to have racist tendencies, whether they know it or not. But it's not as though racism is the worst thing in the world. Sure, it's the result of ignorance more often than not, but racism, in and of itself, is just sort of a stupid idea that people get - nothing more. All too often, people hear about racism and just clench up, like it's some big horrible thing that's going to hurt a lot of people or imprison us and do all sorts of other bad things. Not that I am necessarily defending racism, but I wish more people could actually recognize that there is a difference between a person who is racist and a person who is likely to maim or kill somebody based on race - they are two different sorts of people, even if they hold different degrees of the same values.

That being said, I think that race is almost entirely a social construction and one that is not really based upon any sort of actual human characteristics other than those assigned to people through their social upbringing. Which is why I have no qualms being racist every now and then - most of the time, it's actually quite funny just because of how stupid it is. Nothing quite so humbling as introspective analysis at times.
