THE Democratic Labor Party said pro-life policies will be its priority after gaining two seats in the new Victorian parliament. In a shock result announced last night, the DLP picked up two spots in the 40-seat Legislative Council, despite receiving only a small proportion of the primary vote. Together with the minority parties, it has won the balance of power in the upper house following the counting of preferences from last month's state election. DLP northern metropolitan region candidate John Mulholland said the win was of great significance to the party, which has not been represented at a state level since 1958. Mr Mulholland said its priority was to focus on opposing the decriminalisation of abortion, stem cell research and euthanasia. "At this stage the protection of human life is the paramount issue for us," he said. "The DLP has been a pro-life party since its inception and that's something that all DLP supporters recognise." The other DLP candidate to pick up a spot is Peter Kavanagh in the western region. However, Labor is expected to ask for a recount tomorrow with party officials believing at least one of the DLP positions - in the northern metropolitan region - is doubtful. Mr Mulholland described the situation as a "glitch" and said the party always had a solid, if small, base of support. "We reckoned it was was possible to win two seats," he said. "We've come close to winning seats quite a lot of times. "The fact we've been unable to be elected over the last few decades has not been because they didn't support our policies. "It's been because many people were misled by the media message the DLP was no longer there." The DLP candidates picked up only a small proportion of the primary vote, but complicated preference flows appear to have put them in parliament. The election commissioner will decide whether or not to proceed with recounts today. Labor has 19 seats, the Liberals 15, and The Nationals and the Greens each have two seats. |

I'm just about willing to bet that some people thought they were voting democrat. One of the Democrat candidates was Paul Kavanagh. I nearly voted for the wrong one.!!
Second that to Philby!!
Aside from that result it's good to see Labor doesn't have a majority . Maybe the upper house will operate as it should now. At least we can thank Labor for that, it's got to be a rarity for a political party to legislate to it's own disadvantrage.

yeah great.
at least its not a rubber stamp upper house pkc. Like federal
The recount took away one seat from the DLP [thank goodness] and gave one to the Greens .
That's a better result
Yay, lets all get old and die from diseases and muscle/organ degradation that could easily be cured with some simple stem cell research, just because some people can't get over the fact that a human isn't actually being hurt in the process
More like who the hell voted for the greens?? they got 3 seats wtf
