2006's most 'original' artist album?

Probably another repeated thread but what the hell.
Well, which album just rocked your boat throughout the year and went the extra mile to stand out way ahead from the rest of the competition?

Imo, hands-down this year's most original EDM artist album was Vibrasphere's Archiepelago on Digital Structures.

The sheer variety, power and emotion on this album just goes to show that psy despite being around since the mid 80's remains amongst the most under-rated and underestimated genres in the whole EDM spectrum. That's where the critics and sceptics make a big mistake.

What Vibrasphere have crafted on this album is nothing short of phenomenal. The DIVERSITY, the flow, the energy is astounding.

Vibrasphere have grabbed a handful of sub-genres namely psychedelic chill, prog trance / prog house, morning-psy , full-on psy and flawlessly moulded it into one awesome journey.
They have pushed the envelope and have raised the bar across the entire spectrum.

Try this experiment: Goto a house party and play out 'Reservoir' and watch the progheads wet themselves and then come up to you and ask you what's playing out.

TBU.

For me it has to be Trentemoller - The Last Resort.

But psy is not really the main ingredient on Archipelago.

psychedelic chill

I fail to see what's psychedelic about the downbeat tracks.

However, i agree Archipelago is the best trance album 2006.

Agreed indeed.
Btw "psychill" that is refered to in this thread is more of
Psychedelic Dub actually. Guys like Postford and Rothfield have done that style for many many years for example.

It's one of my favorite too but it's definitevely not the most original album in 2006.

Risto - Aurinko Aurinko Plaa Plaa Plaa

It's in finnish, it's entirely lo-fi and it has lyrics about mean girls tricking you into shoving a vibrator up your ass. How much more originality do you need?

Posted by RebeL9 on Dec-15-2006 10:20:

Dunno about originality but Archipelago is indeed the most "complete" trance album of 2006. You can clearly hear that they put down alot of time and effort on each track. It's also an album that goes down among a wide range of DJs. Just like last years Jaa - Fiction album. I'm pretty sure that in 5 years from now people will look back on this as a milestone album.

Everyone seems to love Kyau & Albert's new album but I never saw the light in it. Above & Beyond's album is definately the one that moved me most this year. It's not very original, but it does the trick

Shiloh - Bleed, enough said

Posted by winston on Dec-15-2006 16:52:

nathan fake- Drowning in a sea of love (Border Community)
James Holden - The idiots are winning (Border Community)
TV on The Radio - Return to cookie Mountain.
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Stadium Arcadium
Apparat and Ellen Allien - Orchestra of Bubbles (Bpitch).

Orchestra of bubbles, i thought was really nice. Them doing a live PA of that whole project must be really nice. I hear they just dont do clips sequenced on live, they do way more.

I agree with some dude above, Trentemoller came out of nowhere.

Posted by RJT on Dec-15-2006 17:13:

I don't know - Probably Nathan Fake, but honestly I can't recall a single artist album from this year I was absolutely enamored with.

Nik and Mart's album was a nice effort from the TA community, but I wouldn't necessarily call it the "most original" thing I've ever heard. Just a very pleasant, well programmed, somewhat diverse artist album.

Orchestra of Bubbles and Hundred Million Light Years for me, both incredible

Posted by winston on Dec-15-2006 17:47:

I saw some clips of Trentemoller with a band and a lead vocalist. What a change to the always boring dj with decks and what not. You should also check out SCSI-9, their album on Kompakt is brilliant.

Flowjob - Support Normality

FREq - GOSUB

Prisoners of the sun - Social success (remixes)

Tegma - Around the world in 80 Minutes

Jeff Mills - Blue Potential.

It's Detroit techno... but orchestral Detroit techno.

+1, Line of Nine has a bunch of goood tunes..really dug senorita tristeza and on the edge..trentemoller put out a fairly good album as well, tv on the radio's album is prob the most unique artist album ive heard this year but its not edm...havent heard Archipelago in its entirety yet..

Posted by Ian on Dec-15-2006 19:48:

another one

not a lot needed to say, Protoculture = the cream of melodic morning-psy

Posted by basd on Dec-15-2006 23:36:

Hmm.. hadn't heard the Apparat & Ellen Allien album until now because I usually steer clear of the recent stuff on Bpitch, Kompakt and the likes (it's been enough for me)..

Like what I'm hearing until now very much though.. Well recommended.

Posted by RJT on Dec-15-2006 23:38:

I missed out on a fair amount of these throughout the year, thanks for the super 1337 heads up everyone

Posted by TranceArmstrong on Dec-15-2006 23:46:

most original? hmmm, I'm thinking of something that was at times Loud, Electronic, yet Ferocious as well....

in all seriousness, I'm familiar with Vibrasphere and Tegma and all that psy-prog but haven't heard much actually. I will check these albums out. This thread is a bit too 1337 for me sadly.

Indeed, but Jeff Mills himself just didn't deliver, though the orchestra sure did. I'd have prefered it without the drum machine.

So, I'm gonna have to say Burial's album wins:

http://www.discogs.com/release/689255

Everyone should hear it.
