dust collecting needles on TT's

hey guys.

i have a question (which might already ne asked and answered before,sorry for that then). on my TT's (i still own them, and only use vinyl, no CDJ-shite ), i have 2 ortofon sound systems.

the problem that occurs with almost every vinyl i play is that during the play-time, the needle collects a lot of dust (from the record), and that dust then keeps sticking to the needle/stylus. sometimes you wont hear anything different to the sound, other times you will hear it, the sound gets 'distorted' a bit ...
i tried to adjust the downforce of the needle (make it less); that didnt help. it happens to both old and new vinyls, regardless if the vinyls do or dont have a lot of dust on themselves ...

the needles/stylus' are used a lot. i have a grey ortofon pro and a black ortofon pro s. they should be replaced soon, because of the usage. could that be the problem, or is there something else porbably too which caused the effetc of dust-collecting?

yeah, someone told me once (pretty sure it was here when I think about it) that if the styli pick up large dust balls and then when you lift the needle and the dust sticks to the styli rather than dropping off thats a sign to replace them.

Dunno if thats right or what, but yeah.

Cleaning your vinyl semi-regularly will also help reduce the dust build up, AM cleaner or Gruvglide work well. Even just getting some cloths and giving your vinyls a sweep before you drop the needle will help (you'd be surprised how much grit it'll pick up sometimes).

Due to Serato I haven't been using my vinyls all that much so I clean them every time I use them.

Everybody has their own methods.
I use
AM Record Cleaner, it works perfectly for me.
Unless I am mistaken many TAs swear by groove glide.
There are also some mixtures of different house hold chemicals but I cant remember them.

I use Gruv Glide for the occasional touch up, and the rest of the time I keep canned air around (like you dust a PC with) on my DJ stand. Every time I put a new record down, I give it a few blasts of air. This combination seems to keep things pretty clean. I love Gruv Glide, but I read somewhere that you should only use it occasionally, as damage to the vinyl can result from overuse. Any truth to that?

personally id replace the needles and clean every record that ur gunna drop, not clean to the point where u could eat mashed potato off it but just a brush off and polish with a sleeve or something?

Coffee filters (oddly enough) have done a good job of wiping dust off of my vinyls, and they're not nearly as abrasive as paper towels or the like. Still, I would like to try the Gruv Glide solution soon...

I didn't think of using a duster on my vinyls. Thanks for the tip!

thnx all y'all for the advice. ill try to get 2 new stylus' asap, together with a cleaning kit for records (theyre not so expensive i think). i can then buy them together with the new mixer me and my dj-friend will be buying, a Reloop RMX 40 BPM ()
