Review: Kaskade at Footwork 16.12.06

Wow.

Not only was this guy amazing as far as attitude goes, he also provided one of the best parties of the year - pity he couldn't have played for longer.

Now those of you that know me, know that I adore gritty electro/techno - dark and dirty as can be but I was swayed back into my funky, soulful, sometimes-discoesque happy place by this man.

Played a journey of tracks, some old, new, popular and anthematic ones.

I love this man, this was one great party!

I wanted to go to this

Glad you had a good time Rach!

easily one of the best sets I've heard this year...Kaskade was brilliant and the crowd/vibe was incredible.

proper review after brunch :P

I missed out on some sexy sound

Posted by English Rachel on Dec-17-2006 18:59:

Oh yes, forgot one MAJOR point....

The clientele and the buzz they provided was jaw-dropping, I never wanted it to end. Smiles from everyone; I will bet there is some faceache this morning! Reminded me of the old days, people there for the music, no pretence, no attitude, no shoving or being rude to anyone - last night was magical for this reason and I, for one, will never forget it and will always hope that I find it again, one day.

I think I've found my new favorite club. After a year of being completely bored with what TO clubs have to offer, I've finally found one I hope to spend more time at. As I said to Mark: "Footwork is the new System", and then a drop of water fell onto me from the pipes above. Yup! The new System!!! The bouncers and bartenders all seem very friendly too.
What an AWESOME crowd last night, and an even better TA group!! Gay boys were out like mad last night, and not the car wash crew kind (bonus!!). Seriously, our group was the fags and the hags, lol.

Don't remember too much of Jeremy Jive's opener aside from the fact that he played "The Cure and the Cause", and kept us dancing. Kaskade came on shortly after 1, and played a mix of dirty electro house hits (most of which you hear in the Gallery) with a mix of his own ethereal vocal productions, and a smattering of oldies. A great 3.5 hr set.

Only downside: Kaskade's poor choice of attire and lack of hair products. I wanted to run to the nearest store and buy him a sexy shirt and some hair gel. After all, we were there to drool over him too, you know. Despite all that, Jeff manages to get a picture with him that made him look better than he did in person last night.
I'll bet you he knew we were all gonna be fawning over him, so he 'dressed down' to deter us .

Thanks Dallas for the reduced list.

...

we owned the dance floor!!! I had a blast with all of you.

it is indeed the new System (without the basement ceiling height, lol).

sexy house, a great group of people, a cool space, fantastic staff...it was *perfect*

Kaskade really impressed me. I'm embarassed to say that I had *no idea* who he was until about a month ago. He really worked the crowd and his track selection was flawless. I don't know all of the remixes, but off the top of my head:

Kaskade - Be Still
Kaskade - Everything
Stardust - Music Sounds Better with You (the crowd went nuts!)
Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy (what mix?)
Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough (Dirty South mix?)
Pete Heller - Simpler (that he seemlessly mixed into another track with a good 2 minute overlay of the songs...sick)

I'm forgetting way too many...like some of the Gallery type electro stuff, as Nat mentioned...hopefully we can put together a setlist here?

At times, he played some very Lawler-esque tunes...but mostly a lot of sexy sexy non-cheese vocal house that kept us all firmly planted on the dance floor for his whole set.

definitely one of the best nights out in ages. To the folks at Footwork...don't change a thing.

Hair stylig is a major part of a DJ's abilities, sir, and can add on talent to uber-amateur hour.

Lord knows it's done wonders for BT and DJ Irene....

End hijack - Kaskade is great, I want to go to Footwork when I'm in town, and Jon Jon's lack of wavy locks only means he's that much proper of a true DJ.

WOW!

Words can not describe how amazing this night was! i am so happy i made it to this since it is one of those events that could of easily slipped under the radar.

first off: Jeremy Jive is incredible, amazing amazing tunes to open the night, i absolutely love his style. two notable songs from his set were:

late night alumni - empty streets (kaskade remix)
colette - didn't mean to turn you on (chuck love remix)

and then kaskade came on...he was amazing, played a mixture of the current house hits, his own stuff (the main reason i wanted to go, since his productions are un-freakin-believable) and some good oldies.

i actually liked the fact he had an ugly shirt on lol, shows that hes humble so much pretence in the house seen, and it was so amazing that there was none of that last night. everyone there for the music!!!

soooo many tunes to name i could go on forever...the main ones he played are:

his own:

stars align
be still
its you, its me (amazing, this completed my night!)
here i am (kaskade remix)
everything
in this life
empty streets (original)

others:

stardust - music sounds better with you (i couldn't believe when this came on, so freakin awesome, crowd ate it up!!!)
put you hands up for detroit (i know getting old, but still a fun tune)
chris lake - changes (forget which mix)
milk and sugar - Stay Around (DJ Delicious & Till West remix)
Roger Sanchez - "Lost" (D Ramirez Lost In Rave mix)
eric prydz - proper education

etc. etc. the whole night was just amazing tunes left and right...

footwork is a nice club too! the system was a little trebly at the beginning of the night, but equalized nicely as the night went on! definitely a place worth checking out in the future! I'll be anticipaing kaskade's return!

Awww

You just made my night xx

djbruuen, who are you and why didn't you come and say hello?

Nat, for sure Footwork deserves a great following... Whilst backpackers will always be my full-on fav, Footwork beat all other clubs for me last night.

I don't understand why DJs or music loving club goers go to places like this is london when footwork is open. It's absolutely my favorite club...and I dont really think I've had a fave club here in toronto since I've been living here. they were all just "ok" until Footwork opened!

looking at this and some of the other spots it sounds like it was really cheesey tbh

^^^ way to shit in an otherwise positive review thread...especially when you didn't even attend the event

Posted by endless_summer on Dec-17-2006 23:56:

I had a great time at Footwork last nite. The music from Kaskade was lighter and happy. I did not expect to hear those type of sounds/beats at the Footwork. I am used to hearing darker and dirtier stuff there. He did keep me dancing all the time (minus couple of disco songs) especially during the strech when he played a few trancy, vocal tracks. Awesome!
Kaskade did seem as if he was downplaying his sexypil last nite. He still looked attractive behind the decks especially at some points during the set when you could totally read his face and how blown away the music he's playing is making him feel. That is hot! Yum.
As far as the crowd goes, I felt so much positive energy. You could see people dancing everywhere. It was a great vibe.
There was one (that I hope is an isolated) incident where a friend of a friend, who also happens to be out of town, ripped her braclet off almost at the end of the nite, about 3:30 and the guy at the door would not let her back in inspite interventions from other staff (she paid, she was in already, she did not know etc.)
Michelle if you read this it was great to meet you and I hope you will not judge your entire stay in TO based on this experience as I am sure this could have happened anywhere including Vancouver.
Thanks all for making my nite an enjoyable one. And Dallas thank you for all the reduced guestlists

Sarah took a jab at people who are music lovers and like TiL. His comeback was warranted I think.

Posted by Skipper on Dec-18-2006 00:02:

my intention was not a jab at anyone. I don't care what the rest of you do, where you party...I just wonder when the word will get around to the DJs playing at TIL that there's a better party in town, with patrons and management and staff that are truly into the music. I've heard of quite a few DJs remark after their sets how much they really liked footwork and were surprised by it, especially after playing in other venues in toronto for so long. Kaskade is one of them...lee burridge is another I can think of off the top of my head.

I was also refering to his post above that reply which was completely UNwarranted.

I'll skip debating the TIL vs. Footwork crap. At least Sarah's main point was to comment positively on the club in question...not walk into a review thread and knock the music and the venue.

back on topic...keep those track IDs coming!

I'm assuming the sets were not recorded, were they?

Believe, me, I don't like pretention or high fashion, but even a plain white undershirt woulda been better than that lumberjack shirt. Reagardless, his infectious smile saved the night.

Kaskade= most beautiful DJ ever.

Come on Mark, this is TA - that is the new normal. People are allowed to not like your favorite "underground" club.
