Read This! a theoretical cure for viral infections

it may not be feasable now, but i believe that this way may be a possible way to cure viruses.

why not create a virus or something that specifically targets the specific viral infection based off the certain genetic make ups of the infection itself? a virus that kills another virus. hiv is always mutating. but certain genetic elements of the disease must remain constant, so why not "program" the man made virus to target those constant elements in the genetic make up of HIV, and destroy them?

essentially thats what the body's immune system does when a foreign disease enters the system, but diseases like hiv own the human body's t cells, rendering the immune system defenseless.

hiv would be the hardest to eradicate out of all the viral infections to do its complexity, but shit like herpes or hpv and other crap like hepatitis...should go down fairly easy.

IN theory.

just like getting plastic surgury, you're augmenting your immune system.

a "disease" that kills another disease. once the targeted disease is eliminated, why not program the virus to remain dormant? they do anyways naturally, until it's stimulated by whatever and becomes active again.

this is a very real way to combat viral disease, i believe this is the only solution to curing HIV...rather than how people take drugs to slow down the process. fighting fire with water, not fire with fire.

i was lying in bed this morning and this came to me. what do you think?

yeah...and how would you create this anti-viral virus?

this theory is just asking for trouble, and in the wrong hands can be dangerous.

and it's been thought up before.

i don't care if you're an alt or a new member, but make another statement like that and you're gone.

viral eugenics. its just like creating a strain of nasty plague by changing shit in the dna.

why not transplant genetic material inside an hiv cell itself with the geneitic material of the virus i mentioned earler? using the "shell" of the hiv as the housing for the new man made hiv killer?

anything in the wrong hands can be perverted. a lightbulb can be turned into a weapon.

Don't give me that crap. A lightbulb can't wipe out an entire civilization. A virus can. The second something like that comes up, governments and terrorists will do anything they can to twist it into a weapon.

Bad Idea.

Using a virus, it might be difficult to achieve what you describe. Viruses are basically envelopes with genes inside them and all they can really do is insert the material into another cell. If you are talking about some sort of virus that cruises around and destroys HIV viruses, then I don't know of any virus that actually has the capability to "destroy" other viruses directly. I suppose you could design a gene which would allow cells to recognize HIV as a disease, or which would alter sites on a cell's membrane and not allow HIV to bind to it and deliver this gene using a virus.

That being said, a custom virus would certainly be an effective way to treat bacterial infections (viruses that target bacteria are called phages btw).

that CAN happen. should we retard good thinking based on the malevolence of a few? why not take a proactive stance towards the future of the human race. yes bad things can happen in the hands of some but if we give up trying, then we're dead as a civilization.

thats a good point, rendering the virus incapable of binding would make it incapable of reproducing correct?

Posted by eFeKz on Dec-18-2006 18:09:

hiv cant be broken down because the immunse system cannot penetrate the enzymes hiv is coated in.

why not reverse it? if hiv cant be broken down by the immune system, why not create virus which augments the genetic make up of our t cells? coating the t cells in an enzyme that hiv cannot break down?

rendering hiv totally incabable of reproducing.

Ok...so the lightbulb suddenly flickers off, and the guy reaches out to change it.
It's pitch dark inside the room and he cannot see.
In the ensuing fumble, he pushes a couple of buttons in front of him.
