Question Obesity "epidemic": any solution?

The number of obese kids and adults is increasing in pretty much all non-poor countries the world over. Right now it is the worst in the U.S., Britain, and Canada, but even "traditionally" thin countries like Japan are experiencing a significant rise in the number of overweight people. What I want to ask is this:

Is it realistic to expect this trend to slow down anytime soon? As "developing" countries get better technology and richer food, their previous levels of physical activity are no longer necessary and their populations too are getting obese (which is better than starving, to be sure), while "first world" populations just keep getting heavier and heavier.

Even considering the trend of obesity, as medical technology advances it drags mean life expectancy up along with it, giving a superficial appearance that the health of the "average" person is improving. As far as government-run "health" initiatives go, I see no reason to think that these would not be resisted, and effectively, by the people they are designed to target. So, is there any reason to think that the increase in obesity will slow down, or even that the trend will reverse itself?

Solution = start putting methamphetamine in the water

Posted by jdat on Dec-18-2006 19:29:

the trend is a combination of a sedentary lifestyle and excessive eating.

Reverse the trend and problem solved.

+1

Eat healthily and exercise regulary, those are the keys to a healthy lifestyle and a possibility of a long life. Having a treat once in a while is no harm but just don't indulge.

In terms of kids who are growing up in the UK, healthier schools meals are being put in place. It didn't get a good response right away but it seems to be working slowly but surely.

It's not that hard...

Eat healthier and on a more regular basis, quit the McDonalds, Kentucky Fried Chicken, Burger King orwhatever things you have in the US. Exercise more.

That is the thing, though: I see little reason to believe that the trend will be reversed. As physical activity becomes less and less necessary and medical life-saving procedures become more and more effective and sophisticated, people can look forward to longer and "healthier" lives (healthier than those of obese people in the past) while still being overweight or obese.

Theres too much food in countries like the US and the majority of the food being manufactured is terrible for you to eat.

It's really all about money. Food companies need to make money, make their shareholders happy. By using cheap ingredients and cheap processes to make food, they save money but at the expense of their customers' health. Many of these cheaper ingredients such as hydrogenated oils and such are much worse for you to eat and will cause weight gain. So many more people end up being overweight...and when people are overweight guess what? they tend to eat even more. So overweight people are a huge benefit to food companies, to lose them would be to lose business.

Yes, the answer is for these people to look at ingredients and know what they're eating and stop eating the bad foods but it's more complicated than that. There are so many foods that are unhealthy it really is difficult for the average person to avoid them. People really need to educate themselves about what they should and shouldn't eat if they're going to be healthy.

I think the food industry needs slightly tougher regulations too. Some of these companies produced food that is awful for you and sell it for dirt cheap at places like walmart, of course less-fortunate people are going to buy it and become unhealthy. We as a country have to look at ourselves and the image we create with a population that has almost a 50% obesity rate. We have a food surplus that would feed most of the world a few times over and all we are doing is stuffing the majority of that surplus into our faces.

Actually the solution is to stay active and exercise even 30 mins out of the day. The problem isnt eating, its the fact that people eat, than sit their fat asses down and dont do shit. The dependency on cars is also causing this because nobody walks anywhere anymore. If you workout, even alittle, it doesnt really matter what youre eating (obviously shit food isnt good for you no matter what).

Stop eating McDonalds. Start being more active. Instead of taking the car across the street to buy something...try walking for change.

Obesity isn't the problem. Laziness is.

edit what Vlad said

People have offered good solutions, but what I wanted to focus on is this: Do you think that these solutions will actually be implemented, or will all the world's non-starving people continue to get fatter and fatter?

Well how would you implement these solutions? Being obese in America is a lifestyle. People's mentality and attitude needs to change.

Is it really that hard to choke down a salad and go for a run every once in a while? Fat people make me sick.

(Unless their fatness is sick related - then I can sympathise, I suppose.)

Most of you people are misunderstanding the aim of this thread. He isn't asking how people reverse the trend of obesity - I think it's pretty fucking obvious that regular exercise and moderate consumption are good ways to reverse the trend, thanks for letting us all know again though. He is asking whether it is realistic or not to expect people to listen to the facts and be more observant of what foods they eat. In that case, I would say that it is quite unrealistic to expect people, as a whole, to have any real logic when it comes to this.

Individuals keep themselves healthy anymore because of the benefits - I would say that the most common benefit is attraction of the opposite (or sometimes same) sex. Though it's a fact that healthier people simply look better, you do not necessarily have to be healthy to be considered "good-looking", and I think that this particular trend is likely to gradually change as more and more people become, well, larger. I mean, beauty is only skin-deep, right? Right.

People know the facts - they KNOW that exercise and proper eating habits will make them healthy, they may not necessarily know how to go about this, but the information for improving oneself is readily available, especially in America. People know all this. But the aim of a species is self-preservation, on many different levels, and the more proliferative will almost always be partaken by the most amount of people, regardless of "logic" or whatever warnings that people like to issue just so they can say "I told ya so" later on.

When copious amounts of food are available for a great amount of people, the people will eat. There is definitely something to be said about the health trend as far as the substance of the food many people eat though - and yeah, the corporate aspect of it is quite significant as well. People eat like shit because it's easy and it's cheap. A lot of people say that eating healthy is "easy" and it "costs less" but really, the calorie:$ ratio you get from a numberfourwithcheeseandasupersizecokeandfries is way larger than with tofu and soy milk. And so, the people will eat.

It would seem that we no longer have to fight to survive anymore - not in middle America, at least. Pretty much not anyone who has internet access and a computer who is reading this right now. I think that the trend will continue until people must really, truly survive in every sense of the word once more. When will that happen? No idea.

Posted by tranceDJ on Dec-18-2006 20:33:

Healthier food definetly has become more expensive partly because less people eat it...less demand, higher price. The McDonald's-type food is in such high demand that the price is driven down, making even more people eat it. If health food was the common thing amongst people to eat, it would be much less expensive...this isn't likely to happen anytime soon though.
