tom stephan @ sonic

i am a trance newbie, but tom stephan was OFF the hook. total mind-fuck, couldn't fucking stop dancing even if i wanted to.

big shout out to jeff button a.k.a. floorwhore, for recommending it.

Nevio was way better than usual, the break seems to have done him good.

Tom did keep me dancing but for some reason I didn't really connect with what he was trying to do.

Great bunch of people out, I love being in a club where I know 20% of the people in it

Happy Christmas Eve

No problem, did I meet you at Global Village by chance??

Anyways, I'll echo the statements made about Nevio - he really did play the roll of opener better than he ever has.... had the place grooving nicely by the time Tom came on. Frankfurt, Simpler, Dubio, just to name a few of the tracks he dropped. Well programmed, and mixing was bang on.

I only caught the first hour of Stephan, and really liked what I heard. Had some serious mashups early, and a couple of the breakdowns he had were just mental. Was pretty spent from drinking heavily at Global Village, and had quite a bit of holiday stuff to take care of - so called it a night around 5:30 or so.

Thank you to all who came out to Global before hand, I had a great time playing as usual. Thank you Mark for letting me brew up a KD batch in the kitchen in between sets. lmao. Best KD ever - I have video footage to prove this.

'til next time

Re: Re: tom stephan @ sonic

^^^

LOL...post the vid!

Sonic was fun...Nevio was really good when we got in sometime after 2am (?...fuzzy beer memory) and Tom Stephan was rippin' it up later on. Left aound 6:30 or so (?) and was told that Stephan even took it up a notch afterwards...wow.

It was my first time back at Sonic since Farina, I think...must get out there more often, I forgot how much I like the place!

Thanks Jay for twisting my rubber arm to go...good to see you Rachel, Nicola, Frank, Graham, Jeff and several others who I'm forgetting thanks to a not-so-restful 4 hours of sleep and more beers than I care to count! (happy b-day to Graham's brother too!)

McVeigh's for some Christmas eve pints...Footwork for classics on boxing day or techno on 27th (both?)...and then one hell of a NYE, no doubt!

no man, didn't make it to the global village... met you at sonic. keep me posted w the down-lo plz. once again thx for the recommendation.

tom was tearing the place down! each track was better than the one before. got there @ 3, didn't leave 'till 8/closing... still recovering, can't really walk straight still...

although the crowd turn-out was a little one sided, it's still one of the best nites i've ever had!

peace & dance on

Tom Stephan was unbelievable. I had super-chumbo-high expectations for this night, and he more than delivered -- just a killer set. Definitely in my Top 3 in 2006. I haven't heard a dj push Sonic's sound system like that since Ted Patterson last summer... WOW....

BTW, for those who are interested, you can go to his myspace page and download 4 Radio Chumbo podcast sets...http://www.myspace.com/superchumbo....awesome, just awesome...

I had a great time with all the usual suspects, particularly Little G (Graham)....still LMAO at that sketchy dude with the cape and the suitcase, and his personal grooming techniques....WTF!!!...

Posted by trance-ultima on Dec-25-2006 20:38:

sonic was amazing
im so glad i came out
i had to work the same morning but it was so worth it at the end of the night.
the second stephans came on u could tell the difference between him and the previous djs i think they all did a good job
but the tracks stephans dropped were soooooooooo amazing
kept me moving the whole time and i didnt even drink or anything totally sober lol
i cant wait to see him again
hopefully hell be back soon

Tom Stephan's killer set just destroyed the Sonic,i had no plan to attending to this party ,but now im so happey that i didnt missed it ... His set was fkn awsome, specially the last 2 hrs he was rippin it up, way above what i expected from him ... the only thing i didnt like about this party was the crowed ,which was 99% one sided, but still had lots of fun ...Btw anyone knows if the set was recorded or not ? i never heard a recorded set from SONIC yet ...

Posted by oldschool420 on Dec-25-2006 22:41:

Tom Stephan is the man. Definately in my top 3! Such an amazing sound he has going.

Graham told me about this guy when he got to my place to sketch...sorry I left at 7am but I was too tired.

Good times, music was good but got amazing around 6AM but I just couldn't last any longer.

Wow, what a fucking good night. I wasn't even supposed to come out, but boy am I glad I did.

I only heard about 1.5 hours of Nevio's set, but from what I heard, it was definately the best set I've heard him play. I was impressed.

As for Tom Stephan, I was blown away. I've seen him once before, and I didn't really like him that much (NYD 2005). He was too circuity, and had cheesy vocals playing for most of his set. This time was quite different. Twisted and bojangled tunes all night longs, with crazy builds that made you feel like you were going to lose it at any second. The set just kept getting better and better. The last 2 hours of the set was absolute madness. This was definately one of the best sets I've heard all year.

The party itself was pretty sketchy, but in a hilariously good way. That one guy Super_Jimbo was talking about was one of the funniest things I've ever seen at a club. If you want to hear about it, ask me next time you see me. It's impossible to convey how funny it was without actions.

This is the 2nd week in a row I've been very impressed by the music at Sonic. I'm really excited for about their format moving forward.

One thing I didn't like about Saturday night though were the lightshows. I thought there was no glowsticking allowed in Sonic? There was a full out lightshow, with like 4 or 5 people crouching down near the back at one point.

Thumbs down to that.

I noticed that.. it felt out of place there.
