Quebec Culture

I lie awake most nights thinking "How can I bridge the two solitudes?"

For many years I didn't have answer. Then I realized I was asking the wrong question. The right question was...

"What's the deal with Quebecers calling their cars 'mon char'?"

Is 'char' derived from Chariot? am I even spelling it right?

I recommend going to your local La Bell Province, ordering a mighty poutine, sit down and eat while you ponder the wonders of Quebec.

I don't get poutine. The gravy makes the fries go all soggy.

But Casse-crote fries on their own are generally good. Especially when they have big salt crystals visible on them. But I hate how they come in those little boxes because there's no way to have any vinegar or ketchup left once you finish eating the top half.

Indeed, "char" is a mix between car (in english) and chariot.

No wonder you can't figure out words like 'char' when you don't even understand poutine. Once you appreciate poutine, everything will make sense. That - or the consequent heart attacks with numb the part of your brain that wonders these things.

You sure about that. The word 'char' has been around much longer. For example, France had an indigenous tank program at the opening of WWII, and most tanks were designated "Char" followed by some number...
So it may have just naturally evolved to encompas other forms of transportation, albeit transportation sans the large caliber guns

Posted by Allied Nations on Dec-25-2006 18:43:

In hindi char means '4'.

That's because the french term for a tank is char d'assault

Posted by malek on Dec-26-2006 01:14:

char is for chariot, car has nothing to do with that.
