Why does everyone want small things bigger and big things smaller?

Just thought about this the other day especially at this time of the year... Anyone care to discuss or provide any examples?

I got 2 to start things off:
1) Diamonds
2) Cell Phones

1) Bigger diamond nicely cut = nice shine and looks way better
