Jake J - Swing Shift

At the beginning of the month, I was asked if I would be willing to work the graveyard shift during the two weeks leading up to Christmas. I would be given a full fourty hours a week as well as an extra $1.42 an hour, which was nice because I had been cut back recently on hours. I agreed. The first week consisted of a midnight to eight shift, and the second week was from nine in the evening until seven in the morning. Of course, that's just what we were scheduled. The second week was really a 9PM-9AM shift, which when you throw in the temporary labor workers (including hookers older than my mom and tweakers about to stab people) made for some, err... interesting times.

This mix is a result of those two weeks. Personal music players were allowed to be used, so I indulged myself with plenty of fresh, new music as well as some timeless classics to keep me awake during the evening. This mix is a representation of what kept me awake, moving and even dancing during the wee hours of the night when my body was screaming for sleep. While I do think it's a decent mix, I'm not fond of some of the transitions. Most notably Deep Wound/Hay Consuelo and Bhalobashi/Two Months Off, as the percussion in TMO tends to throw me off. There's nothing terrible, though. I would've re-recorded it, but this was the third take and it was getting close to the deadline, so I said screw it.

Special thanks to the people who wished me luck and supported me during those couple of weeks, and the TA DJs that provided mixes for me to listen to in the early hours (I'll be tossing up reviews for all of them soon). An even bigger thanks to a certain person I'll be linking here for being incredibly fucking awesome and making these past months a whole hell of a lot brighter than they would've been had I not known you. There were some nights that I wouldn't have been able to get through had I not been able to talk to you during my breaks, and Two Months Off is an excellent representation of this (zomg, sap). I you.

Enjoy.

Half hour in and I'm seriously wondering why the fuck it took you so long to get something up.

This is ace m8 - Really looking forward to the end, "Two Months Off" is easily far and away my favorite Underworld track

I won't lie. "Two Months Off" brings tears
& then at other times is so epic I know I've got the world in my fingertips

jeez, what an emo thread. i think this is the first mix i've seen dedicated to a 'special someone' definatly makes me want to hear it more.. and who might this be?! huhuhuhHUH? She must be worthy, using Underworld and all... i'm sorta jealous.

downloading.

Pardon the sidetrack, but if anyone's got the Underworld lyrics for "Like a Swimmer," post up!

right so i dl'd this but then forgot and so i'm listening now. good stuff Jake. little different than i normally would go after, but good stuff to have in the background [hopefully that's not a bad thing , heh]

but the sounds and the atmosphere composed w/ this remind of something like a night shift. as my shifts will be changing in a few days [11pm - 7am is gonna suck ass], this sounds like the night....when no one else is up. and you walk out of your building and think, "wow, i'm still fucking awake".

good job buddy, cheers.

Thanks Rob, coming from you that means a lot. Hopefully the last 30 was just as interesting, aside from the boots-in-a-dryer into TMO.

She's very worthy of teh Underworld-ness.

Thumbs up

Sweet mix man, Im loving it. Just a dark kinda buildup until 2 months off at the end. Id like to see a second mix thats like a continuation of this set. Really good mixing, too. Just ace all around.

Track 3 = fucking beautiful. Track 1 is really good too and obviously 2 Months Off. I also don't find any problems with your mixing, quite smooth. However I didn't particularly like most of the tracks, IMO they're pretty forgettable. It's a bit strange the change of mood from track 3 to track 4, goes from fantastic to quite average and then it remains that way the whole mix.. until Underworld kicks in.

So my final opinion about this set is really... mixed feelings.

I've actually felt the same way about the flow the more I listen to it. I've been asked by a couple of people to do a mix more similar to the first three tracks, so I plan on having one out here soon. Thanks for the feedback.
