REVIEW: Guvernment New Years Eve

i really dont know what else to say other than "wow!".

tonight was my first time at a club for new years eve (ive been going to banquet halls) and the guvernment has exceeded my expectations. i arrived around 11pm and the lineup outside was pretty big. everything went smoothly at the door (thanks jamil and johnny). main room coat check was really busy so we went to the koolhaus coat check where it seemed to have a smaller line. seems like they spent much of sunday decorating the venue because none of the decorations were up on saturday night.

the main room and the drink were filling up nicely. the orange room was pretty busy even though it seemed to just act as a passage way for most of the patrons that were commuting from the main room to the koolhaus.

music was second to none. every dj was giving it their all and every room was bangin. mark oliver, manzone&strong, nathan barato, greg gow, joee cons, vinyl junkies, sydney blu and aristotle did a fantastic job keeping everyone in the groove.

i left slightly after 4am because one of my friends was sober but thats okay. i had a blast and it was a perfect way to bring in the new year.

happy new year!!!

ps. pics will be up soon.

I was not feeling the music at all from mark oliver. He needs to learn what tracks to play after another...playing a trance track dropping the bead down and spinning crap is not what I call a spectacular dj as to what all of you think.

I still think they should book a name dj for new years.

Great night, didn't make it till 9 am left at about 5 am when the music was getting good.

Does anyone know what song MO played after Murder was the bass>Red blue purple? and there were vocals going 'play my music'

Just wondering, what happened to the complimentary breakfast? or was that suppose to be like at 8-9 am?

i know there were muffins going around at one point.
and there were plenty of sandwiches (veggie, cold cut, turkey, bmt) on trays in the drink along the bars.

Look at the amount of people there. You can't breathe in the Guv main room, why bother? You're just spending more.

Music wise, yes, along with the docks they are the elite of Toronto in the clubbing network so I would say it would look awesome to have a big name, but economically it makes no sense.

i didnt go last night, but i went the night before and i have to agree that mark oliver does not spin great music... specialy during the prime time 12 - 2. But i cant complain about later on at night.

i think mark oliver is the best transition dj in the city, long mixes completley seemless, if thats not two tracks that go together well then i dunno.

guvy's never gonna book a big name for new years unless everyone boycotted the place, why pay dj's when your gonna ram the place regardless, its pure business

I don't know how people still complain about mark's music at Guv...that guy has been the resident for 10 years now...he must be doing something right...just because he does not play a full 9 hours of trance anymore you go out and bash him...or say that he doesnt play good music between 12-2...the guy plays for 9+ hours...he has to cater to different tastes...not everyone only likes trance anymore..just like not everyone only likes house, prog, techno and so on for 9 straight hours...in my opinion...he made The Guvernment the BRAND NAME it is now. I undertand if you dont like what he does..people are entitled to their opinion..but going on a public message board and saying that mark needs to learn what tracks to play after another when he has been dj'ing for way over 20 years just doesnt make any sense to me m8!

I know that some poeple will come on here and attack me now for my post..but that's fine! I'm ready for it!

Happy New year Everyone and All The Best!!!

I dont like to hear trance when im at clubs... my problem was more with him playing the z1035 house tracklist during those hours(12 - 2) Sexy back Premiscuis girl detroit miami and other over played over hyped crap which i cant remember., i just didnt expect it from him. I thought he was above that. Other then that i think he is a great dj. Up Untill 12 he was playing sick sick prog, and after later at night he goes back to prog as well which is cool ... (im talking about the 30th not 31st)

Posted by Pett on Jan-01-2007 20:42:

its new years eve, u have a totally different crowd out
a good dj can adjust his programming to cater to a crowd

I second that, his set last night was twelve hours, I know I would get sick of trance after a few hours of it, gotta mix it up a bit. Other big star DJs only have 2-4 hour sets, this guy stays on for the whole night. MO has been in the business long enough, and have a big fan base in Toronto, so he's doing something right.

I agree'd with everything (somewhat) except this. Being the biggest club in a city with over 3 million people made the Guv what it is. This is in no means disrespect to Mark Oliver, but this statement is a bit over the top for me.

i think mark oliver is a great dj... i just dont like when djs cheese it up to please a specific fraction of the crowd
