this is what the working world is all about

yestarday at the end of work my bosses(I have 2) weird but..they told me the union our company works with went on strike. That means us, front office people and management have to work 12 hr shifts(7am-7pm) including breaks. Instead of doing my typical Mechanical engineering ish I am working on the CNCs, lathes and boring stuff thats these union guys do

On one hand I feel bad if they are being offered a shit contract or I am mad I have to do their task until someone else can replace the union or they come back.

I hope we get some reimburstment for these crazy 12 hr days. Has this happened to anyone before?

I think they are getting 1% a year raise and they want 4%.

Well that's bound to happen in a system that treats workers as a homogeneous collective instead of individuals, also known as US labor law.

Posted by itsamemario on Jan-03-2007 22:15:

what? you're doing someone elses work?

doesnt your contract clearly state what your tasks are?
and of course you have to be paid overtime (unless 12 hr-days are normal for you) and reimbursment for doing someone elses work...

i would demand at least 150% for hrs exceding 9 hrs doing normal work.. i'd never go for less than 200% payment doing something i wasnt hired to do..

There's a law against this sort of thing in the UK.

yeah, and the rest of the world as well, i believe.. hehe

it strikes me as funny that the US, the "leader of the world" (keep yur panties on, u know what i mean), has one of the worst laws regarding employees and such... Hehe, sounds like fun having worse conditions than a korean sweatshop :P

Seems my company booklet left me out of any scenerio to get extra cash for extra hrs. I will only receive comp hrs if needed. Thats if I need a few hrs off during the day Dag this compnay screws the union and myself.

cnc's are shit to work on, i feel for you

Posted by colonelcrisp on Jan-03-2007 22:55:

note to self..... never work in the US. In canada it is illegal for a company to use its non unionized workers to do union work if the union strikes. not only that but a person holding a Peng. doing engineering work could legally tell his boss to stuff it if his boss asks him to do that kind of work and his boss cant fire him. you may want to check your local labor codes to see if what your boss is asking you to do is in fact legal.

Call in the mafia to sort them union ******s out. Sounds shit we've had to have pay freezes in my office before, but never had our hours and job tasks changed.

Demand extra money, anti social hour pay etc. If your not trained to use the equipment tell them to fuck off and get some monkey to go and do it.

Even though the union guys have a point as 1% is a shit raise. However if I was made to work extra hours on boring projects they should be doing I would be quite pissed off twith them.

overall day 1 was weird. The union workers actual prevented one of the dilivery trucks from entering the property so teh cops were called. When I left around 6ish, I noticed a few of the picketers left in the dark and a cop car chillen just in case they get out of line. Idiots and in the end their going to get F'd.

As for me I went to the HR lady, neutral person in our company and said how do I get compensated for all these hrs. She said the upper management are having a hard time so if I help out as directed they will make life easier in some way e.g I got into grad school so they should pay for it. and I am not sure what else but it better be a Ferrari Its like rememeber if you study 16 hrs days like I did in school you might end up working 16 hrs days

as for the CNCs, I don't know how to setup the CNC from scratch but know how to hit the green run button and prepare same part again. The worst is deburring ughhhhhh.

Sad you hear your caught in the crossfire, getting shit dumped into your laps not so fun.

Take it as a flag, this shit will pop up again. Get some other options happening, maby start some home biz if you don't have one already, something to fall back on if you ever come to a point where you've had enough, till you can get another gig goin.

Posted by jdat on Jan-04-2007 14:51:

call OSHA and get your bosses asses on fire.

My other gig is I got into grad school. In my field more education = more money. They are going to pay for it also so my HR lady said this will make it easier to do so and not worry. Imagine if these workers are so vital wihtout them were are all F'd lol.

Oh yeah, its day two of the strike now and when I arrived a cop car was chillen because of last nights small situation. Still strike and me back on the CNCs ughhh

Posted by Omega_M on Jan-04-2007 15:36:

How does a mechanical engineer complain about working on CNCs ?
I am sure you are familiar with them. So what is your typical job anyways ?

Posted by DJ Mikey Mike on Jan-04-2007 18:03:

You clearly work for a proper Mickey Mouse company. What a load of shit.
