www.ud.com / United Devices have done nothing in the past couple of years both to address their user base or upgrade their client. It seems they threw all their efforts behind www.worldcommunitygrid.org -- there is some crossover - but - until I set up a better alternative the thread is temporarily gone.

IMO they started the internet computing thing at Berkeley with the SETI@Home project. I've been a contributing member of "Search for Extra Terrestrial Intelligence" since 2000. Now they have expanded SETI and named it as BOINC, which stands for Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing. A number of projects are now associated with BOINC and you can choose any one of them to get started.
