Exclamation ITunes 7 "gapless playback"

Two things for anyone who uses an ipod to listen to sets.

1. I effing pitty you. what a terrible product (apple will never see another dime from me)

2. DON'T install the latest version of ITunes ( 7.0 )

Good ol' apple decided to impliment a feature called "gapless playback" in their latest version of itunes, which CANNOT (as far as i can see) be disabled. (please enlighten me if you have found a way). This dumbass feature scans your entire library and IPOD (after transfering music to it) for silent areas so that it can gaplessly move from one song to the next (OH YAY! ). Unfortunatly if you're music files happen to be, say an hour or so long, this process seems to take days even with a decent machine. (on-the-go MY ASS) If you attempt to 'eject' your ipod during this secondary process NOTHING will be transfered to the gaypod at all. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

so.. for now im looking for a previous version of itunes

any solutions to this problem would be nice : )

Posted by Engine9 on Jan-05-2007 23:10:

i just click X everytime to stop it from scanning

also google told me u can select all files in your music library, click properties, and uncheck gapless playback

OMG i hate itunes, the biggest pieace of shit ever. I had to call tech support to figure how to use it on 2 different computers in my house.

And WTF you cant take music from ur ipod to ur computer. My computer got formated and now i hace 30 gigs of sets on ipod that i cannot put back on my computer.

Itunes software is the biggest piece of crap

iTunes only exists to enforce DRM

It's so funny always reading about people and there ipod's. It's never "go look for the answer" it's always just bashing. Start/Control Panel/TOOLS/Folder Options/View/Highlight Show Hidden Files. Then Start/My Computer/Ipod Destination/ipod Control/Music/All them folders. Drag em to folder. Not everything is gonna be right in front of ya your whole life, you might actually have to work a bit at it. bla

I just got an ipod for christmas so I am kind of new to it. I have itunes version 7 with a bunch of sets uploaded to it and I havn't had a problem yet. How does this gapless feature effect the playback? The only thing that comes to mind is if you are playing a set which has a silent break and then it advances to the next song?

Yeah, its pretty easy to figure it out on how to transfer music on a PC...

I just need to figure it out on my Mac...

first of all, thanks for the solution (if it works i shall soon see)

secondly, the reason i was so upset by this new feature was the fact that it was implimented WITHOUT ASKING ME FIRST. Am i expected to "go out and look for answers" every f*cking time they release a new version of their sh*tty software???? i think not.

regarless of this annoyance... my nano broke randomly within months of purchase even though i was as gentle as posible with the thing... not to mention the craptacular headphones that lasted what days..?

...you can see why i've been reduced to bashing.. BLAAAAA

btw i dont think this solves my problem of "determing gapless tracks" AFTER ive copied music to the ipod.

Posted by _EuG_ on Jan-05-2007 23:49:

my ipod freezes sometimes, and i have to wait for the batteries to run out.

still i love the ipod.. you cant beat its sleek design and the storage space is amazing.

i got mine as a gift so its all good

I had this problem, it's easy to fix...

you can find this in ipod help, but it takes a while to find, depending on your model of ipod:

1.slide "hold" slider to hold for about 3 seconds and then slide it back.
2.press and hold the center button and the "menu" button at the same time, till the ipod resets.

I use itunes, just because I'm not a great computer whiz, it gets the job done, but I can never, ever, ever find that "obscure" mix or track I want. It also seems that everything in itunes (or all apple products, for that matter) is "the hard sell" Geeeze! I don't want to buy, buy, buy! Everything is either buy, subscribe, or purchase upgrade. I feel like I'm in a car dealership sometimes.

I still like the old fashioned way of visiting your local record shop (not too many left) and spending some time in the used and import sections.

I will never buy an iPod. Apple can go eat a salty, swollen-dick sandwich.

I had a WHORE of a time when I bought my Nano and went to iTunes 7.

Now that I have a 30 Gig Video, it *seems* to be working alright, but I'm still waiting for some monumental cock-up to completely shatter my faith.

All the sets I have on my iPod [few and far between, I might add] are single-length so I haven't had much of an issue yet and haven't had this scanning issue you speak of.

..Yet.

1) Don't use iTunes, use EphPod or one of the many other vastly superior alternatives out there
2) To get stuff from your iPod onto your computer, use CopyPod
3) If your iPod is freezing, slide the hold switch on, then off, then hold the Menu and select buttons down simultaneously until the Apple logo appears on the iPod screen.
4) Take it back or sell it and buy a Toshiba Gigabeat or a Sandisk Sansa E200 series player
5) ...
6) Profit

Have you ever used OSx? Everything in there is like that. It never asks for Shit all it does is install crap to places you need not know. Not my cup of tea. It took me a while to get used to iTunes when I started using it a little under over a year ago but I have it trained down. But year hitting the X button does resolve that issue. The gapless playback does come in handy though when ripping mixed CDs such. But I do agree itunes 7 is a major downgrade from 6 but they force you to use it to use all these "functions" like firmware updates are now done directly through itunes.

EphPod has some issues with the new Ipod + Video. They even warn you when you download it form their site. People might want to try the Zune as well once they get over their 40 step software installation.

...what was phase 5?

Posted by DigitalMP on Jan-07-2007 18:35:

First off, select all of your songs in iTunes "on your iPod" AND "those in your library", then right-click > Get Info, check the Gapless Playback option, and set it to "No".

And to address this matter, connect your iPod, locate its drive letter in My Computer, right-click > Search for "*.mp3". Copy the results into a folder on your Desktop, then DL & install Tag & Rename and use it to rename the files using the ID3tag information ("%1 - %2" will rename them to "[artist] - [title]")

I used the winamp plug in for Ipod and also Anapod

they both fucked up the db file on my ipod so i had to reformat and install everything new, this happend 2-3 times

now i use iTunes only, everything works fine
