I just saw these on special. I'm after some good headphones for music production on the go and I've heard the AKG's are pretty good. These are on special and I've read good reviews so what do you guys think?
Remember, I don't need anything fantastic as I'm getting proper monitors at home, but I don't want anything crap either. Normally these are $250 but I can get them for $175. Seems like a good deal
That's about US$110. Any other models that I should look at around that price range?
Thanks in advance
That price is a fantastic ripoff. Normally $250? Maybe at that particular store... the list price is $150 and most stores are selling it for $100 or less because it's a discontinued model.
You're far better off with the K240S (the "industry standard"), it has better frequency response and will last longer, but is the same design in most other respects. What's more, it sells for about the same price - it's $100 at zzounds.
Like Digi said, take the 240S.
Have tried the 141 and they ain't as good and especsially ain't comptable at all...the sit too tight on the ear, just like the HD25 which basicly give a ear ache after a few... That's what I felt.
definately 240s! i love mine!
Is there much difference between the K240S and the K271S? I'm thinking of getting a pair as a replacement for my old damaged Audio-Technica ATH-M40fs. Looks like the K240s are not sold any more.

The k240s are definately not discontinued. You might be thinking of k240DF or k240M.
I wouldn't recommend the k271S phones due to their closed nature.
And they seemed to be lacking bass when I listened to them.
The k240S are semi-open, which is often more suitable for studio monitoring.
I own a pair of k240S phones and I think they're great. I use them along with my monitors when mixing.
damn it, i thought this was about the C414.
sadface.
Are you sure they are discontinued? I know the K141 Monitors are discontinued, but apparently they still make these.
Thanks for the word of caution though, I'll check out the 240's
EDIT - Oh gay, seems like zzounds don't ship overseas!
And I was planning on getting monitors from them too
EDIT2 - I can't believe shipping from US to Australia is about $100. That's fucking insane for some headphones! Looks like I will need to find some in Australia, but that's not that easy and they are bloody expensive. I really don't want to spend $300 on headphones.
I have K240 studio and I'm happy with them.
Hmm, the $100 is probably more of a "handling" cost than shipping (customs and all that crap). We have the same problem in Canada sometimes - something will be super cheap from the U.S. but by the time it gets across the border it's twice as expensive.
Fortunately we have some decent stores here that sell equipment at a reasonable price. I'm sure if you scout around you should be able to find some in AU. Better yet, make some friends in the USA.
Edit: Actually I'm incorrect, AKG is still making the K141 "Studio" model, they've just discontinued the original K141. However, the comments about the price and the comparison to the K240S were still accurate.

| Originally posted by Mmanu I have K 271s and they are by far the best cans I've ever had (and I had many, every brand you can think of) These are extremely accurate for monitoring as well, and that I've never seen (heard) before HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, WORTH 10 TIMES THEIR ACTUAL PRICE. |
240s all the way..i had many headphones but the 240s are by far the bests ones..271s are good too but good for the vocalist or someone who works in a noisy environment
I might just go with the 141's. The 240's would be nice but I can't get them cheap anywhere and I don't really need amazing headphones, just solid ones and the 141S should do the trick.
I'll go and have a listen to them next week.
you gotta love it when people are stubborn and don't listen to advice!
I'm not stubborn, I just can't get the 240S for less than $270. If I buy them online, the postage will cost an extra $100 so it ends up being the same.
Like I said, I would love to buy them, but I'm not in the position to spend that much money on headphones.
Can you seriously not find them in any store for a decent price, or have you not really looked? I bought them in-store here, not online, and they cost somewhere in the vicinity of $150 CDN (around $110-120 US) and that was about a year ago. And it wasn't on sale or at a really cheap store or anything.
I can't imagine that prices so ridiculous are just a regional thing - I think you need to look harder. Even if the K240S prices are expensive, the fact of the matter is that you're still getting totally fleeced on the 141.
Yep, I've looked and the cheapest price for the K240S is AUD$270 + postage and handling. That's about US$190. Remember, they take into account the shipping which isn't really that fair but hey, that's how this country works.
I might be able to get them for US$170 (including postage) from a nice TA member who is apparently and AKG dealer so I'll see how I go. I still need to go down to the city center next week and try everything out. I don't want to buy audio equipment before I can try it out.
So before I go, any other recommendations in the same price range as the 240S and lower?
Australia: The land of stupid audiotech markups.
I did some digging around for local dealers. Here's what I could find.

To be honest 270 AUD isn't that bad. I payed roughly the same amount for my k240s at a local store here (170 EURO).
i paid around 80 for mine! covert that however u wish!

Amazing, it really does seem to be all across AU. I don't know how you guys can afford to do any music production!
The actual MSRP from AKG is $159 US which is around $200 AUD. And you never expect to pay as high as the MSRP...
Good luck, hope you find a decent deal!

IMusician is selling K240S's for 67UKP / $130USD / $166AUD (conversions from Yahoo Finance) - although there's a 2-3 week wait. Link
I ended up buying a new pair from Ebay for 83UKP including delivery as I couldn't wait 2-3 weeks.
