Krzysztof Chochlow - Reserve Midnight(incl. Sandra Flyn & MVL Mix) [Midway]
The polish Krzysztof Chochlow caused significant havoc last year with the highly infectious and innovative 'Release'.
Equally kick-ass was the menacing 'Minimal Screw' with haunting horn riffs beefed up by a relentless bassline.
Also floating around on CD-R was his banging electro-tech remix of Safri Duo's Baiao.
He returns for his second single on Marc Van Linden's Midway label.
They're definitely not wasting any time this year and present their first offering of '07.
Original Mix (7:06) - No sooner than the word 'go', the track bursts into a solid, rolling bassline backed by a tribally percussion. After the first 16 bars or so we're treated to some cool distorted/flanged effects from which point on, the track begins to rapidly flesh out with percussive elements being gradually added (the Fred-Baker'ish hi-hats add extra dimension and groove to the track). Their layering is superb and the bassline is complimented perfectly.
At around the 2 minute mark we enter a mini-breakdown with some of the percussion and clap still playing on. After a very short build-up we're treated to a snippet of a riff right before the bassline kicks back in and the track chugs nicely along towards the main breakdown.
The lead synth begins to play out in the breakdown.
It sounds RVDB'ish in nature, quite menacing and harsh. It's filtered at first with lots of little fx going on in the background. The riff heard in the mini-breakdown is played repeatedly as well. The lead gradually becomes more prominent and a snare fill starts building towards a really intense climax. Just when you can't take the pressure any longer, the track abruptly stops for half a second, plays out the riff snippet again and slams and I mean SLAMS right back in with the lead synth prevalant in full force over the bassline. This is where the hi-hats add extra power to the track. The percussive elements come into play again and the track is played out in it's full form with all all the elements playing out together. In the last 16-32 bars, the lead dissapears with just the bassline and percussion playing out till the end.
A superb, powerful track that will definitely recieve a lot of club plays. - 8.5/10

Sandra Flyn Remix (9:04) - This is not so full-on as the original and starts with an fx-laden melodic breakbeat intro. The kick goes much deeper than the original and an almost psy-ish feel to it. The structure thereafter is very similiar to the original with the riff snipped being played repeatedly. The melodic breaks hit again at the 2 minute mark that gradually fade into the main breakdown. Not much is different from the original except some altered fx and a few added melodies. Similar short build-up and the bassline chugs along again.
The difference now is that we're treated to second, smaller break after about 32 bars. The structure is very similar to the main break although a little less longer in comparision. After the break, the bassline/fx and percussion play out till the end.
A more, melodic albeit equally pumping and longer take on the original . - 8/10

Midway records definitely give the impression that quality precedes quantity and Marc's upcoming 'My Way' album should be no different.
Watch out for this one sometime towards the end of the month.
To listen, goto Chochlow's and Midway's Myspace (each has one of the mixes).
