New Apple iPhone Exclusive to Cingular
Woo! for Cingular
It will be a while before I get one though if I ever do, because I love my Pearl right now. I love the ideas this has to offer, although they raise a lot of questions. I'm just right down the street from Macworld though, I wonder if there's some setup in the exhibit.
Anyhow looking forward to seeing this product launch and how it's going to affect the mobile industry.
About 45 minutes into his keynote, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said, "I have been looking forward to this for two and a half years," followed that with "Today Apple is going to reinvent the phone," and then proceeded to introduce the iPhone, which he called a leapfrog product that is much smarter than the previous generation of mobile phones, combining the iPod, mobile phone, 2-megapixel camera and an Internet communicator in one device.
Based on Jobs' demo of the iPhone, Apple has once again set the bar for others to follow, and they are far behind. Jobs said Apple is five years ahead of competitors with its software, and he is not that far off. Microsoft certainly has a lot to learn from Apple once again in creating usable operating systems and user interfaces. If the iPhone works as good as Jobs' demo, it will be a hit product.
With a 3.5-inch, 160-pixel per inch patented touch screen, the iPhone solves the user interface problem according to Jobs, making the rigid keys of mobile phones antiquated. Instead of being forced into using the hard keyboard for every application, the touch screen enable the interface to fit the application. Jobs dissed styluses as not being that useful and too easy to lose, but the first ad-on will be a stylus, especially for using the soft keypad.
The touching and scrolling user interface for accessing music and other applications is super slick, with all the nice effects from OS X graphics. "The software at least five years ahead of others," Jobs said. iTunes is used synch all media and data, such as contacts and calendar, to iPhone.
The killer app for the phone is making calls, Jobs said. The phone includes, contacts, calendar, visual voice mail, SMS messaging and quad band GSM + Edge, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The software enable multiple SMS messaging sessions at once.
The camera application also takes advantage of OS X capabilities. Using your fingers, you can resize photos on the iPhone and easily switch between portrait and landscape modes.
As an Internet communicator, the iPhone supports rich text email (IMAP or POP3), a fully usable HTML Web browser (Safari), Google Maps, widgets and Wi-Fi and EDGE networking. The landscape mode makes reading Web pages much easier and you can "pinch" the screen to resize the page. The iPhone also supports mutliple browser windows, like tabbed browsing, at once.
Jobs said the phone delivers five hours of battery life and 16 hours of audio playback. The 4GB version is priced at $499 with a two-year contract; the 8GB version, $599. Apple has filed over 200 patents related to the device, which will be available in June. Cingular is the exclusive distributor in the U.S.
thanks for the copy paste. I could have read a link.

you forgot about the (apple)tv

Finally, I have been waiting for someone to get the cell phone right! This was exactly what I have been wishing it would be! Amazing, I am so happy about this!!
On a cell phone note. I am at the CES in Las Vegas. There is LG, Sansung and Apple now for cell phones. All the other stuff is junk compared to what these companies are offering. Samsung had some awesome Cells at the show!
I will be sporting that iPhone, cancelling my T-mobile and going to cingular... WOO HOOO!!!!!
thank God for apple.
How is it exclusive to Cingular? Can't phones just be unlocked now anyway?

And I believe you are correct Bas, most phones have SIM cards... and you can place your card into any phone that accepts a SIM card. ie. I bought a flip phone on ebay for 80 bucks to avoid another contract... I inserted my SIM card and I use my phone just fine. =] ps. That looks like a badass phone |
I just want a phone

I am sure that's 5 hours of talk-life/internet useage/etc. Not on standby, lol.
With that, 5 hours is good for a cellphone that small and with that much capability.

its exclusive meaning they'll either be the first carrier to sell it for the first 90 days or 180 days; that or they'll be the exclusive carrier for it period.
lots of technology can be unlocked, especially phones; it doesn't mean that it will work properly though. In relation to what jethro was mentioning I don't think cingular is stupid enough to make this easily accessible to everyone. A blackberry or samsung is one thing, but from a marketing prespective to be the forefront of a new apple product launch, I'm sure there will be some things proprietary to cingular's network.
There really is no question that, given Apple's history, the first gen would be very janky. Even the 2nd gen, at that. It looks awesome and I love the idea/functionality of it.
As with the iPod, I'm sure they'll come out with higher capacity/lower price versions not too long after the initial model.
Gotta give it to Apple of innovation
5 hours of battery life????
Sony Ericsson FTW any of the Walkman models, have 30 hours of battery life. 2 to 3+ MP cameras, and 512 to 4 GB memory cards. Most are under $ 300 and unlocked.
Lex is right buy the 2nd gen version when it's around ~$200
Damn, I just got a new phone for xmas, and I was just starting to like it (is an LG)

actually, i dunno if i'm too keen on the new iphone. I agree with Clovis, "I just want a phone" also I was happy with my cheapo nokia flip phone i had before i got this new LG phone
the only reason I wanted a new phone (i got this one as an xmas present) was to get a GPS thingy on my phone. I had heard that the new Razors had the GPS (I hate razors but if it had GPS i could deal) so I asked my pops to get me that for xmas. I am horrible with directions and the GPS thing is so necessary for me. My dad went to the store and they didn't have the GPS on the Razors, just on their big palm phones which i definatly did not want. So he got me the LG one. Now that I've had it for a while i've grown to like it.
Although the google maps thing on the iphone is even better than the GPS thing. I'd get the iphone for that. but i'll wait a year or two
wtf is next? apple ipod/dildo

haha wtf.
I like... Now that my razr is full of sand I'm in the market for a new phone anyway
But I've heard alot of issues with unlocking phones... Guess I'll wait 'till T-Mobile carries 'em.
Just gotta get used to hearing the sand rattling around whenever someone talks really loud.
