Software Sampler..??

Hi Guys

I've just bought Cubase SX3 and am very new to all this making tunes etc. (looks pretty tough to be honest!!)

I've just bought some drum samples as the standard ones on there are pretty shite but I couldn't install them onto Cubase and was told that I needed a software sampler like Halion?

Is this a decent one or are there any other recommendations??

Thanks

get battery, its a made for drums sampler, faster for setting up drums than halion.

Battery is absolute quality but in the mean time you could just import your drum and percs samples straight into the sequencer and sequence them there (just add an audio track, make sure the progress bar is where you want the sample and your audio track is selected then go to file, import, audio - you can then just copy and paste your sample to put them where you want)! Only prob is you won't have access to the tools which are included in battery such as compression, eq, volume envelopes etc.. You'll easily find loads of free plug ins to keep you goin with that kind of stuff until you finally splash out on battery

Kontakt.
Can be used for everything

On that note, what is the best softsampler for use with AKAI CDs?

Pretty much all recent softsamplers import akai format. (note that this doesn't include drumsamplers like battery)

I have HALion. Don't get it. Overly complicated and not very intuitive at all. For a dedicated software sampler, I would plump for Kontakt.

Yeah I know Kontakt etc. can import them, I was just wondering if there are any reasons to use one over the other?

If you intend to load commercial samples from the likes of East West, Prosamples, etc., then get Kontakt (HALion is also okay though it doesn't seem to come as highly rated). If you only want it for drums, get Battery instead, it's much simpler to use.

FYI, you don't "install" samples into Cubase, you import them onto an audio track. It's a pain to sequence drums this way but I do it all the time for effects.

Also, while it's true that a lot of soft-samplers import Akai, they don't all do it very well. Hardware samples are tricky. I haven't tested extensively with Kontakt so I can't speak as to how good it is or isn't. Most soft-samplers are also god-awful for importing Emu samples.

If you've got proprietary samples and you're having any problems importing them into a soft sampler, you might want to have a look at Chicken Systems' Translator.

Hands down, MOTU Mach5. Supports all sample formats, available in all flavors (VST, AU, RTAS, MAS)

Battery is wicked for drums, Kontakt for everything else (including drums)

How long has MachFive been available as a VST? I had my eye on that a long time ago but it seemed to only be available for a Mac environment.

I'd really like to try that, too bad they don't seem to have any sort of demo.

I love Battery and use it for both percussion and sampling. Not too crazy about version 3 yet so sticking with 2 for now. I'll ease into it when I'm ready.
