My Footworks Review

Well, for the first time last night I went to FootWorks. Too sum up the reading for everyone who looks into this, I had alot of fun!

To start this review off, after me and my friends somehow met a guy who started telling us how he just did a bump of heroin, we turn around and get away from that guy, and meet some other people, who are heading to footworks. So we jump on the wagon and head over.
Now $20 to get in I was kind of like, too expensive, also, the drinks werent cheap either.
After getting inside, around I think 1:30, a women started doing some vocals to the music, which sounded great! Whoever you were, you got an awesome voice!
The music was kicking it all night, loud, deep, perfect for the dark atmosphere.
I got the sense more pills were goin down then drinking, and alot of those kind of parties, theres usually alot of sketchy people
But I have to say i was incredibly surprised how cool, outgoing, and friendly everyone was. All the girls were nice and fun to talk to, the guys weren't stand-offish, starting any fights.
I thought the age group was rather young, but most people I talked to were in their later 20's
So, all in all, an awsome time!!

The reason for this thread you ask?
Well I don't go often to T. to party, and my "idea" of this place was that it was more sketchy, small, not too party oriented place, but after going there tonight, I couldn't of been more wrong
So this review will hopefully help change that kind of image for a few others!

lol. good call!

i arrived around 3:30 with manzone&strong. the place was PACKED and wicked as usual. a lot of new faces but i obviously saw some familiar ones because people came to say hi. dekoze was finishing up and his shirt wasnt off, just kinda pulled over his head around his neck.

manzone&strong started their set shortly after and had the energy level way up, maintaining dekoze's crazy energy from before. the bass bins were getting a serious workout. my ears arent ringing at all but i feel partially deaf today.

the bongo drummer was pretty good. he was on beat unlike some others that ive seen (i dont know how those drummers even get gigs at the clubs). i also dont understand why bongo drummers like to do their thing so close to the dj booth and make it harder for the dj to hear the monitors.

lights came on at 5am like clockwork. people seemed happy with the nights festivities. and people didnt look ugly in the light so thats a good sign. stephan, if you read this, thanks for hooking shit up at the door.

ni-cd, hoping to see the pics that you took last night. if you dont post them anywhere at least hook me up with the pics that you took of me and tanya.

Ni-Cd's Review!!

CC'd to houseaddict.com as well! Enjoy!

Haven't you always said to yourself "Spontaneous parties are the best?" I mean, you're driving along, TOTALLY planning on it being a rest weekend. Time to chill, time to maybe spend some family time..eat lots of food, drink lots of your favourite alcoholic beverage, and then BAM. It hits you: you gotta go to footwork.

We've all been there. And when that magical moment comes upon you, there's only one thing to do, but heed the call of the beats, and make your way down to Brant and Adelaide, and sneak into the alley way as you feel the soft 'thump...thump...thump' emanating from the doorway. I have your attention now, don't I? Admit it! Ok, even if I don't...read on.

Work has been extremely busy and very challenging busy. You might have noticed a severe drop in posts from me of late...(or...maybe you didn't, hahaha). There are just not enough hours in the day, and the whole company is working hard to make sure things go well at the office. Friday evening I'm in my office alone, all the lights off, all the staff have gone home, and i'm burning archival DVDs, because that's what you do on a Friday night. Wait a freakin' minute!! This is Friday night!! I pop onto MSN and tell Leap that I'd rather be dancing. The deal is struck, we're off to a bday party we were invited to @ Footwork and to dance it up hard. I left the office around 8:30, just enough time to get dressed, eat, shower (in that order) and head down to footwork in time for the social hour.

On the decks:

Carlo Lio

I have to say, if you haven't heard this guy open up a club yet, you're missing out. His track selection is a little heavier than say, Nathan Barato's typical choices on opening sets, but smoooooooth beats and some deep house mixed in that is perfect for nabbing your favourite drinking, chilling out, nodding your head to, and talking with friends. I heard one track that really zapped me good, and I went up and asked Carlo for a track id--and thought at the time "i need to put this in my phone, or I'll forget it!!"....i forgot it. And its not in my phone. *smaks forehead*

Nabbed a picture of Carlo, and this crazy guy jumped into the picture:

Simon Jain in da house! A few people creeped onto the dance floor, rockin' it to the steady beats Carlo was laying down... very beaty stuff, even for early in the night, that was really great to listen to. You know, I almost wish there was a marquee board displaying the track names as they came on, so i could see/hear who produces these sweet little numbers.

I chatted it up with Simon for a bit and personally thanked him for saving my night @ Morillo (from a music stand point). Also told him he sure rocked it at the zone on NYD--- "yeah, i love playing up there, because you can see, and I can drink beer!" He also gave me some kudos for these reviews... alllll about the music, I told him, and again thanked him for bringing it lately with really solid sets.

I stopped with my friends for a moment to take an important clubber-tip picture:

It's a simple tip: If you love to dance....WEAR COMFORTABLE SHOES!

Notice how the circle of friends all have SNEAKERS on!! And speaking of some sic sneakers, anyone have a pair of these out there? I want a pair.

Btw, here's all the ppl who had their shoes in that sneakers picture:

Anas Attia, Missy, Me, Leap, and Disco!

"No, really, I want to be a DJ when I grow up!"

Jokes aside, I've always enjoyed Anas Attia's mixes; long before I ever met him, I do recall driving down to the Guv 10 year listening to one of his mixes rocking it up on the way down... I've been a fan ever since. Anas will be spinning This Thursday, January 18th 2007 at Inside Night Club. It is a Charity event, so please go out and show your love! Here's the flier:

What? What's that? Can't really make out the details? No problem, here's one I designed for the event that got rejected (shameless pity self-plug):

Which one y'all like better?

Anas, good luck with that event, all the best--your energy in this scene into some really special events is really spectacular. Keep it up!

I found out earlier in the night that Frank's energy drink was working with Footwork to promote their beverage to the clubbing world...upon entry, we were given some complimentary drink tickets for Frank n' Vodka or Frank n' Jagermeister. Those sound like creatures from a movie. So Leap and I decided to take our tickets to the test and see what the fuss was about...

They had some dog-ugly girls handing out the drinks......

(borat pause).... NOT. Disco showing his love for Footwork, Frank's energy drink, and ugly girls:

They look pretty good in those Dirndls!! (that's the right word, right? the traditional German outfit?) Girls, purchase your own here, and give your man a great fantasy! Link to site

Meanwhile, Carlo continued to deliver the beats (Leap is @ cozo RIGHT now and said Carlo's set dropped some wicked tracks, with a great build up...nice...). Carlo then handed over the decks to Sydney Blu. Yes, I know you all know my opinion about Electro... that i find a lot of electro tracks ear-bleeding, and very uncomfortable. Well. I found a coping-mechanism. When my ears start to bleed, I simply put my fingers in my ears, and keep dancing!! It filters out that squeelchiness that just doesn't grove with me yet.... ok, in all seriousness, i would still listen to electro anytime--it's just not my favourite genre--and Sydney is known for being an electro-FIEND lately. Fiend, I say. Syndey's set mixed it up pretty good for me, and it reminded me back to the party Nemo and I hit up when Sydney started her residency there! It was PACKED by this time, bodies everywhere.... and I noticed this particularly attractive gal walking by me and I stopped her and said "are you Mandy J?" Sure enough, it was!! I told her how much I admire her voice, and what a FRESH element it brings to the scene. I asked her if she'd be singing tonight? Yes--she would be. She asked me my name, and with a smile headed to the DJ booth!

Sydney and Mandy J work very well together, and the crowd was DIGGIN' the live vocal performance. The bouncer at the front was very friendly but firm that no one was to attempt to get their groove on with Mandy J whilest she was singing. I got a video, but my new cam murders sound on vid...so it's pointless to post. I'm working on a strategy to get around that, dear reader...fear not. Future reviews will carry audio with decent sound, or my great grandfather isn't King Arthur himself!

I think it was at this point that I realized I hadn't yet really said "Hi" to the bday gal we were meeting...you may remember her from my New Years review...there's those killer eyes again!

On the far right, Christian, man, she can belt out the tunes...at the end of this review, I'll see if I can stick in a video of her singing to me at the end of the night. Gotta appreciate good voices--and that's what makes Mandy J so special, what a spectacular sexy voice. If you haven't seen Sydney and Mandy J perform together.... YOU'RE MISSIN' out!! Especially ramped up on Frank's Energy Drink (tm).

Sydney's set and her portion with Mandy J singing along was pretty much my favourite time of the night, musically...it totally won me over. The dynamic duo nailed it. Sydney's set was mixed up enough that I wasn't electrocuted by electro, and I danced my heart out... and for a while lost in my own music world. When I came up for air, I noticed Christine dancing behind the speakers and waved hi, dancing it up from a distance with her. Such GREAT energy in this gal, had to mention her again. Can't wait to dance it up with her next time.

Speaking of friends, I realized Sydney was spinning...and there was no Sasha! I understand a bunch of Sydney fans were heading to Detroit to hear her spin the next day, so he was likely resting up for the trip, or working. You were missed buddy!

Sydney's set wrapped up, and the club was TIGHT with good lookin' people everywhere....then this man came to the techs, and an eerie, anticipational silence came over the crowd....

Deko-Ze!!!! This guy always eats me ALIVE with his tribal sets... but he played very little tribal that night....but he blew the crowd away never the less. Deko-Ze is someone whom I would rather not label...but if I had to, I'd say he is the king of patches. Meaning, he can lay down the beats, and patch in other track for a few beats, then flip back to the original track; patch it in....patch it out,... BOOM, crowd explodes! I witnessed this FIRST hand at Guv 10 when he threw on "Do you imagine you can get away" and patched in "A little bit Patchy - Switch". That's enough to make me do the crazy pigeon dance. Well...he took it to a whole new level this night, my friends. He laced two tracks over top of one another you couldn't even conceive of... Picture this... (lawler sunrise song--gotta get the Name of the track from Vince or Val...it's the last track on their Nathan Bday bash mix @ hotel...) with the beats of On My Back - DJ Misjah laced over top??!!! This was no train-wreck, house-fan. Oh no...this was madness, absolute house madness that threatened to squeeze all the mitochondria out of every cel in my body. I'm sure the Frank's was helping.

Vinyllllllll blissssss

I went to my favourite spot to dance @ footwork, near the DJ booth entrance (space, air conditioning, and sic bass) and spotted this hottie dancing next to me, so I nabbed a picture with her:

Mandy J can dance it UP!

The club was just packed.... hardly any room to dance like a pigeon on crack, but loads of room to have a blast:

Deko-Ze had the place so pumping that girlz were getting up on the chairs to dance--I'm glad the bouncers let them stay up there, because they were giving off a great party vibe dancing it up above the crowd:

What I found Deko-Ze's set had a lot of, were vocal tracks that all of us could sing along to. I really like that element of the night, where one of the DJs picks up the vocal element, and you can see people dancing, close their eyes, and sing aloud with the music. It really shows the ones who REALLY listen to the music and love it. Like this guy. Pickle, you crazy nut:

Deko-Ze's set started to wind down, and I saw Chinamon floating around, so I knew that Manzone & Strong had arrived... looking back to the DJ booth for the last of Deko-Ze's set, I noticed a clubbing faux-pas, I feel that is my responsibility to address. My civic-club-duty.

Exhibit A:

My dear house-lovers...never let you be the guy "who fell alseep/slumped/whatever at the DJ booth." Let's all take a few moments of silence. If you're going to be at the DJ booth (btw, GLAD they took away the raised platform Mandy J was using... it sucks when you can't see the DJ, if people are up dancing on it)... ahem, if you're going to be at the DJ booth, the following criteria must be met:

Dancing at/in front of the DJ booth
(meet one or more criteria)

Deko-Ze was cranking the beats, getting ready to hand over to Manzone & Strong for the last set of the night, and Leap caught me having a love-affair with Footwork's sic sound system...

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, footwork has a NICE sound that truly kicks hard. I bought the shirt. Ok, Photoshop did the shirt. But i had to fill up all that white with something, so why not with a plug for the club, lol! Speaking of sound, have any of you sat in the lounge chairs near the coat check? Sit there, and feel the bass--it POUNDS at that location. So if you're not one for the crowded dance floor, hit up the couches at the back.

At this point, Manzone and Strong hit the decks... again, I don't like labels, but if I had to pick one for these guys, it would be "Kings of the drops." These guys pick and hold the drops like no other DJs out there. Time after time after time do I hear them pick up the build, hold it....hold it...HOLD ITTTTT.. and then BOOM, down comes the hammer and the club erupts in bass-delicious-dancing.

Ok, they don't look like they're smiley guys, but trust me, they know their business well. You can see the hammer-action drop mid-swing in this picture. Fantastic set to close the night with.

I have to say, the lighting was a little static for the first part of the night. It sort of was on auto-beat-detection mode, I think? There was a guy behind there, but the lighting was just 'missing' something... It didn't seem to follow the drops and explode the way I'm used to at footwork (it has a GREAT lighting/laser system for that size of a club!). However, through Manzone & Strong's set, I noticed the lighting started jammin' a bit more with the music, and had a peek:

Steph on the lights! Long before I knew he was footwork management, I always thought this guy was great on the lights. Personal goal: to get one of the lighting gurus to show me how its done some day... i'm curious about it! I think next to footwork, I like TIL for their lighting system. The guv mainroom is the most insane example of lighting in a club. Oh, if you want a seizure, go to The Gallery. I think the gallery lights need an OVERHAUL... they're too much. The drink lighting system is rocking too... along with the lighting system, really like the projected sexy images on the columns that Footwork has going:

This reminds me, thank you to EVERYONE who gave me kudos in person for the reviews. I love reliving the night a day or two later and writing it up. It helps me to document the adventures and keep the memories alive for years at a time (cause i save all the threads). Totally pumps me up!

Then i started hearing some crisp tribal feel going to the beats Manzone and Strong were laying down, and looked over to see Scott "The Dragon" Schilling on the Djembe (thx for the info, Deko-Ze!). I thought Scott would be there to play with Deko-Ze during his set, but my assumptions were all wrong. The girls were DIGGIN' how Scott banged.

Disco, footwork promoter (and damn good at it too, where have I been the majority of Friday nights lately?? footwork!), and all around fantastic guy (and now, good friend to boot) introduced me to Stephanie, who is putting together a documentary on EDM. If you see her at the club...ask her about it!

Dang hot, and knows how to DANCE.

I then had the pleasure and honour of taking a picture of THIS guy. Normally, it's the other way around! The visual-contributor to the scene himself, Chinamon. I believe the pretty gal posing with him is Tanya?

Random crowd shot...chk out the hottie in the center groovin' it down:

Going back to my speaker spot, i find Pickle, still there, still dancing. I LOVE this guy, because he loves the music...and he can dance! I'm not sure if he has a good voice or not, the bass was drowing him out. Sing, Pickle, Sing!

I believe it was during Manzone & Strong's set that I heard my favoured remix of Faithless's Insomnia (was it Rene's remix, anyone know?) I pounded footwork's cement floor of dancing love when that track was laid down.

No sooner than I had begun to dance at 10:30 pm, when I realized it was 5am and the lights came on to reveal lots of tired, but happy faces.

All the booze drank, all the water consumed, all the frank's guzzled back...

Then I realized it was supposed to be a short night...i had stuff to do, and a bday party to attend for my father in Orillia... arrggggg.... well, as my business partner always says "sleep when you're dead!"

AK87 - Glad you had a good time! The experience you had, in my opinion, is regular @ footwork...ALWAYS a good time.

MagikB - u were missed. Always another party, right?

Chinamon--your wish is my command!

Until next time...

But at least there was a 10% reasonable explanation - that Soundbar started with an S, and therefore the S on soundbar could be carried to the end of the word System.

Footworks just makes no sense at all

Really? I always thought it was kind of a cool name... sorta like in the 40s, when they called a material and its factory for working with that material by the naming convention... for example: Sheldon's Iron Works. I always thought this was a play on that... FootWorks, meaning, the material is your feet, and the club is the factor you go to make them into something special... a play on dancing. Just my two cents.

the issue here is the fact that the club is called Footwork, not Footworks.

The only difference being Footwork is the name of the venue, where Sheldon is the name of the person who started/owns the company.

Sonic's
Footwork's
Guvernement's
This Is London's
Inside's
