Thumbs down

I know plenty of those They're not for real, well, they can't be

Posted by Halcyon+On+On on Jan-14-2007 08:21:

Comfort yourself knowing that the couples who seem to have this nagging need to let the world know that they "love" one another are usually the ones with the most to hide.

The same pretty much applies to anyone who goes out of their way to convince other people that he or she is one of the following:

happy with themselves
content not making much money
sure of their religion
convinced that they are smart
etc...

It's not that people are incapable of these things by any stretch of the imagination. It's the people just looooooove to let others know all about it all the goddamn time because, frankly, it's all they've got left.

haha god i hope they're not for real...my cousin's getting married...and she has known her fiance for ALMOST a year...and he just got back from iraq and it's a "huge triumph"...they're all over the papers, with their pictures everywhere, just moved into a new house and she is the most cliche "personable person" you will ever meet. it's like a movie, everything she says...you listen to her and you're like:

PUUUUUUUKE MEEEEE

I have never been attracted to you before, Caela, but now that you are bitter, I think that we should get married. Look, I know we haven't known each other for very long, but I am sure we can make it work. I mean, I know someone who's cousin is marrying this guy who just got back from Iraq - they've not even known one another for a year yet and their relationship is totally perfect. If they can do it, I'm sure that we can!

Hmmm, on second thought, I don't think this is going to work. But in the latter half of our relationship, I will be sure to tell everyone I know (and even some that I don't) that we are perfect and that we are fine and that we couldn't be more in love! I am sure that this sort of active positive thought will jump start our relationship into something interesting once more and, also, if I make everyone you know think that we are still in love, it will make it that much harder for you to leave me. And that's all I want, really. Is just somebody to hold onto and just somebody to make those lonely nights all that much easier to cope with on a social level.

Everybody (whether they know it or not) expects the people around them to play at the various roles they fill. It's just an act - but it's something we all do.

The source of your disgust is really that they are over-acting, and as a result the performance is not convincing enough to serve its social function. Because we tend to interpret human behavior and human interactions in terms of generalities, a poor job of playing at that specific role creates friction between the general idea of romantic relationships and the image that is being presented by the actors involved in a specific relationship. Your "social intuition," so to speak, rejects that image because it is not consistent with expected generality - and the resulting feeling is quite naturally one of disgust or displeasure.
