I thought that's what he was saying, yeah.

In a very watered-down sense, yes. Note the emphasis on very.

"You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.' But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also; and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well; and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust." (Matthew 5:38:45 RSV)

Jesus says love everybody (except yourself) and don't judge them.

"Love thy neighbor as thyself." Leviticus 19:18

Jesus was either correct, or the trippiest hippie ever, or a liar. His teachings are accepted by a great multitude of people, so I'm guessing it's not a lie.

That's not Jesus, that's God (two very different people in philosophy).

God, as from the old testament, was a big fan of judging and slaughtering non-worshippers.

No offence to those who are religious, but the bibles teachings are a load of bull honkey!

90% of it contradicts itself. The bible promotes slavery, beating wives and treating them like posessions. It teaches on how you should physically punish your children, your slaves, and your wives. ETC ETC ETC.

I will admit, there are a lot of good teachings in the bible, but there are also a lot of things that don't make sense.

I maintain my belief that, regardless of whether or not God truly exists, the Bible is an excellent source of moral advice/guidelines.

Why would Jesus say things different than what God did if Jesus was God's son?

Did God, all powerful and mighty, omniscient and all knowing suddenly decide to change his mind about fundamental decisions, and thought that he would let his son speak for him?

Did God become senile or something?

Posted by Fast Turtle on Jan-21-2007 06:39:

I guess he just changed his mind.

He did, after all, say he made man in his own image, and humans are pretty confused.

Some interesting things..

To christians, god is a trinity of persons. God is also believed to have always existed. They might refer to this scripture from genesis, where in the first sentence, it says, "Let us" instead of a singular "Let me, I". Since only God has the power to create, the us couldn't be refering to other beings.

Genesis 1:26
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground."

Jesus also claimed to have seen satan fall from heaven.

Luke 10:17-19
17The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name."

18He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.

Posted by Fast Turtle on Jan-21-2007 06:44:

It depends on your denomination. It seems like their views and means of teaching (New Testament vs. Old Testament) point to them not being the same person/human-shaped-entity, but you try telling Catholics that..

Most religious teachings are a lot of bullshit. They fail to really teach equality among people. It's accepted in the Christian religion that there should be equal admittance among devout Christians but if one does not accept Jesus they will not make it into heaven and probably go to hell. Now I understand that saying otherwise would lead people to think "then why should I be Christian?" But on the other hand I've never thought it was fair to say "God/Jesus loves everybody" but if you don't fully accept Jesus you're fucked and going to hell.

Thats always been my gripe with religion, especially Christianity. You can be a completely moral person throughout your life and never harm a soul but under the Christian faith if you are anything but Christian and don't accept Jesus you won't qualify to enter heaven. It basically teaches morality but no matter how moral you are if you don't accept the fundamental beliefs of Christianity you will not be "saved."

Posted by Fast Turtle on Jan-21-2007 06:53:

And aside from that, even if you've been rotten to the core most of your life, you'd still go to heaven if you believed in Christ!

1. if the golden rule (do unto others as you would have others do unto you), then it would be morally obligatory for theresa to give me head
2. it is not morally obligatory for theresa to give me head
3. therefore, it is not the case that the golden rule is an acceptable criterion for morally right behavior (1,2, MT)
