just saw this on the news, apparently she only knows how to say "mother, father" and "Stomach ache"

I read this in the news last week...totally crazy! I'd be interested in knowing how she managed to survive that long.

likewise ! i mean how does she think? if at all? she knows only a few words apparently, i imagine her thinking is limited to those words as well, and her actions were primarily based on animal instincts...its remarkable really.

If that's all she knew, it really isn't that big of a deal. Humans lived off the earth for thousands of years before living like we do now. Though it's interesting, it's not surprising in the least that she could have survived that long.

yeah a good point, i think the only reason we can communicate to each other is because institutions and social interaction taught civilization how. speaking, or just general communicating by other, means with other humans taught us how to decode messages, body language, tone, etc... of course this evolved and we have languages today...true, not so much of a surprise she survived 18 years, Neanderthals did that in the early days of civilization, but interesting nonetheless

Oh I'm not surprised at all. I'm just interested in how she did it.

Ergh... Nothing personal, but that just seems like a really close minded comment. Language actually limits our thought processes, or at least so I like to believe. If you can step outside the box of our heads briefly, and observe the way we think, we actually think with our words. Imagine if our minds could think without such a restriction. It happens from time to time, but not often. Entire concepts can be processed in less than a second due to the speed and power of our brains. This rant of mine occurred in the blink of an eye, but it's taken me a lot longer to actually type it out to express it.

Language limits our thought process since words are a serial process (ie one word, one sound, at a time sequentially), our speed and power of thought are greatly limited by our language.

For example, just because this girl doesn't have a 'word' for tree, it doesn't mean she doesn't know what one is. Keep in mind that the word 'tree' is completely arbitrary as well. Tree in no way describes what it is. It's simply a word associated with an object. The only reason we have the word 'tree' is so we can communicate clearly with others. We would all know what one is, having been aroudn them long enough, irrespective of what we called it. The difference is that when we all say 'tree', we can all go "ahh yes... I know what you're on about".

[/end rant]

There's an age limit on a person's development of language. Ugh...I sold my Psych text so I don't have the exact info here, but I know that if a person hasn't learned to use language by a certain age, they're pretty much fucked for the rest of their life.

Yes, but that's language. Thought and language are completely separate things. Just because you can't speak doesn't mean you can't think.

I don't doubt that if you don't learn to speak by a certain age it'll be very difficult to learn it again. I did first year psych at uni for the fun of it, and we did a fair bit of study on it too. Language develops at quite a young age, and if the learning isn't reinfored/done properly/whatever then, it doesn't develop properly at all.

This is exactly how intertwined the concept of thought and language are... we shouldn't be so quick to write off someone who can't communicate effectively as someone who isn't as intelligent. I'm not saying that language can't be a reflection of intelligence. Just that they are not always necessarily linked.

Yeah that's all I was getting at. Again, I don't have my textbook anymore...so I only said what *little* I remembered.

Oh, right... I thought we could've had a nice heated debate about it
Anyway, nice that she was found. I wonder what she was eating for all those years.
