The dumbest **** I have read today

quote:
SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- A California lawmaker wants to make spanking children three and under punishable by up to a year in prison.

State Assemblywoman Sally Lieber says her bill isn't meant to monitor how parents raise their kids, but is simply an effort to protect the state's most vulnerable citizens.

Lieber argues since children can't be punished in schools, the same should apply to homes.

The anti-spanking bill will be introduced this week.

quote:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- California parents could face jail and a fine for spanking their young children under legislation a state lawmaker has promised to introduce next week.

Democratic Assemblywoman Sally Lieber said such a law is needed because spanking victimizes helpless children and breeds violence in society.

"I think it's pretty hard to argue you need to beat a child," Lieber said. "Is it OK to whip a 1-year-old or a 6-month-old or a newborn?"

Lieber said her proposal would make spanking, hitting and slapping a child under 4 years old a misdemeanor. Adults could face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.

Aides to the assemblywoman said they are still working on a definition for spanking.

Some Republican lawmakers called the idea ridiculous. But Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he may be receptive to it even though he has concerns about how the ban would be enforced.

The governor said he and his wife, Maria Shriver, did not spank their four children and used alternative methods for discipline. For example, Schwarzenegger said they found it more effective to threaten to take away their children's play time if they didn't do school work.

"They hate that much more than getting spanked," he told reporters Friday in Los Angeles.

California law permits spanking by parents unless the degree of force is excessive or not appropriate for the child's age.

actually that a pretty stupid response. You are right. Spanking a 6 month baby will surely teach the kid not to cry again.

Well, 5-6 year olds will be exempt from this law.

Hmm. I think I do.

-I don't believe in spanking any kids, and when I HAVE my own, I won't be spanking them.

Forget spanking, I'm going to give my kids the Stone Cold Stunner. Right in the middle of Burger King if I have to. And then I'll poor beer on their heads.

well i dont care if its 3 or 4 a little spanking goes a long way.

If a 3 yr old sticks his/her finger in another 3 yr olds mouth at daycare or something..(lets not blame the daycare at this time this is just to make my point) and the kid gets bit you think he will stick it in there again no cuz that shit hurt..

a 3 yr old acts up in the store and mom smacks that ass you think he will do that again .. no cuz they know that ass is gonna get whopped if they do it again.

keep in mind im not saying a beating on the verge of child abuse but a little smack.. please...

I was only spanked once. I never ran into the street without my mom again. She still regrets doing it.

and what will be your plan to keep them from acting up..

are you going to talk to them and see how they feel .....talk about their emotions?

Denying them the ability to use or do something they enjoy is far more effective than spanking. It worked for me; every time I acted up, I was threatened with having my favorite thing at the time taken away so I shut the fuck up. The only problem with this is that parents have to be able to not give into their child's disappointment when the kid realizes, "Oh, shit, I guess she actually took it away."

Posted by nchs09 on Jan-22-2007 23:32:

i actually like it. there is no need to spank a kid.. i used to listen to my parents and what not... and they didnt spank me, sometimes i didnt listen and they just reasoned, took away stuff.. etc.

That's how my mother raised me. Never once did she place her hands on me. I pulled a fit once in a grocery store and she look me in the eye and said, " Don't you EVER do that again, ever" and I stopped. Never again did I talk back, pull a ft, act out ( aside from the teenager phase I went though)

IMO, and what I and my friends have been though with parents, getting yelled at or talked to aggressively, works better than hitting your kids.

answer me this: When your kid acts out, you'll spank them....what appends when they don't take it seriously and turn around and do what they did the first time? Spank them again? You'll only end up spanking and spanking them which is how some parents start abusing their kids. ( I doubt you'll ever do that, I'm just saying as an example and what I've heard happened to kids before.

Posted by grooviebeats on Jan-22-2007 23:36:

the problem i have with taking things away..is when i was a kid you just found something else to play with. No biggie.. kids know they will get it back sooner or later i did and that crap didnt work.

Exactly.

I believe in rewarding good actions and that will always be far more positive and will get better results, than punishing bad behaviour with any kind of violence or destructive criticism.
