Dry house. . .

Any suggestions welcome to let me know how to keep moisture in my house! I hate every morning waking up with a dry nose, dry mouth, dry throat, dry eyes and dry feeling skin.

Currently I have 2 humidifiers running constantly and a big bucket of water on the floor by the heater and I even turn down the heat to 20 and it's still so dry.

any suggestions would be sooooooo it's appreciated. . .

pour yourself a glass of water and drink it when you wake up...

Sounds to me like the insulation in your place sucks. You might be screwed especially if humidifiers aren't doing anything. Do you have your windows lined with winter plastic sheeting? That might help a bit. What kind of heating does your place have? Air ducts or baseboards?

Get another humidifier?

*shrugs*

Beware of the humdifiers. They get mold and make problems worse.

Strangely this may be the best answer.

If you can't get enough hydration for your skin via the air - one may consider hydrating via intake of WATER (not soda, not juice, not anything else).

As for you problem, what type of heating do you have?

Posted by Silky Johnson on Jan-23-2007 00:10:

Sleep in the shower!

Posted by Tordan on Jan-23-2007 00:12:

turn off the heating at night?

I thought this thread was about a dry house, meaning a house that you are not allowed to have alcohol in. I was going to give you some pointers on how to sneak it in anyways. Oh well - maybe next time.

+1 (I thought this was some new b.s. sub-genre, lol)

hmmm...my place is *really* dry too, and I would wake up with the same problems...until I bought a decent humidifier and everything is now fine (it's a 720 sq.ft space with 14 ft high ceilings too).

I'd go with oldschool420's suggesting and check your insulation first. I find that whenever my heat is on, it's worse...so I leave it off as much as possible. In a building, the ambient heat from surrounding units is usually sufficient (providing your windows and door are properly insulated.

Stick to cold air humidifiers as the ones that heat the water increase the mold risk, I've been told. The one below that I bought has a cartridge that apparently helps prevent bacteria buildup. Washing it regularly will work too.

dont totally cover yourself up in a crap load of clothing and or blankets. try avoiding heating through electric or gas heaters.

Well, I just bought the one humitifier last winter, had it properly cleaned at the bay and I just bought another smaller one last week that's beside my bed. I usually shut off the heat at night - but it gets so cold in the mornings. I should sleep in the shower, haha, but I think I would turn into a prune. I will continue shutting off the heat and get another blanket/comforter if I do get to cold.

I suppose the title of the thread could be taken as a house music thread, but it's not, and I have a dry house and I depend on all of you to help me

Get a hydrometer to find out what the relative humidty really is. Honeywell makes a thermometer/hydrometer for about $20.

25% to 40% should be most comfortable.

indeed...I have mine set to shut off at 30% which is more than sufficient.

(now how accurate the sensor is in that dinky humidifier...I don't know)

I got that problem in my dorm... the central heating creates horrible dryness AND burns oxygen..so not only the air is dry and stuff, the oxygen is burnt in the air which results in morning headaches since your brain isn't getting enough(took me a while to figure the cause for my headaches)
I just turn central heating off at night(and most of the day too) and got myself an oil heater. its a little thing dont cost too much which I keep by the bed at night and under the desk during the day
try leaving your window open too! I find that it works..not full out but a little bit so fresh air could get through
but 2 humidifiers + open water not doing it is not cool
