more oakey bashing

aright guys. i myself have been bored of all the oakey bashing discussions. but i'm drunk. and its 230. and he's on 103.5FM in ny (i only listen to the radio when im home)... and theyre calling him the best and most famous dj in the world. and i just wanna give a nice big pubic fuck you to the man himself. who undoubtadly asks himself each day how much money he can make, rather than what song he should play.

Posted by [DJK] on Mar-30-2002 08:31:

ppl say that he is on a COMEBACK. I'd say he'll find it hard to win over anyone these days. Maybe he's just too old (haha). Personnaly, i think it's a matter of taste, if SOME ppl like what he playes - fine.

Another thing is that this FORUM is full of PVD addicts who just flame every other DJ/Producer which is why i don't trust most of the opinions on this board!

Note : for those pvd addicts who are going to respond, don't bother flaming me - i like PvD. As well as many other producers/dj, but he is NOT my fav. Calling PvD a GOD does not make others any worse!!!

dude, you don't have to kiss PvDs ass, trust me.

i think he's a mediocre producer AT BEST, in fact, i've only sort of liked a few of his songs...

*ahem*FOR AN ANGEL BLEW*ahem*

he's a great DJ though.

about Oakey...he's already peaked, if he wants to make a small respectable comeback like he's trying to do, i say let em try. and let his popularity remain, better than pop trash DJs getting the fame.

Posted by matt_a on Mar-30-2002 09:45:

Sure Oakey may be going off the rails but you can't say that he wasn't fucking fantastic in his hay day! He was the fucking man. Why are you flaming him for doing what he wants. Just remeber what Oakey set up oin this world. He brought trance into the wider commmunity and got alot of you addicted. Just remember that. And dazzed I'd like to see you do as good as Oakey. Stop whinging and do it yourself. That should shut you up.

You're fucking right mate!!!
Totally agree

Posted by sykadelik on Mar-30-2002 12:54:

I think PvD is a good DJ, but there are plenty of DJ's out there who don't get enough respect who are as good as him. Its just they don't play the same tracks. Unfortuantely I think Paul Oakenfold is not on this level and needs to gain about 5000 bonus points in my bookz before even getting to the end of level baddie that transports him to the same level.

not the best but surely famous dj though. everyone know oakey for some reason. oakey is famous in my books for what he has done for the club scene a few of his productions are quite nice but besides that i don't think hes the best dj in the world.

Posted by whiskers on Mar-30-2002 15:06:

whatever. those stupid fucks on the radio and mtv can say what they want. maybe oakey's gone, maybe not. the only thing i know for sure is that mtv+radio don't know jack shit about trance.

that means you shouldn't flame oakey if some prick on the air calls him the best and the most famous dj in the world

Posted by torontotrance on Mar-30-2002 15:21:

Smile

Paul Van Dyk is the greatest deejay out there. But Oakenfold WAS the greatest deejay at one time. 1999...essential mix world tour...nuff said.

dude. oakenfold was the man. he got me into trance. his essential mixes, goa silver, perfecto presents. all gold. but the way i see it. the more famous you are the more weight that is on your shoulder. you have the opportunity to go to a huge gig and play whatever you want. who's gonna tell oakenfold back in 99 what to play? and you get just about every promo in the world. this mixed with all the publicity puts you in the perfect position to introduct the world to some crazy trance. get everyone else involved, and take the half asses listeners in deeper.

but he went on 103.5 and started playing radio crap so that he can get more money. so i don't care how big you are. a BIG FUCK YOU TO PAUL OAKENFOLD. maybie this is the music he liked all along -- then why was he playing the other music? artists are supposed to be in it for the music, not the money. if you go into music and art for the money than your the biggest dumbass of all because the odds are against you. become a business man.

Yep. he got me hooked to trance

A fellow TA directed me to a few good recent sets by Oakey and I have started to like Oakey again. I still think he has skills and his track selection is very good.

I guess he has sold out...but in all honesty. Put yourself in the position to make more $$$ and then look at the alternative. He can please the hardcore or he can please the masses. We can make fun if we like, but he's looking after his interests not yours. Thats human nature...if he pleases you whats the payoff for him. He might get a smile if he happens to see a positive post by you on TA. Big deal.

I mean fine, if you don't like the guy fine...but like any artist I think what has happened is that he used his acceptance and celebrity status to branch off and do different things, different styles. Maybe it is the music he liked all along , probably not but before when he was not a famous DJ he could not get away with spinning that stuff. Now he is a household name...even though he has gone more mainstream or whatever...he knows he can follow the original formula and can be back on track. And it true...clearly most of us respect his earlier work, and as a result would definitely give him the chance to prove himself again. Thats life...some fans are fans for life and he can do no wrong in their eyes. He blew up and became a celebrity thats all, and he has handled it all as any other celebrity would have. What can the guy do.

I am siding on the pro-Oakey camp now...I think he is good.

Pointless discussion. This is all a matter of taste, which is a pointless issue to debate,as each individual will have its own opinion,no matter what poeple say about the issue in question. But anyways,I love Oakey now.Travelling(UK version of Another World)and the '94 Essential Mix blew me off my feet, and he never ceases to stir up emotions in me when he spins nowadays.Add the fact he has done so much for the trance scene(Perfecto Recs and LOTS and LOTS of remixes and productions for instance)and music in general(signing Salt n Pepa and Jazzy Jeff, producing Happy Mondays etc.,etc),and you've got the reason why he has my utmost respect, even though I think many of his earlier sets contained some bad track selections here and there.(CD2 on GU007 for instance,a mixed bag.)Whether you like him nowor before is a matter of taste as I said, but I'll always respect him for what he has done in the past. What I don't get though is why people say he has "sold out".Is that because he plays somewhat progressive now (which is a real band-wagon genre right now,no pun inteded)instead of the usual trance he did before?

hehehe, i second that!

Oakey

Why do people slag this man for making money? He needs to be able to eat hamburgers like the rest of us. Dont hate him because he is a cash cow right now, hate him because he plays the same songs almost each nite with horrid programming and crappy mixing.
I too was introduced to music by this guy and still like him. Everytime I go to see him play Im always giving him one more chance to show he is the man. And frankly the last couple times Ive seen him I could do the exact same thing he is doing.

Posted by Az on Mar-30-2002 21:37:

I don't know how anyone can say he sold out, because he hasn't hit the charts big time, he's not publicly stated that somethings sucked then done the exact opposite of what he's said. I know he's been touring with the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and other bands, but thats nothign new, he's always toured with bands...New Order, Stone Roses, U2 etc..., and you gotta remember people like us voted him the best DJ in the world in 1999, and no matter who you are, it's going to go to your head.
And so he plays a few commerical tunes now and again, so what, he may like them, and it's the minority that go against him, cos you can guarentee that if you advertise Oakie at your club it'll be packed, because he is the most famous DJ in the world, and IMO in the top 5 best DJ's in the world
my 2 cents
PS if can someone please give a detailed answer to why he sold out, and not just "cos he played commerical crap" or some shit like that. If he played commerical tracks tell us which ones

He's the best. Not on the moment but overall he's the best

Posted by infinity HiGH on Mar-30-2002 22:02:

The only thing that pisses me off about Oakenfold, is that he's given credit were it IS NOT due. Oakie sucks now. It's a fact. Compare his recent sets to his sets from 97 or 98 or 99...no comparison whatsoever. Mainstream trash claiming he's the best DJ in the world is complete bullshit. Sasha, Hybrid, PvD, AvB, Nick Warren, Digweed and countless others are all better than him right now. Oakenfold at his prime would easily rank in the top 3, with PvD and Hybrid (them 2 are my fav ) But he is average now.

Most famous? Yes, he probably is. But I'll be damned if an Oakenfold show ever sells more tickets faster than a PvD or S&D show.

Thats my opinion.

Posted by dazzed on Mar-30-2002 22:21:

EXACTLY!!

it's not soo much that oakey was on the radio playing crap that bugged me. it's that they introduce him as the world's best dj and the worlds best & most sought after remixer.

EXCUSE ME????

dazzed

my mate jon saw him 2 weeks back and said he played the second best set he's ever seen in his life, mixing spot on, track selection spot on, back to the EM days of 99, and thats NOW not 1 and 2 years ago, the guy rules, face it

Posted by StereoPrincess on Mar-30-2002 23:08:

i would like to see anyone of us pull in a crowd like Oakey or PvD or any of the other guys. I think if you have the skills, might as well use them.

Well, until I hear something from him live or on mp3 that compares to his old days even slightly, he will not be on my list of current top djs/producers/remixers. This list includes Paul van Dyk, Armin van Buuren, Sasha, Nick Warren, Orkidea and Hybrid. These people deserve the "props" that Oakenfold gets at the moment. True, very few of these guys had the influence Oakenfold had back then..but this isn't 'back then', this is now...and now, they are at the top of electronic music. Not Oakenfold.

Yes...but Oakenfold isn't using his skills...the only reason he pulls in the crowds is because he is "the best DJ in the world, and the most famous one at that." According to the radio...

Posted by Az on Mar-30-2002 23:21:

Thats cos he remixes what he wants to, doesn't get hired in to mix stuff, he does it when he wants. TBH I can't even think of a bad remix the guys ever done, theres been a couple of bad productions (Bites da dust for one, what were you thinking ), but the good to bad ratio is ceratinly higher than a lot of top producers. Don't want to seem like I'm shagging the guy in the ass too much but he's one of pioneers of dance music, and without him we wouldn't have trance as we know it.
