We've come a long way - not Fat Boy Slim
I was driving through the parking lot of the local grocery store on the way to lunch, and I noticed a nice little Mennonite family driving a brand new Chevy Suburban! I remember when they used to ride in a horse drawn carriage around here. Signs of the times? For background:

I wanted to say something really disgustingly anti-christian, mocking the fact that progress and a religion such as Christianity could not possibly correlate on the same terms, but from reading up on them, they sound like a good group of people who are far more concerned with human moral duty than most other sects claim to be. Also, they don't seem to be outspoken about stupid shit, so that's a plus.

This isn't really that uncommon any more. I live in Waterloo Region Ontario, which is home to the largest mennonite population outside of PA. I know a great many mennonites as my grandmother grew up in the heart of their community. Just like any other christian sect they range in how ardently they adhear to their religious beliefs. There are many "old order" families that still don't have electicity or vehicles or anything of the trappings of modernety. Some will have phone lines for business purposes but no other technology. Some have electicity or gas heat, some have mechanized farm equipment, some have cars, some have all the trappings of modern life. Oddly enough there really is no hard fast rule for what technologies they are allowed and what they are not, it's a judgement call on their part.
One thing I must say is that I have never known any persons who practice the Christian ideals of charity, pacifism, loveing thy neighbour, and humility with more conviction then the old order mennonites I know. I can also say I know very few people who are as content with their lives then these people.
BTW, they actually have their own car insurance company here in Ontario.
