Shoegazer
Hey everyone!
I'm still new to the Shoegazer genre and most of you guys probably dont like the genre but i'd love to get some opinions on who some of the best shoegazer artists are.
I noticed that a lot of ulrich's faves are shoegazer artists.
Thank you
I've been seeing this word bandied around quite a bit this past year, and I have to say I don't like it. I don't like it one bit.
For one, there's no R at the end.
I've already been to Wikipedia.
I'm after recommendations from you guys.
Yeah, you always are.
i gazed at a pile of shoes, wondering which to put on. It's snowed, so I decided on the good waterproof leather shoes even though they don't look good.

Shoegazer/dreampop is a very influential genre, in a matter of fact james holden once named artists like Ulrich Schnauss and M83 to play an electronic form of showgazer, namely "electro-gazer". I will agree with him. As you said, ulrich has remixed shoegaze tunes and musically speaking, ulrich's sound, with its pro-longed reverbed synth-lines and "walls of sound", is identical to the current genre. I'll suggest my favorite shoegaze band which is slowdive (ulrich has remixed "crazy for you") and all their albums- "just for a day", "souvlaki" and the remastered "pygmallion". Other good bands are Ride, Lush (especially their album "spooky"), the two classic shoegaze albums by My Bloody Valentine (especially "loveless"), as well as albums by the Autumns.
I will further suggest you to explore most bands of 4AD records (Dead Can Dance's record-label), a label specialised in atmospheric sounds that reside somewhere between showgaze, goth/darkwave and ethereal music in general. Go stgraight for Cocteau Twins and albums like Head over Heels, Treasure (a masterpiece) and Victorialand.
If you are brave enough you can go to more etehreal/darkwave realms and dig bands like Love Spirals Downwards, Mira and a great band called Lycia (the album the burning circle and then dust). If you like slowdive's sound, especially their darker, more melancholic moments you will adore these albums. Still the overall sound is very nice and pleasant. Hope i've been helpfull.
Meneedit, I think you seem like a cool guy and have a good taste in music for the most part (I'm a big Ulrich fan as well). However, I agree wiht the other guys....it's best to find stuff on your own. I spend hours sometimes just browsing Beatport or ITunes, or listening to CDs on CDUniverse or Amazon, or going to Borders (a book, music and DVD store in parts of the US) and just listening to a variety of CDs. That's the way to do it, it's a lot more rewarding than just beeing spoonfed suggestions.
Ok no worries i'll try to do that
The reason I was asking instead of browing this time is because I imagine there must be thousands of shoegaze artists and I thought that some people on here might feel strongly about one particular artist.
The other thing is I couldnt find samples of alot of the bands ulrich mentioned.
Thanks Spirit5

Well... i've sorta dabbled in this genre myself and while i've heard some actual "shoegazing" artists, the genre seems to skew between post-rock and punk/alternative (depending on which site you view different artists). From my experiences though...here are some artists to check out:
-Ambulance LTD. - LP
-Explosions in the Sky - The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place (they did the Friday Night Lights Sndtrk - very good stuff)
-God Is An Astronaut - All is Violent, All is Bright (also very good stuff - very lush soundscapes)
-Caspian
-Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas to Heaven
I'm sure there are tons more, but these are the only bands that have intrigued me. It might be a good start for more exposure to different bands/groups.
This stuff is post-rock not shoegaze. Explosions in the sky is a great band by the way.Absolutely fantastic emotional music.

Oh i forgot M83! (cross-over between post-rock-shoe-gaze with a few 80s synth-pop influences). "Before The Dawn Heals Us" was an album that blew me away.
M83's website:

And of course...
Sigur Ros
...mysterious group from iceland with a highly ethereal, and enigmatic sound...(also post-rock with shoe-gaze influences)
If you go to their web-site eyou will find whole tunes. Here i have two that you may like
"Untitled-4: The Nothing Song"

"Untitled-8: The Pop Song" (no pop at all i guarantee that!)

Their first album "Von" is more "shoegaze" then the others (listen to Myrkur...its absolutely amazing)but the next ones are better IMO.
Lastly give a try to:
Lali Puna.
A german post-rock-electronica band with dreamy qualities. You may like them.
