iTunes/Winamp/Windows Media killer?

http://www.songbirdnest.com/

I think this is the one. Once it gets closer to a full version, I expect to use it exclusively.

explain

Posted by Claude Hughes on Jan-25-2007 19:03:

I want to use it because of this. How cute is that?

Posted by Icetoad on Jan-25-2007 19:04:

Well basically it is a media player built on the premise of Firefox. A network of open source developers works on it. Apparently some of the Winamp team is with them.

I think it is best explained in this video

i saw the demo of it not long ago. i dont think it will be any kind of media killer because ppl who are used to something like winamp (like myself) just wont bother with it because winamp along with its plugins offers so much more and is far more stable.

it will be interesting to see however how these guys approach the market but just because you can listen and surf wont cut it. you already have that opition with other media players as well.

Ok, I think you have the wrong idea. If you use Firefox then you probably know all the Add-ons you can use with that. Songbird basically uses the same idea. There will be tons of Add-ons developed by professional code writers and hobbyists alike. These are what you would call Winamp's plugins.

And stability? C'mon...they are only up to version 0.21. Give them enough time to actually get to Beta or something.

One especially great feature for me is the iPod functionality. For people like me who have an iPod, but don't download from iTunes, this a godsent.

I do understand what you are stating. Its new its bound to have bugs and it needs time but comeon now, in todays market with such a huge listener base how many people do you think will leave an already proven media platform such as winamp or wmp to try out this and be stuck dealing with errors such " playlist cant be loaded "

as for ipod .. i have a ipod i use it with winamp. works like a charm

Posted by Icetoad on Jan-25-2007 19:28:

You are right, nobody will leave proven players for an early release....but again, once they get closer to 1.0 then I think you will see a lot of people go that way.

I'll use the example of IE and Firefox here. About 20% of past IE users have switched. I expect something similar for songbird.

The difference is open-source. Microsoft and Apple won't give you a feature you ask for, this way you or a buddy can write it yourself.

meh...really all u need is something that plays music..what u use doesnt really make a big deal...i use winamp and the eq on it is good enough for me..

Posted by oldschool420 on Jan-25-2007 21:46:

I like winamp, always used it, never plan on changing.

Posted by geroin on Jan-25-2007 22:04:

lol, i find this player to be really useless..
and the guy in the video pretends like fast opening of any mp3 file will always be fast, it depends on your internet connection because it buffers the file..

Posted by chinamon on Jan-25-2007 22:11:

ive been using winamp since i started listening to mp3s i dont know how many years ago and i dont think there will ever be a reason for me to switch.

Posted by TranceGrooves on Jan-25-2007 22:28:

and i rest my case.

thankyou.

Posted by Matt on Jan-25-2007 22:43:

the interface resembles iTunes far too much for my liking.

I just need something that plays music... I don't need something that can browse the web as well - that's what I have FireFox for.

I might give it a try though.

Winamp. Winamp. Winamp.

especially skinned, winamp is the way to go.

How does one use iPod with Winamp?

Posted by kotsy on Jan-26-2007 18:22:

I'm almost positive that I will be using Winamp until I die and there is absolutely nothing anyone can say or do to convince me otherwise. All I want is a small player that pops up instantly when I double click on a file (I've completely scrapped playlists and now just surf through directories).

Posted by rulzz on Jan-26-2007 19:21:

Winamp 2.91 FTW !

i had songbird for a few months and like it quite a bit, but the one thing its missing is a cue file reader plugin, so i can listen to my radio sets with tracklistings, i'm hoping someone will make a plugin like the ones they have out for winamp, somehting like mp3cue
