Best NFL Running Back of All Time
Since its still football season, i wanted to hear your opinions.
i say Walter Payton
imo the best all around back & player in NFL history. Awesome at not just rushing but recieving, BLOCKING & could even throw down field. Also who can forget his high step while trying to get by faster defenders.
hard to compare. Walter had the most class. but LT just looks stunning on the field. I say LT IF his knees don't give out.
Barry Sanders gets my vote.
Walter Payton was the best "all around" football player ever because he could and did do just about everything an offensive player could do. He ran the ball, caught the ball, threw the ball and blocked extremely well.
Ditka fucked up by not letting him score a touchdown in the Super Bowl.
barry sanders
This is a very broad question, because there are many great running backs of the past, present, and future. In the past, such greats were Franco Harris and Tony Dorsett leading their respective teams to Super Bowls. There were guys like Billy Simms (Detroit), OJ Simpson (yes him .. until he screwed up), Gale Sayers, and Jim Brown who were great, but never got a chance to see the big stage.
But in my opinion, guys like Roger Craig, Eric Metcalf, Dave Meggett, and Marshall Faulk revolutionized the duties of the running back position by turning into wide receiver backs who can also run the ball. Although not the best of blockers i might say, but they would confuse defenses on the type of plays that were drawn out for them. These guys have set the tone to what type of running back many teams hope to have, such as Brian Westbrook, LT, Steven Jackson, and Reggie Bush.
Running backs that scared many defenses in the past were Jim Brown, Emmitt Smith, Walter Payton, Barry Sanders, and Bo Jackson. Brown, Smith, and Jackson punished defenses night in and out. Payton and Sanders just embarrased defenses, and broke ankles.
wait wait!! i should of said clinton portis! haha

jim brown
people voting for Barry Sanders are most likely biased insofar that they didn't see any of the other greats who played before him. Most of us are in our 20s and such, you know.....
not that Mr. Sanders wasn't great mind you, but I'm fucking bombed right now.
I dont know about you guys, but Reggie Bush will become a great R.B too. If we have this poll in 5 years, he's name will propobly be up there.
i want to say Bettis and Franco. Steelers
I never really got to see the earlier RBs as I'm only 22, but my favorites have been Emmitt and Barry, and I'm starting to really like LT.

I'm glad so may others feel its Barry Sanders - he got my vote.
But it seems almost every player, especially that generation, all believe
Jim Brown is the best footbal player ever, not just RB.
I cant say cause i never saw Jim Brown play, but his stats ARE crazy.
Either way, pretty safe to say Brown and Sanders are the 2 best ever

Saw this poll late, too bad.
1. Barry Sanders
Detroit's offensive line was GOD AWFUL! Freaking awesome I love Barry Sanders. Carried those shitty teams into the playoffs. Can you remember any of his QB's? Scott Mitchell? Charlie Snatch? You get the point.
2. Jim Brown
Stats kind of speak for themselves and most of the NFL greats say he was the best so I can't argue too much.
3. Bo Jackson
Laugh if you will but he was the best athlete I ever saw. He had 4.3 speed in a massive muscular 230 lb frame. Ran by and ran through you. Thing is, he split half the season playing baseball and never really showed his true potential. 2nd most electrifying RB football player I've ever seen besides Barry. I was always just waiting for him to go the distance....
Bettis? Agree with Lance. He was a fat tub of goo. Got the ball and fell down after like 1 yard...carry after carry. What a joke to even include him on the list. Oooohhh goal line specialist. Please.
dude, Bo Jackson over Sweetness Walter Payton?
Even more evidence people in this thread were too young to have seen Payton. You could always do some video searching too.

| Originally posted by Dj Smitty20 but man, Payton played on some SHITTY SHITTY SHITTY teams in the mid to late 70s, plus it's not fair to compare a guy who only missed ONE game in his 12 year career to somebody who played 3 seasons. As I said, none of us here actually remember the guys before Bo Jackon, Smith and especially Barry Sanders. Trust me, if Walter Payton had played in the 90s, you'd all be sucking his cock. |

| Smith is the first player in NFL history to have five straight seasons with over 1,400 rushing yards. Smith and Jim Brown are the only players with seven straight 10-touchdown seasons to start their career. With 1,021 yards rushing in 2001, Smith became the first player in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in 11 consecutive seasons and the first to post 11 1,000-yard rushing seasons in a career. He is also the NFL's all-time leader in rushing attempts with 4,409. Smith currently holds the NFL record in career rushing yards with 18,355 and is the only player in NFL history to rush for over 18,000 yards, breaking the previous record held by Walter Payton, on October 27, 2002. He leads all running backs with 166 career touchdowns, and his 175 total touchdowns ranks him second only to Jerry Rice's 207 touchdowns. The sum of his rushing yards, receiving yards (3,224) and fumble return yards(-15), gave him a total of 21,564 yards from the line of scrimmage, making him one of only four players in NFL history to eclipse the 21,000-combined yards mark. Smith also accumulated a number of NFL postseason records, including rushing touchdowns (19), consecutive games with a rushing touchdown (9) and 100-yard rushing games (7). His 1,586 yards rushing is also tops on the NFL postseason chart, and he shares the total playoff touchdown mark of 21 with Thurman Thomas. Smith is one of only five NFL players who have amassed over 10,000 career-rushing yards and 400 career receptions. Emmitt Smith and Jerry Rice are the only two non-kickers to score 1000 points in a career. |
