Internet forums and the ironic attitudes of many of the established members

A forum n00b is expected to exhibit certain attitudes and behaviors in their posting. Most longer term members are critical when they percieve that a relatively new member has not displayed the customary respect they are due. Herein lies the irony.

The "older" user feels superior based on the fact that they have spent perhaps several years and thousands of hours posting on the internet forum in question.

No. Actually my reception here has been fairly warm compared with what many experience.

I do appreciate your kind words though.

I guess you missed the joke with mr mikey mike there. Don't worry though, if you have a really bad sense of humour & can't catch onto things so easily, there's always the "humour" forum which often isn't very funny, as well as the New york forum where you can discuss who is popping caps in whose asses.

And you figured all this out by yourself?

Wow.

There is nothing special in the fact that I figured this out. The fact that it is so obvious only adds to the irony of it.

Posted by noikeee on Jan-27-2007 14:57:

And why did you felt like coming in here, stating the obvious, and creating another absolutely useless and tiring discussion about internet forums?

Fail

/ironic attitude of an established member.

I created the thread for my own entertainment and edification.

The topic may be useless and tiring to you, but may be worthwhile to people like me who are fascinated by odd human behavior.

have you ever seen Stomp the Yard or that other cockfest movie about dancing? well basically, the "philosophy/idealogy/wankology is that the the more your are doing a completely sausage-fest activity (stomping the yard, chess tournaments, message board posting), the more skilled and experienced you are are at doing a sausagefest activity to put on the social resume.

it makes sense on TV. why not in life?

The difference is that a member who is new to any particular forum may have more experience posting on forums than the most senior member. They may also be more intelligent, funnier, etc., yet the custom is to marginalize the n00b for as long as possible. While the act of hazing n00bs can be fun for it's own sake, it looks like primative territorial posturing. The irony is in elitist intellectuals behaving like a troop of chimps.

Ah yes, another interesting ironic principle. It seems to me that anyone who posts on a forum is an attention whore to some degree. Did you not post the above statement to draw attention to yourself?

Posted by Sunsnail on Jan-27-2007 16:53:

Seems he was trying to draw attention to you actually.

More irony.

Oh the richness of it all.

Posted by Sunsnail on Jan-27-2007 17:04:

Im missing the richness...

Posted by tubularbills on Jan-27-2007 17:09:

why does the so called "n00b" feel the need to tell everyone that he/she is so great? so wise? so much more knowledgeable than the "elitests"?

sure, there is a chance that the n00b does know more about certain things. but is it possible for the n00b not to?

a freshmen in high school generally knows less than a senior. generally.

Posted by Fast Turtle on Jan-27-2007 17:18:

Look up 'seniority'.

Posted by Frenchie on Jan-27-2007 17:18:

Because most n00bs aren't n00bs at all.
