Advetising: What else can I do?

Hello again,

I am starting to freak out about our (supposedly) big event which is coming up next Weds (1/31).

I made a thread about the event in the Southeast US forum here:

FUNK IT UP

This is what we've done so far to promote this thing:

-Printed out flyers and distributed them at the local comm. colleges

-Out ad has been printed in the local free arts newspaper, The Focus

-Flyers have been put on major bulletin boards in downtown Hickory

-Flyers have been given out to our friends/people we know (Mom liked the flyer design)

-We went to the vinyl record store (and dance music hub) in Charlotte (Central Records) and dropped off flyers there.

-I posted a thread here, which has 0 replies

-I posted a thread on Spins.us, which has 2 replies from a guy who didn't read the flyer...

-We put event posts up on MySpace, and spread the word to all of our "friends"

-Last but not least, one of the prominent local DJs here (DJ Freebox), who is good friends with my friend (love how connections work out like this) is coming by and is bringing his crowd of friends/followers with him(which has guaranteed that there'll be at least a few Breaks heads in the audience).

We have done everything we could to get the word out about this event, but so far the responces from people have been slim...

What other things can I do that I haven't thought of, or should I just wait and see what happens Wed?

do you have any internet sites that show all the gigs *EG* in Aust we have inthemix + teknoscape for perth so every1 here just looks at the raves etc on that.

make sure you poster up loads and loads of posters around the area. you need to be very illegal about it with the amount you post up! ensure they dont get covered up by other posters. if so then re post them up.

pretend to be a student who has lost his key to get into halls of residence. and post lots od adverts under all the doors. students who like trance usually bring a load of less eager friends (especially first years!) - hit the students hard cos they dont have work the following thursday morning!

Yes we have spins.us, which is where all of the area promo groups post listings of their events.

Thanks for the idea rich. I'll have to ask my friend at LR to give me a "tour" of the campus Monday

sounds like you're not involved in the local scene in any way shape or form and seem to know absolutely no one at all with interests in your type of night.

Good luck with your first night. Consider yourself lucky if a single person shows up.

Sorry to sound harsh but that's the reality of the situation.

Well its kinda hard to do that when there is no scene here, and the only "scene" that exists even close-to-here is for headliners and Breaks, which is not what we're spinning (and I'm not Ferry Corsten, although I can try...)

I know its an uphill battle, but somebody's got to fight it, for the sake of having an alternative to all of the Top40 drivel that passes for a "night" here.

We have DJ Freebox (a well known local DJ) bringing his circle of people with him. My promoter knows a lot of people from the after-parties and such.

I think we could be successful if we can get the people that go to Charlotte to stay in Hickory instead. As it is now, everyone that wants a real EDM night has to drive an hour+ to Charlotte, or 3 hours (!) to Raleigh for a show.

there are enough students who like edm to fill up a wednestday night.

they just need to know about it and see a good flyer. maybe for future nights you should organise with the owner a 'free vodka shot' upon entry. or a free pint per entry (just increace the ticket price by whatever the bar owner has to pay trade price for beers - then give him the money at the end of the night.. if he gets 100 more people in and buying alcohol than he normally would then the non profit nature of the first pint wont be such an issue..

I face a similar situation in Ithaca, NY, where the scene had all but disappeared - no events but for the ocassional local ronin dnb dj and occasional gigs from students with their own equipment.

However, I made it more than getting gigs, we started an entire promotional network which is tied in with the music department at cornell university where I go to school. This way we can get funding for events, advertise legally on campus, and get events in venues close to students. The key has been getting together a group of people who really care about electronic music, and then every year building it up and building it up. I think you need to create a scene before you try to get gigs or get in with another scene if that's what you want. It takes some time an energy, as Andrew Garcia (SPAWNmaster here, who is my partner in this crusade) and I will tell you.

I meant guestlist promoters in a different sense. One way promotion is done here in montreal (and lots of other places) is by guestlists.

Promoters either put people on a reduced guest list (discounted entry for those on) or a free guestlist. When the people said promoter put on the list show up, he gets $ per punter. Usually from 2-5$ depending on size of event, price of tickets etc.

This creates incentive for promoters to get people to your party and is a sure fire way to get both parties moving...

one way of doing things really... a free list with 2 dollar incentives is a good way to get shit moving

everyone loves to be on the list

That's something I haven't heard of before. We'll have to try that for the next event. This event, however, is no cover. Hopefully anyone who is even curious about the music will come in, drop us a tip, buy a drink, etc...

nefardec, I wish we could tie our promo work in with the school. As it is we have a rough time keeping flyers posted for more than a few days before they are taken down.

Hey guys,

Just wanted to let you all know how things went last night. We had a low turnout (15 people?) due to a winter weather warning (LOL its going to snow so I can't possibly drive 10 minutes away from home ), but the vibe was really good. Everyone seemed to be enjoying the tunes, and we had some dancing later (believe me, this is major in a city where people DON'T dance).

And... I only had 1 person ask for Hip-Hop during the entire night! I think I've made a musical victory here

So yeah, thanks for all of your advice. I'm going to talk with the club owner after the Super Bowl parties, and we'll get the next party going soon...

(Pics/video will be posted soon, aka when I get a USB cable for my phone)

Congratulations. Fill a place up. Then fill it twice over. The make a DVD Video of the night's in the place it's really packed and use it as a bargaining tool at bigger clubs. Rinse and repeat. Worked for me. Superstar Dj. Tiesto...
