Moscow bans 'satanic' gay parade

Moscow bans 'satanic' gay parade

Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov has said he will never allow a gay rights parade in the Russian capital.
Speaking to reporters, Mr Luzhkov described such events as "satanic".

Moscow banned a gay march in 2006, citing the threat of violence. People who ignored the ban were beaten up by counter-demonstrators and arrested.

Gay activists say the ban breaches their fundamental human rights. They say they intend to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights.

"Last year, Moscow came under unprecedented pressure to sanction the gay parade, which cannot be called anything other than satanic," Mr Luzhkov said.

"We did not let the parade take place then, and we are not going to allow it in the future," he said.

The mayor also blamed groups which he said were receiving grants from the West for spreading what he dismissively referred to as "this kind of enlightenment" in Russia.

He thanked the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Alexy II, for supporting him in banning a gay march last year.

Defiant

Some people who took part in the unauthorised event were beaten up by right-wing counter-demonstrators or detained by police.

But the parade's organisers say they plan to hold the event in May and will appeal against the ban in the Strasbourg court.

"Trying to silence us, the Russian authorities denied us one of the fundamental human rights. The European justice will have the last say in this case," Nikolai Alexeyev, one of the parade organisers, said in a statement.

Gay activists in Russia are divided over whether the march should be held, the BBC's James Rodgers in Moscow says.

Some suggest that holding the parade at all will simply provoke a backlash from their opponents, our correspondent says.

I never liked that guy. He is very conservative, full of USSR bullshit. Why people in Moscow like him so much?

Isn't it what people from Petersburg say about Muscovites in general?

Ummmm ? Where the hell do you get that idea from? In that article, BOTH the government and Church support the same dam thing. Church and state in Russia are comingled. I remember during Soviet era prominent priests and religious leaders were also KGB agents, and since today there are a lot of former communists in power in Russia, I doubt things have changed in Church either.

Yuri Luzhkov is a big idiot, I always disliked him. He and his wife have a bunch of shady businesses in Moscow controlling real state. They jack up the prices of property and earn millions of dollars each month. Yuri Luzhkov's wife is one of the richest women from an article few months ago I read in Forbes.

Since Soviet Union's collapse, Russia only then began to ponder on democratic issues. It took West how many years to accept homosexuality? Well, dont expect Russia to accept it in their country soon, because it will have to wait. There are many people, ordinary Russians, who are against homosexuality. No need for more flames right now. Russia has other serious matters that need attention.

Just an interesting fact: Peter the Great was gay.

p.s. why must you always compare Russia to the west? I thought Russians were different, etc etc?

Russians are human beings, just like you and me. We're not animals if thats what you're implying. Or unless you have racist implications in your post, judging my your countless other terrible hate speeches that deserve a ban.

I love human beings. I see every body as a human being regardless of sex, color, religion or sexual prefrences. If I get under your skin than that just means your too sensitive.

Am I REALLY too sensitive when you say something like

Well, well ... I am too emotional, I guess. Quotes like the one above is never going to cause any sort of physical or verbal altercations!

P.S. It would be a wise idea to add a sarcastic smiley to your posts if you're sarcastic next time, Beavis! I am not a good mind reader!

Posted by Sunsnail on Jan-29-2007 23:19:

I caught it quite easily.

Oh wait ... dam, he was being sarcastic about the 'show me the forensic evidence and video footage of the dead palestinian girl'. OH WAIT ... he then said he was being serious.

the implications of that are ... @#$%$$#&*$##!@%^%$

Posted by Sunsnail on Jan-29-2007 23:24:

I didn't quite catch what you were saying there.

the article is about banning a gay pride parade

my post was "a noble first step towards separation of church and state"

if you cannot see the sarcasm in that w/o a sarcasm smiley, I would estimate your IQ at or below 75, kinda explains a lot of your posts actually

I did not say that IDF did or did not kill the girl, all I said is that there is no proof

And I'm sure 99% of them haven't.

A person in the right mind would assume this to be sarcasm. Even when shoved in the face with United Nations Human Rights report before this ridiculous reply. I am pretty sure Dopey is a way better expert in this issue than United Nations!

Posted by Magnetonium on Jan-29-2007 23:43:

So judging by his previous actions, its easy to assume by now that Dopey is an idiot. Anyhow, this thread is not about this at all, so I'll let it rest, I am sure an average person can see the truth better for himself/herself ;-) I'll leave Dopey's comments to himself next time, they guy's a complete loon. No bother wasting my time ;-)

wrong again, my post was in response to Cyrus' post about the US military

you tend to miss quite a lot with your <75 IQ dont you?

and you're even wrong about the meaning of what I said...

I was saying that 99% of the US military did not target civilians

Is this what you're referring to?

You need to take some advanced English courses, how long have you lived in Canada? Your comprehension of what you read just isn't there.

If you missed the sarcasm in my church and state post, it really shows this. I know I offend you often, but I'm not trying to now... You would be able to compose much stronger arguments if you took some private lessons from an experienced English teacher.

Are you referring to me? Cause I am only 23, the guy in my avatar is me. And no, I am far from bold.

Anyhow, the whole thing was about sarcasm labeling problems. I hardly if ever acknowledge sarcasm from a person I dont know because I ran into serious problems on an undisclosed buying website before. Taking sarcasm in the wrong way, usually the joking way had worse implications for me before. So I always take things people say seriously unless it is clearly sarcastic. So I stay on the safe side, OK? As for the 99% civilians werent targeted by Americans intentionally, I read it over carefully, and yes it was meant for Cyrus, thats true. I apologize on getting this mixed up, at least I can admit if I am wrong.

I hope you did learn some information that I posted and found it useful at least. And my IQ is much higher than 75 - I simply dont have time to read every single post.

I'm speechless.

Debating whether or not to make that my sig. I think using all of that would be too long, I can't take Cyrus' quote out.

I'm just having trouble finding the funniest part of that paragraph. The first sentence would be enough, but there is so much more! Ugh ... decisions decisions.

Because theyre full of it as well, so they vote for someone they can agree with. Welcome to 'democracy and freedom of expression' at long last, isn't it fun, even when its all so wrong...
