Moscow bans 'satanic' gay parade

Moscow bans 'satanic' gay parade Moscow mayor Yuri Luzhkov has said he will never allow a gay rights parade in the Russian capital. Speaking to reporters, Mr Luzhkov described such events as "satanic". Moscow banned a gay march in 2006, citing the threat of violence. People who ignored the ban were beaten up by counter-demonstrators and arrested. Gay activists say the ban breaches their fundamental human rights. They say they intend to appeal to the European Court of Human Rights. "Last year, Moscow came under unprecedented pressure to sanction the gay parade, which cannot be called anything other than satanic," Mr Luzhkov said. "We did not let the parade take place then, and we are not going to allow it in the future," he said. The mayor also blamed groups which he said were receiving grants from the West for spreading what he dismissively referred to as "this kind of enlightenment" in Russia. He thanked the head of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Alexy II, for supporting him in banning a gay march last year. Defiant Some people who took part in the unauthorised event were beaten up by right-wing counter-demonstrators or detained by police. But the parade's organisers say they plan to hold the event in May and will appeal against the ban in the Strasbourg court. "Trying to silence us, the Russian authorities denied us one of the fundamental human rights. The European justice will have the last say in this case," Nikolai Alexeyev, one of the parade organisers, said in a statement. Gay activists in Russia are divided over whether the march should be held, the BBC's James Rodgers in Moscow says. Some suggest that holding the parade at all will simply provoke a backlash from their opponents, our correspondent says.

Just an interesting fact: Peter the Great was gay.
p.s. why must you always compare Russia to the west? I thought Russians were different, etc etc?

Originally posted by Magnetonium Ummmm ? Where the hell do you get that idea from? In that article, BOTH the government and Church support the same dam thing. Church and state in Russia are comingled. I remember during Soviet era prominent priests and religious leaders were also KGB agents, and since today there are a lot of former communists in power in Russia, I doubt things have changed in Church either. Yuri Luzhkov is a big idiot, I always disliked him. He and his wife have a bunch of shady businesses in Moscow controlling real state. They jack up the prices of property and earn millions of dollars each month. Yuri Luzhkov's wife is one of the richest women from an article few months ago I read in Forbes. Since Soviet Union's collapse, Russia only then began to ponder on democratic issues. It took West how many years to accept homosexuality? Well, dont expect Russia to accept it in their country soon, because it will have to wait. There are many people, ordinary Russians, who are against homosexuality. No need for more flames right now. Russia has other serious matters that need attention.

So judging by his previous actions, its easy to assume by now that Dopey is an idiot. Anyhow, this thread is not about this at all, so I'll let it rest, I am sure an average person can see the truth better for himself/herself ;-) I'll leave Dopey's comments to himself next time, they guy's a complete loon. No bother wasting my time ;-)

Originally posted by Magnetonium I hardly if ever acknowledge sarcasm from a person I dont know because I ran into serious problems on an undisclosed buying website before. Taking sarcasm in the wrong way, usually the joking way had worse implications for me before. So I always take things people say seriously unless it is clearly sarcastic. So I stay on the safe side, OK?
