dual monitor question

so i just recently bought a new monitor. so i have two now....thing is, my dumbass didn't actually look at the back of my computer when i bought the second one.

turns out i only have one VGA output....not two.

i've been looking online and found this product:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...25173&CatId=467

and i was wondring if that would really work? everything else i'm finding are like actual boxes that run for $75 up to like $500. just wondering what the best solution (i.e. cheapest, yet still working) for having two monitors, with only one output.

why do you want dual monitor is the main question?!

If you want to clone the video on both screens in which case the splitter you showed will work.

Do you want to do screen panning/extended desktop? ( I assume this is what you want )

If you want to have an extended desktop you will need to be a graphic card that has a dual output ( you could just buy an extra one output card as well but sometimes there are issues running two cards while trying to get an extended desktop).
You can get a dual output card for anywhere from 40 50 dollars to 500+

Just say what you want to do

You should look and see if your graphics card supports dual monitors first. The Nvidia Quadro I have here at work only has one DVI port on the back of it but the card supports dual monitors so all I needed was a cable that divides the output.

If your card does not support this you can either buy one that does, buy one with both a VGA and DVI output, or buy another graphics card to go with the one you have. Also if your motherboard has onboard graphics you may be able to enable that for your second graphics card.

what video card do you have?

The VGA splitter product will only clone your monitors. I would just suggest going out and getting a relatively inexpensive video card that has two VGA (or DVI depending on your monitors) ports on the back that will support dual monitor setups. Ive been rocking a dual monitor, extended desktop setup for almost a year and I could even begin to imagine being without it. The convenience of dual monitors is limitless.
