[Experimental/Breaks] Allied Nations - Concrete Katie (192 Sample)(updated)
Hey guys, been a while since I posted anything of my own... here's something a little experimental, it's called Concrete Katie.
Updated Link (Feb 1, 3PM EST)
(Longer, another melody happening, some issues cleared up...)
I made this track entirely of samples I recorded walking around the street and banging on bottles in my kitchen using a mini disc reocrder and a fairly decent mic.
During the recording I had no idea what exactly I was going to do with the samples and was originally planning an ambient set around their use. Instead I arranged them on ableton and made a bit of a tune. Vox samples courtesy of my roomate, Katie
Would love to get some opinions on this.
Cheers,
Greg
sounds interesting a bit muffled though...
btw...the intro...speech is nice but add some subtle percussions earlier...
you definitely need to improve the trebles somehow...it feels like there's a big hole in there...
the "bassline" is nice too...would do well with some EQ for the higher part of it and maybe some compression...
structure and rythm-wise it's very nice ... but you need to work on your production...good work though.
keep it up Greg...
and if you get a chance check my new Veneficia Alberica track...something tells me you might like it
the freq range is all muddy because i took all the samples from two field recordings i did... one outside in the street and the other in my house bangin on wine bottles with a fork.
it's supposed to sound raw, but i havent really compensated for the lack of high end yet- still need to do that.
with this one however, i went for grit... i wanted that nastiness, but i agree the mid highs - highs require some serious tweaking..
hows the bass?
in any case this version will be a radio edit.. when i make a "dancier" version i will def extend make the intro a little more "mixable"
thanks for the listen dude
will check yours soon
thanks
The track is raw and dirty. I like what you are trying to achieve. You pull it off, though the track is too minimal for my liking. You could make this even grittier Greg IMO.
The vocals sample is good. Try doing some different things with the vocals. Experiment different filters, pan around a bit and add some reverb or echo now & again.
The mids are missing. Maybe adding some gritty fx / fade in a slight lead synth riff or something, but nothing overwhelming; like some raw angry monosynth crunching around, in & out. It could be Oscillated as well & cover the high frequencies... just an idea.
Percs are Ok. A groovy beat!
Interesting patterns.
The Bass drum could be punchier & bassier IMO. The snare works. I like the tapping sticks.
The bass... the phaser bass is spinny. Me likes!
The mid/high phaser works well with it.
Good job dood!
thanks for the listen
Lol @ phaser bass
I made the bass by recording the sound of a car, looping it, pitching it and added a pit of a chorus (which explains the phasing)
the kickdrum is a sample of me knocking on a table, so it's been a pain to really suck the low end out of it. The snare is a car door closing pitched up
I need to sort some sort of a lead I suppose, at at least another line in there to break up the somewhat stagnant midrange.
again, to all those worried about the production values, you try using nothing but field recordings of banging on bottles and outdoor ambience to make a dance tune

lol the best part is the keys around 1:30...i was listening in my phones and i thought someone was behind me...
the vocal chopping is too repetative to me, otherwise, this is pretty cool for how you went about putting it togethor!
and as others have said, it's a bit thin...
keep it up!

Very original in the concept and implementation. It's not often these days that people actually go out with a mic and record their sounds, or bank on wine bottles with a fork.
I give an A+ just for that alone.
Could use some work in the mix, I know they're recorded samples but you just gotta process 'em right.

Any suggestions on the processing end? I'm probably weakest in that area...
very cool, i like this a lot greg.

From what I remember, it sounded largely like some EQ and a bit of compression would do the trick, although if you're working with recorded samples there might be individual treatment you could do like noise/hiss reduction, removing DC offsets, etc. I'll have to listen to that updated version and see what I can deduce, maybe it's already solved. |
