Talking I think I'm stuck in the 90's

Does anyone else feel the same way?

It's hard to believe that Orbital's "Halcyon", for example, is almost 15 years old now. I still think that Prodigy's "Breathe" is just 5 years old, when it was actually produced in 1996 (in case you don't believe me, ask Wikipedia). Girls born in the same year Super Mario World was released (in Japan) are barely legal, and so on.

All that makes me wonder... did anything significant happen this decade? Is terrorism and global warming all there is?

Meh, this decade sucks!

Depeche Mode, The Cure and The Killers collaborate for the greatest album ever?

Most of what I regually listen too is from the the late 80's through to late 90's, theres some stuff from this decade which is great as well but a lot of it is utter tripe
I think a lot of it has to do with 20-20 hindsight really, able to spend time picking through stuff, other peoples recomendations, whilst not being hindered by the current day worries of growing up, working and all the rest which was going on then.

ironically i'm stuck as late in the 90's as you can get. Right now on winamp: Daft Punk - Essential Selection - 12-31-99

Posted by Aquarian on Feb-04-2007 05:00:

Me too really. Nothing significant captivated my attention since 99 or so - music, TV, movies, video games, fashion trends... I grew up in the 90s and that's always gonna be 'my time'.

Posted by Cobalt on Feb-04-2007 05:09:

I completely agree. In terms of electronic music, the 2000s have nothing comparable to what got started in the 90s. There's still so much I haven't heard from that decade, I'm not sure I'll ever exhaust it.

I still feel closer to the year 2000 than the year 2010. I don't know why.

i think i'm stuck in the 90's because i wear baggy plaid shirts and hiking boots..

Yeah, I really feel like we just got to the new millenium

Posted by Taranis on Feb-04-2007 05:32:

Yeah, I was just thinking about this earlier, to me it still feels like we're just entering the new millenium, even though we're closer to the end of the decade than the beginning.

Oh, I had read "I wear baggy pants and plaid shirts" and I was going to say that's exactly how I dress

Yeah, same here. There's no defining aesthetic to this decade. It just seems like a big artistic slump after the rollin' 90s. Lots of aimless flailing, but nothing visionary. Most of what we have is just residual from years prior to 2001.

Terrorism, global warming, and anxiety; that seem to be all there is to the 2000s so far, at least from the perspective of this American.

All of the stress from your list will soon result in a spurt of creativity in music. Spurt I say.

Spurt.

Spurt spurt spurt spurt.

Say it a bunch of times. Spurt.

Significant events that occurred around 1990 which would influence the course of history and character of the decade, include:

* The Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in August 2, 1990.
* The Moscow Coup and subsequent break-up of the Soviet Union in December 21, 1991.
* The war in Bosnia and Hercegovina in (1992-1995)
* The invention of the World Wide Web in 1989.
* The fall of the Berlin Wall in November 11, 1989.

Computer and video games
- Sony's PlayStation becomes the top selling game console and changes the standard media storage type from cartridges to compact discs in consoles.
- Doom (1993) bursts onto the world scene and instantly popularizes the FPS genre, and even how games are played, as Doom is among the first games to feature multiplayer capabilities. It is not until Quake (1996), however, that game developers begin to take multiplayer features into serious consideration when making games. Half-Life (1998) features the next evolutionary step in the genre with continual progression of the game (no levels in the traditional sense) and an entirely in-person view, and becomes one of the most popular computer games in history.

oh and let's not forget...

On March 18, 1995, Jordan announced his return to the NBA through a two-word press release: "I'm back."
