The 4 degrees of separation between TO & the Boston 'bomb scare'

I just noticed an interesting correlation between something that occurred in our city and the 'alleged' bomb scare in Boston, involving LED ads to promote the Aqua Teen Hunger Force cartoon.

If you are familiar with New Mind Space (the organization here that organizes subway & streetcar parties, zombie walks, pillow fights, bubble blowing, etc...). Well in Dec. they organized a 'radical illumination' event where they made 1000 'throwies' (magnetic LED devices) to throw and stick on passing streetcars and anything metallic they could stick to. INFO HERE

These throwies were developed by a company called Graffiti Research Lab, and they show you how to make them yourself on their website, and show you various uses and art installations used with them. INFO HERE

So some advertising company decides to create a circuit board to house these lights and make an interesting renegade ad campaign, which some MORON misconstrued as a bomb and phoned it in, despite the fact that 40 devices had been in place around Boston and other cities for nearly 3 weeks. INFO HERE

So, who gets arrested for this? Not a VP at Turner Broadcasting, the president of the ad agency or CEO Sam Travis Ewen of the marketing company. It's the 27 year-old artist who was hired to stick the ads up.

Boston is pissed that they have egg on their face for creating this media fury over an LED ad campaign. The right thing to do would admit they were STUPID and made a mistake, and arrest the idiot who phoned it in as a bomb scare to begin with.

See, I would have said they were more inspired by Light Brite than that, but cool, hadn't seen that before!

I love the idea of LEDs in balloons. That'll be awesome for a party.

from article: http://edition.cnn.com/2007/US/02/0...care/index.html

"Two men pleaded not guilty Thursday to charges they created panic by placing electronic light boards that caused a bomb scare Wednesday in Boston."

"At a news conference after the hearing, Stevens and Berdovsky stepped to the microphones and said they were taking questions only about 1970s hairstyles.

When a reporter accused them of not taking the situation seriously, Stevens responded, "We're taking it very seriously." Asked another question about the case, Stevens reiterated they were answering questions only about hair and accused the reporter of not taking him and Berdovsky seriously.

Reporters did not relent and as they continued, Berdovsky disregarded their queries, saying, "That's not a hair question. I'm sorry." "

Just emailed the Massachusetts Attorney General's office & the Mayor of Boston, voicing my disappointment in their handling of the whole situation.

Turner, contractor to pay $2M in Boston bomb scare
February 5, 2007

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AP) -- Turner Broadcasting System Inc. and Interference Inc. have agreed to pay $2 million to resolve any claims resulting from a Cartoon Network marketing campaign that caused a widespread bomb scare, the attorney general said Monday.

The agreement with several state and local agencies resolves any potential civil or criminal claims, Attorney General Martha Coakley said.

More than three dozen blinking electronic signs with a boxy cartoon character giving an obscene hand gesture were found Wednesday in Boston, Cambridge and Somerville. The signs, part of a publicity campaign for Cartoon Network's "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," also appeared in nine other big U.S. cities in recent weeks, with little interest.

But in Boston, bomb squads responded to reports of the devices in a subway station, on bridges and elsewhere.

As part of the settlement, $1 million will be used to reimburse the agencies and $1 million will be used to pay for homeland security and other programs. Turner Broadcasting, a division of Time Warner Inc., and Interference Inc. also will issue a public statement accepting full responsibility and apologizing for the incident.

"Last week's events caused a major disruption in the greater Boston area on many levels -- crippling public transportation, causing serious traffic problems, negatively affecting local businesses and perhaps most significantly, costing Boston and surrounding communities thousands of dollars," Coakley said.

Authorities say two men were paid to hang the signs around the city. Peter Berdovsky, 27, and Sean Stevens, 28, have pleaded not guilty to placing a hoax device and disorderly conduct.

Coakley said prosecutors were in discussions with the men's attorneys to resolve the charges before a trial.

Turner Broadcasting is the parent company of CNN.

Now that Boston's gonna get a $2M payoff, don't be surprized if charges are suddenly dropped or reduced. Money can buy freedom...or at least, more homeland security.
