Posted by bryans05 on Feb-04-2007 17:54:

nice review!

Care to give more details? lol

Nothing wrong with not enjoying the night, but at least elaborate on what made it so bad. Great, it was horrible...but why? Come on now.

isn't that a song Rj likes? lol

But really, if I hadn't been so annihiliated at the Drink I had made it down for this, I'm a fan of the red circle.

I have a feeling you just weren't a fan of minimal...

Elaborate...because I seriously doubt this. The Red Circle is probably the most talented group of deejays Toronto has known. Kenny G dropping a bad set...I think not...but I'd like to hear why you didn't enjoy it at all.

I was at Sonic last night. Would love to write a review....but I REALLY would not know where to start!

My word of the night was "Weird"

Still love the direction the club is heading though and I am looking forward to the next couple of weeks!

Posted by GrooveBuff on Feb-04-2007 23:51:

I don't know what to say about last night other than I did not enjoy the music AT ALL and it totally killed my mood.

That place sure isn't what it used to be.
I want some good tribal/progressive djs to come back to SONIC.

p.s. It's all about the music.

Man, that's when you spark up a joint and take it to the next level. I fuckin' love weird vibes, but then again, I'm pretty goddamn weird myself!

I LOVED Kenny G's argyle sweater. Pure gold. Shanny would have been very, very proud.

Music was spot on for me last night. Fresh and original. All the Red Circle guys appeared to be having a blast in the booth, working together, which for me, at least, made it seem like big private house party. Lots of room to test new moves on the dance floor, many of my favourite people there >>> doesn't get much better than that, IMO.

No not only the music I like but the attendance last night was disgraceful, and I think that says alot. Progressive house djs always bring in the crowds which means more $$$$$$ for the club.

I hope SONIC gets better soon.

Minimal techno. Definitely funky in spots. Glasgow and White in particular delivered some trippy sh*t.

C'mon, it wasn't THAT bad. If it were like that every night, then I think there would be cause for concern. The fact is, the past two weekends (Lexicon Ave., Creamer/Behrouz) were VERY busy and many of the regulars probably needed a break this weekend. I, for one, liked listening to some local talent in the place, and enjoyed the extra space to move around. The only way the local talent is going to build a bigger fan base is if they get the opportunity to showcase their talent on a regular basis. If that means that Sonic has to live with smaller crowds on these nights in the short run, then so be it. I think it is the right decision for the long run.

The next three weekends (Copeland/Chab, Peter Rauhofer, Chris Fortier/Three, Derrick Carter) look very interesting and I suspect they will be much busier...

Posted by SuperJimbo on Feb-05-2007 03:55:

nice ID, and according to TJ it was the last tune of the night...

Posted by The Highroller on Feb-05-2007 16:27:

It's good to hear that the music being played at Sonic is challenging and cutting edge. It's better than the same tired progressive/tribal sounds that is just far to easy to play and listen to. Give it a chance guys. Don't just immediately dismiss it as bad because it's not something you're used to.

Posted by MiniTechBox on Feb-05-2007 18:20:

The problem is that most of Toronto's crowd are still in Progressive and tribal... No wonder Red Circle is the best group of local DJs that bring fresh sound to the city ... We should proud of having local talents such as Jonny White & Kenny Glasgow and even Teeloo for playing such a dark twisted minimal shit ...

^^^ I totally agree.

BTW, if anyone is interested in what they missed, I just found this on Jonny's myspace page....

Jonny White - Sonic - Feb 2007

Note that the set starts a bit slow and requires a bit of patience to get into it, but well worth the wait, IMO. Good stuff.
