Talking Who else likes Power Noise here?

If you don't know what Power Noise is, I bring you Detritus, Synapscape, Radium and, although it's not really Power Noise, Hellfish.

This is so much fun Does anyone know of similar artists and/or could recommend me a few tracks?

Posted by Hydarnes on Feb-05-2007 20:59:

The first one you posted isn't so bad, it actually has a recognizable tune, so it wouldn't really qualify in your "bedlam of noise" category (still pathetic though).

Without having to elaborate further, the other three you posted are just plain despicable --- I'm praying for a response similar to: "It's just a joke guys"...

But if you want more "Music" like that I know exactly where you can get some...

1. Go to your kitchen
2. Gather some pots and pans and a few spoons
3. Turn on the television static
4. Find some other random noises and/or vocals
....and you might get something similar to what you're looking for out of it. (You may even want to throw in some construction work noises or even a train going by for good measure)

Enjoy!

is that like when you turn on a lawnmower or something?

Hey, I forgot about that! lawnmowers would make a phenomenal asset to this genre!

No, mate, you're doing it wrong. You're trying too hard and making yourself look ignorant at the same time.

Next time, do not reply unless you've got something useful or funny to say

Lira,

C'mon, there's no need for that kind of posture! You don't really expect people to take you seriously on this do you?

The only "trying too hard" would be the overwhelming desire to feel so "underground" that one is willing to start listening to absolute clattering nonsense for a [delusional] sense of higher musical attainment.

Posted by Ted Promo on Feb-05-2007 21:35:

Eh, I'm not really a fan. The first one sounded like decent industrial, the other three sounded like like glitchy hardstyle.

Well, there have been threads here in the past where power noise was taken just as seriously as drum'n'bass or house. Many oldskool ta's might remember Noisician (aka Acid Junkie), who was some kind of "noise missionary", telling people more about the genre.

Besides, all I said was that I thought it was fun and I wanted to know more about it, what could be wrong with that?

Hmmm. But do you really listen to that?

Yes, I do. I wish I had gone to DeciBELIO Festival, actually, where all these clips were recorded.

Wow is all I can say and I'll leave it at that. But to each his/her own. For me, I find it pretty tacky (probably because it's just noise),... almost like there was too much laziness to come up with something harmoniously beautiful or memorable.

That's because you're judging it by what it doesn't intend to be: it doesn't want to be "beautiful", "harmonious" or a "Ohrwurm" (i.e. that kind of music that you can't get out of your head). Power Noise is supposed to be excessively energetic: distorted, fast and, literally, a riot to dance.

edit: Hellfish, actually, just plays current Hardcore techno. If you didn't like hardcore back in the days, I suppose it won't sound better now.

First time I heard of Power noise, but I actually quite like it. it's got that "I don't give a fuck" feel to it and makes you just wanna jump around and stuff. Try playing all 4 vids at the same time. Yeahhhhh :P

Posted by lacksesepsotygh on Feb-05-2007 23:23:

nice stuff. i need to get ahold of more similar material

Posted by PETRAN on Feb-05-2007 23:41:

It's nice for what it is, namely not music...

ehhhm anyway i remeber listening once to a group called noisex and i think they were power-noise...perhaps you should check them out?

Detritus was pretty good. I liked that one.
Hellfish was quite good too although I don't like the hardstyle influences. Radium has clearly too much hardstyle for me. And Synapscape were too weird for me.

But there are several more clips from this DeciBELIO festival on Youtube ... even damn good ones ... check out the This Morn Omina video - live drums, tribal madness and razor-sharp noize! Man, they are seriously something decent!

Posted by ASFSE on Feb-06-2007 13:22:

i just watched one of the videos...

i'm sure it is a lot better live, but it got annoying really fast.

just my take on it.

Posted by Derivative on Feb-06-2007 13:51:

Lira, you'd probably love:

Merzbow
Masonna
MSBR
Third Organ
Controlled Bleeding (the early stuff. The later stuff is really dark and ambient)
SPK (the early stuff such as Slogun)
Whitehouse (really hit and miss here but its all bizaare, and often quite funny. If you can track down some of their live performances during the 80s then you are in for a treat. Brutal stuff, usually interupted part way through by police clearing the place out. Smashing!)

and others of its ilk. Its very loud, mostly based on static and white noise. Check out Pulse Demon by Merzbow. If you listen to enough Merzbow you start to realise the man does actually do make a surprisingly varied selection of...music which is mostly based on clipping distortion. The kind of property of recorded sound that most people try to avoid as a principle.

I guess you could call this power electronics or power noise or whatever. But its basically industrial music in the sense that its music that anyone could make. You dont need to muscianship or skill or a particular instrument.

:eng101: which is why the original industrial record label was so called - it was music made for the consumption of the working class, and the 'unskilled'. You could think of it as a total reinvention of music that tries to avoid everything that makes modern musical composition the way it is eg. reliance on harmonic intervals, scales, chords, melody, harmony and strict rhythym which you don't really deviate far from.

If you are feeling a little more adventurous, then feel free to check out the stuff on Cold Meat Industry like Machinenzimmer.412. In particular 'In Nomine Dei' which is not so much noisy as it is ambience. It tries to capture a mood. You may also like Memorandum though by this point the emphasis is less on completely overloading your senses with noise and rather using sound to create sensation. Its not musical at all but the roots are the same. It is often thought of as 'Dark Ambient'

Also check out Coil which is moving off the whole idea of industrial and ambient music altogether and does incorporate musical elements into it. Its all heavily ritualised though and your enjoyment of the...music, depends largely on the weight and significance you personally place on what you hear. It can go either way.

Is Detritus' other stuff like what he was playin in that first vid? coz its pretty nice

As for the others, i don't mind it, but i probably wouldn't listen to it for an hour (though in the right atmosphere...)

Whoa...

Posted by distant on Feb-06-2007 23:35:

How is the first video power noise?

As for the other videos:

I started watching the clips expecting a random white noise attack, instead I get what I've been listening to for quite a while. Stuff like Iszoloscope, Winterklte and other artists from the Ant-Zen crew. And yes, I'm familiar with Hellfish. I guess I've just always thought of it as some form of industrial hardcore. Oh well.

Droning ambient static is just annoying though, I guess you just call that "Noise"?

Whoa...

Equilibrium, which you can find here, is similar. I'm not quite sure about the tunes from other albums, but Detritus is known for being both melodic and noisy.

Well, Detritus usually plays Power Noise, and except for the melody, it's still very rhythmic and distorted, so I thought it could be considered PN as well

Yes, I'd call it noise. As for the other bands you've mentioned, I'm going to look for more about Winterklte and the artists on Ant-Zen (Iszoloscope is one of the very few names I know )

Cheers, mate, that was a good read

Merzbow was the only familiar name in the bunch, and his tunes are indeed interesting. However, I had learned that Power Electronics and Power Noise were different: Power Noise was the more rhythmic stuff and Power Electronics consisted of screeching waves of feedback, analogue synthesizers making sub-bass pulses or high frequency squealing sounds, and screamed, distorted, often hateful and offensive lyrics

That would be Whitehouse, then. I'm not a fan of them, too S&M. Surgeon has been known to drop various Whitehouse tracks in his sets, it works quite well on that level though.

I really enjoyed the 4th one

Not as bad as I thought it would be. I thought this would actually be like recordings of saws and drills or something.
