Final Scratch, Serato, or Torq?

I wanted to start a discussion among those of you who have used any of these products, now that Torq has been around long enough for (what I expect to be) a fair amount of people to have experience with it. I have seen Final Scratch and Serato in use but haven't played with either one first hand... as for Torq I have looked at it online and I must say that the software interface looks pretty shit. Anywho, I'm not one to speculate, so please discuss, and express your opinions on which is better/worse and why.

Cheers.

i recently had the chance to finally try out serato and i actually liked it

interface is good, very responsive and i didn't notice any lag

depending on my financial situation in the coming months, i might be picking up a copy for myself

haven't had a chance to try out the other 2

Recently???, didn't you try out my Serato like 6 months ago?, I'm sure you used it one night you came over with Phil.

Serato! Enough said. Do a search on it, there's tons of threads about this topic.

serato is the best pro choice.. by far.. but traktor scratch is coming out in may and that looks to be possibly a very sollid competitor, especially for electronic music djs. Given the features its going to be offering, it may be your best bet.. but its not out till may. Serato by no means, is anything to hold off on though, it is very good.

do any of these have master tempo built in? would be useful if im using it with my turntables as i dont have master tempo on them.

Hmm interesting, I didn't know about Traktor Scratch.

One thing that I like about Serato over Torq is that it uses a USB interface (powered) as opposed to firewire (unpowered if I use my laptop, and apparently firewire has hotplugging issues that can result in a fried port). Oh and another thing is Serato's GUI looks much nicer than Torq's, imo.

Serato does have Master Tempo. It's called KEY LOCK. But Serato is working on something better than Master Tempo.... PITCH N TIME. PNT is Serato professional "master tempo" plug in used in movie and music studios world wide. They are working on creating this for Serato. This will be sick because it will maintain everything very accurate. Woohoo I can't wait.

I need to upgrade from fs2 It did however serve me well!

will wait to check out upgrade options on fs2 and there is a new one out from native instruments which also has upgrade deals...

torq sounds possible as well, seems very good so far

i personally have Torq..and man does it do the job... especially with the integration of the midi and being able to use ableton with it aswell.. i reallly dont know if serato has it but im sure :S??

anyway..i got torq cuz of the price... im a broke college student :P

it all comes down to trying em out themselves and seeing which is best price wise and function wise ehh

depending on your mp3 collections, Serato works really with low quality 128kbps 44khz mp3s while torq is lacking on that. I recall my friend's torq crashed because of bad mp3 file. Serato FTW!!!! Yes I do own a copy of it as well. Never failed on me during a gig.

Exactly what I was thinking. Looking at mine right now.

I've used Torq for hours at a time and have had no problems so far. I'm also running it on a 4 year old laptop.

Serato just released version 1.7.1.

Well if your just djing in your bedroom then torq might be fine but if you do gigs i would not be touching it

I'm going to go ahead and be the third person to ask: why not?

I play a gig every Wednesday with Torq and I have not had a single problem with it.

Posted by Zild on Feb-10-2007 12:05:

James if you really want to know. Just start learning Ableton.

And the whole USB/Firewire argument is really moot if you're thinking about using vinyl control. You are right though about the unpowered firewire interfaces not being as stable as the USB ones though. Like you said Serato has a power adapter you can get instead of running from the laptop.

serato FTW

Well many reasons.. initially they were having a decent amount of issues including stability issues. Maybe the update helped that.. i dunno.

Also they dont have a track record as a s/w dev company.

If you've really put ur sytem through the work horses and are confident in its stability then be my guest and use it out. Hopefully you wont have any issues.. but i wouldnt recommend it at face value as pro dj sofware at the moment..it just hasnt proven itself.. just my opinion.. plus i read quite a few testimonials of people saying it had potential but didnt live upto expectations, and that they are sticking with ssl.

It's quite good for a Gen 1 product, however, and I've personally found it to be quite stable.

It should establish itself quite nicely as a trusted product.
