thoughts on UNKLE
I'm curious as to why these guys arent mentioned more around here. personally I think they were far better back in the days when DJ shadow was still with them, but they are still unreal even by todays standards. reign is such a great song, and it seems remixes of it just cant go wrong.
is James Lavelle/UNKLE still around? what do you think about them?
unkle - unreal
unkle - lonely soul
unkle - rabbit in your headlights
unkle - glow (hybrid remix)
unkle - reign (way out west vocal)
unkle - reign (evil 9 remix)
unkle - burn my shadow (JXL remix)
love them. especially In A State. the sasha involver remix really doesnt do it justice.
Re: thoughts on UNKLE
I like UNKLE.
The original version of Glow is amazing! there was never any need for drums or fancy tricks with that song.
"Never, Never Land" is a really good album. The other one (which I cant remember the name of) is shit.
However, his compilation with Thom Yorke from Radiohead (Rabbit In Your Headlights) is an awesome song.

edit

Oh yes, their productions and remixes are great for the ones i've heard anyway, no matter what meneedit says.
I've been an UNKLE wh0re for years and don't see an end to it.
The new UNKLE album, The Future Is Unwritten is supposed to come out in the latter half of this year. I'm soo looking forward to it.

I'm a huge fan of UNKLE and James Lavelle, both the albums are great, i like that there is a lot of variation in style between the two and over the years Lavelle and the other guys have been active, from the triphop of the days of Mo'Wax to breaks, progressive and occasional trancy stuff like In A State. They've also made a lot of great work with different vocalists, there are beautiful laidback songs like What Are You To Me for example. Another great thing is that UNKLE releases many times come with a huge amount of brilliant remixes. Lavelle has also done a lot of great UNKLE remixes for all kinds of artist, they also vary much in style.
Right now i guess they're working on their upcoming album The Future Is Unwritten. You can hear a sample of Burn My Shadow at unkle.com. The remixes of Burn My Shadow were released some time ago and also featured on the unkle boxset that came out on GU. Junkie XL remix is just huge and the original sounds really nice too, i'm seriously looking forward to the album. Listen to Burn My Shadow and take a look at the website with that flyer "The third chapter of the unkle experience, a collection of desert songs, coming to an audio system near you soon". I like that retro-noir-desert-johnny cash thing the got going on, really really exciting.
good producer, crap dj...
Psyence Fiction and their essential mix still own me, and the edits for film are awesome as well-

I agree that psyence fiction was better than never never land (thanks DJ shadow
) but never never land definitely had its moments. reign, invasion (which features vocals from robert del naja of massive attack), in a state, eye for an eye and glow were all good songs.
wasn't aware they had a third album coming out, very exciting

UNKLE - Celestial Annihilation
FTW!
UNKLE is awesome. I heard the new album when I met James in November. It's fantastic. It features Ian Astbury from The Cult, as well as Queens Of The Stone Age and is a hybrid breaks/rock album. Very slick and very well produced.
Psyence Fiction is one of my favourite albums ever. I must have listened to it well over 200 times, but every time I still seem to discover something new.
